Essendon's Depth

Funny and a bit sad watching Essendon supporters desperately trying to avoid the obvious answer regarding Essendon's depth. (admire their efforts though). Grab yourself a tape of Sunday's game and watch it real slow. Nothing like a little dose of reality. :)

Essendon has finished 6th the past 2 seasons whilst your Blues have finished 16th and 11th.
How much did Carlton beat Sydney by in Rd 1 of the Wizard Cup last year?
102 points wasn't it. And who made the finals in the main game ? Sydney, wasn't it.

Nothing like a dose of reality !!!!!!!

Essendon fans seem to be going through what Collingwood supporters went through at the start of last year after their Wizard cup thrashing by the Weagles. Difficulty coming to grips with a few obvious realities, with plenty of examples in this thread. Suspect history will repeat itself. :)

I was talking about Beau Waters. But nice to see you're rotating the entire 2004 Half Back line through the goal square.

Waters was actually playing in a forward pocket

As for Essendons depth, they are looking a tad shaky due to there success over the years. In recent times Carlton, Adelaide, West Coast, Norths and Geelong have all had to rebuild after long periods of success in the 90's

It may be the same for Essendon if they lose a few of the key players to injuries or poor form

On the subject of Bradley. That is one huge unit. The ammount of weight he put on over the summer is quite unbelievable and should get Essendon fans very excited. If you ask me, he'll play every game this season and possible as a CHB. This is in contrast to what I saw from Walker, who is still too skinny and will probably just be a bit-player for another season.

I was also surprised when Essendon picked Bradley over Tenace, but in hindsight it may have been a Sheedy Masterstroke.

You can judge so much from one game. Who would have thought the lions would fall away so badly after a hiding they copped from the blues in 2001.

It's hatd to win without any of your best players, Hird, Lloyd and the 2 Johnsons. BUt to Carltons credit, they played heaps good

Essendon haven't even kicked a ball in anger for Season 2005 and already there are questions being asked about our 'depth'. Judge us when we've played every team once.

I apologise in advance if your club is one of the clubs beaten by Essendon this season, a club that clearly relies on 2 players to win games.

Probably a fair point that Funky! If he stands up at CHB, it means that Lucas can go back to CHF, where we know he can be damaging and prolific. Whilst Sunday wasn't a great indication, with Whitnall seemingly on fire, the signs from Kepler are very promising.

Don't think you'll be making too many apologies this year. :)

We can finally close this thread and start the:-

'St.Kilda's Depth' thread.
the response to this thread suggests that I'm not alone in doubting the bummers capacity to survive without their aging guns. It would be a pity to close it now!

Well all I think is that you are years away from winning another flag, perhaps further away than Carlton or the Kangas.
Sure the Bombers haven't had early picks but still, the players you have picked up don't appear to be impressive (well relatively speaking) compared to other clubs youth.[/QUOTE

And this is based on seeing how many of our games?? or how many Bendigo games. We wont be a threat to the top 5 or 6 teams this year but it wont be because of the lack of tallent on our list. Laycock, Stanton ,Bradley and Dyson combined would compare favourably with a combo of four players at most clubs who have played under 20 games.
Our problem this year will come from the players who have been around for 3 to 4 seasons now ,Bullen , Winderlich , Richards , Reynolds, Hunt and these type of players who have just shown patchs of form here and there have to stand up and do something. Personally i dont share other Bomber supporters faith in a few of these guys and i think we will suffer this year but i don not think we are in as much trouble with depth as some say we are. Three of our four draft picks from last season played senior footy which is pretty good going. :D

Well it seems these days, you have to fall down a bit before you can come back up.
If Essendon keep filling their lists with top-ups like Murphy and Zantuck and stop making room for decent young talent, then they are going to end up like Carlton in 2002.

Have we got more top up guys than any other club???
Allen was clearly a stop gap player as Laycock and cartledge where not ready at the start of last year. Murphy was looked at as being a 3 or 4 year player and Zantuck is only in his early twenties.
I wouldnt say we have used any more older players as top ups than any other club in the leauge.

Says the man whos team in 2004 included such 'top-up' players as Bannister, Clarke, French. Harford, Lappin, Morrell, Teague, Scotland, Wiggins, Bowyer, Stevens, and McGrath.

And celtic_pride has the gall to question "essendon filling their list with top-ups like Murphy and Zantuck and not making room for decent young talent"? Where is Carlton's decent young talent going to find room?

Silly arguement!

And like a few others have already said why is it that people seem to think Lloyd and Hird are retiring together?? Lloydy will be around for another 3 or 4 years once Hird retires.

I love people judging teams on Pre-Season form.

Nothing like a February Ladder.

10 goal losses at any time is a worry. Feel free to keep ignoring the signs tho :D
