I've been trawling here criticizing other Phantom's, and I can't really justify criticism unless I do one for myself. I won't go into details about the player, but I will write why I expect the club to take them. So here goes:

Round 1

1. St. Kilda: Christian Petracca (VM Midfielder/Forward). Best player in the draft, adds to Steven, Billings, Dunstan, Armitage in St. Kilda's midfield.

2. Melbourne: Angus Brayshaw (VM Midfielder). It's no secret that Melbourne needs more class in the middle, so Brayshaw going here is an obvious one.

3. Melbourne: Peter Wright (VM Forward/Ruck). Quite a few people have McCartin going here but I see Wright a better fit as McCartin is similar to Hogan, and Wright adds something different to their forward line.

4. GWS: Jake Lever (VM Key Defender). GWS's biggest area of concern is clearly key defence, and it stands to reason that they take the best key defender of the draft here, instead of taking a gamble that Collingwood won't take him at 5.

5. Collingwood: Patrick McCartin (VC Key Forward). I've probably surprised a few by listing McCartin here but you can see the reasons above. Collingwod are set for 12 years with McCartin and Moore in the one draft.

6. GWS: Jayden Laverde (VM Winger). Another surprise I'll bet, a few had him going to Collingwood at 5, but well, I'm not really conventional. Laverde is super quick, he and WHE on opposite wings could be deadly.

7. GWS: Kyle Langford (VM Utility). A bolter perhaps but they've filled their need and a guy who can play most positions would probably appeal here. Underrated.

8. Gold Coast: Lachlan Weller (Qld midfielder). No dire needs so I have GC taking the best available here, and the fact that he's a Queenslander is a bonus.

9. Collingwood: Darcy Moore (F/S, VM Key Swingman). Absolute steal here, he is a gun and will be special for Collingwood. Son of Peter Moore.

10. Geelong: Liam Duggan (VM Utility). I can't believe that I have Duggan going here either, just circumstances really. Duggan adds class to Geelong and they'd pounce here.

11. West Coast: Jarrod Pickett (WA Midfielder). West Coast need a stronger midfield, and Pickett brings good speed and run to it.

12. Richmond: Paul Ahern (VM Midfielder/Forward). Best available midfielder here, Richmond would love to add Ahern to their midfield rotations.

13. Fremantle: Hugh Goddard (VC Key Swingman). Need an eventual replacement to McPharlin and Goddard fits the bill the best for Freo.

14. Adelaide: Sam Durdin (SA Key Swingman). Better as a key defender, really adds to Daniel Talia as a defender, could be an excellent key defence duo in the future.

15. Gold Coast: Caleb Marchbank (VC Key Defender). A key defender that completes their defensive trio in the future with Thompson and May.

16. North Melbourne: Jordan De Goey (VM Midfielder/Forward). Flipped a coin here, whether to go De Goey or Cockatoo, and ended up on heads, so De Goey. A class midfielder who can swing forward and be useful for North.

17. Essendon: Nakia Cockatoo (NT Midfielder/Forward). The other side of the coin toss, I was thinking that North would choose one and Essendon would pounce on the other. Class act, will add to Essendons group. Nephew of former player Che Cockatoo-Collins.

18. Sydney: Isaac Heeney (Academy, NSW Midfielder). Classy act taken through the academy system. Absolute steal, similar to the Tom Mitchell bargain.

19. Carlton: Oscar McDonald (VC Key Defender). Went with McDonald due to Carlton's previous strategy of Mids first then KPP's second failing, and with Jamison and Rowe not exactly spring chickens they need a key defender for the future.

20. Essendon: Tom Lamb (VC Tall Utility). Lamb suits Essendon's forward line perfectly, with speed and versatility that adds to Daniher and Carlisle.

21. St. Kilda: Reece McKenzie (VM Key Forward). I think McKenzie's a bit overrated but St. Kilda's KPP stocks are a bit thin so he's an obvious answer to certain problems.

Round 2

22. St. Kilda: Tyler Keitel (WA Key Swingman). Maybe a bit early but Keitel definitely fills a need as a key forward or back, I'm sure St. Kilda would have preferred McDonald but you can't get every wish.

23. GWS: Corey Ellis (VM Utility). Best available and Ellis is a good player, GWS would be happy with him at this pick.

24. GWS: Jack Steele (Academy, NSW Midfielder/Forward). Very smart, quick and skillful player, the Giants have a good player at 24.

25. North Melbourne: Jarrod Garlett (WA Midfielder). This pick justifies not taking Cockatoo earlier a little bit, Garlett isn't quite as good but fills a similar role as Cockatoo.

26. Western Bulldogs: Jackson Nelson (VC Midfielder/Defender). Class outside act that adds to the grunt of guys like Liberatore, Wallis and co.

27. Western Bulldogs: Ed Vickers-Willis (VM Defender/Midfielder). Tall, versatile and simply too good to pass on here.

28. Carlton: Connor Menadue (VM Midfielder). Best available player, adds run and class to the Carlton midfield.

29. Gold Coast: Connor Blakely (WA Midfielder). Might be going a bit late but Blakely adds to the GC midfield well.

30. Collingwood: Damian Cavka (VM Midfielder/Forward). Outside midfielder who adds to the recent acquisition of Greenwood as part of the Beams deal.

31. Hawthorn: Peter Bampton (SA Midfielder). Replaces the loss of Hallahan as inside grunt to their midfield.

32. West Coast: Daniel McKenzie (VM Midfielder/Defender). Another midfielder who adds to the stocks of West Coast, smart player.

33. Richmond: Touk Miller (VM Midfielder). Strong inside midfielder who helps out players like Cotchin and Miles.

34. Fremantle: Alex Neal-Bullen (SA Midfielder). Strong inside midfielder that's clearly best available here.

35. Adelaide: Daniel Howe (VC 3rd Tall Defender). A 3rd tall and probably best available for the Crows here. Overager.

36. North Melbourne: Nathan Drummond (VC Midfielder). Good breakaway inside mid that adds to North Melbourne's midfielder. Maybe a little small.

37. Sydney: Dean Gore (SA Midfielder). Best available which adds to the building future midfield of Sydney.

38. Sydney: Jack Hiscox (Academy, NSW Midfielder). Mid with excellent endurance, another well developed midfielder from Sydney's academy system.

39. Western Bulldogs: Clem Smith (WA Midfielder). Fast but poorly skilled midfielder, but best available for the Dogs here.

40. Melbourne: Keenan Ramsey (SA Defender). Smart defender with good skills, Melbourne add class to their future defence.

4. GWS: Jake Lever (VM Key Defender)
5. Collingwood: Patrick McCartin (VC Key Forward).
6. GWS: Jayden Laverde (VM Winger)

You probably need to place greater significance on the fact that GWS have picks 4 and 6.

Taking McCartin out of the discussion, I believe Collingwood would pick Laverde over Lever.

If GWS also believe this to be the case, then surely they would select McCartin with pick 4, knowing they could pick up Lever with pick 6.

It might change, but it was reported that Hine failed to interview McCartin.

I wasn't sure, look at what GWS did with Longer a few years back with Brisbane and it ended up biting them in the rear, I doubt they'll want to make the same mistake again.

That's interesting, didn't know that. I'm willing to wager that it was because he didn't think he'd last to 5 in any case.

We're not going for a KPP, but continue your mantra that ignores your own failures.

About time you drafted some quality mids and flankers who aren't named Heppell.
Like Zaharakis, Zach Merrett and Michael Hibberd?

Let the Blues continue to pick and rubbish first round picks on midfielders despite the glaring need for KPP's at any end.
In a good KPP draft as well.

But most see them getting Keitel at 28, so I don't see a problem with them drafting a small at 19
Why get a lesser KPP at 28 when you can get a very good one at 19? Even though I do have Keitel going 3 picks later.

From my limited uneducated, armchair expertise, Keitel is turning into a Fyfe type, not a T.Walker type..

We all know the very best KPP's come from the top end of the draft. You need to be very, very, very lucky to grab a decent one let alone a very good to exceptional KPP.

If we got McCartin & Moore or Wright & Moore in one draft it would be like Hawthorn in 2004 with Roughead & Franklin.
I personally feel we will go for LaVerde at 5 or even Langford.
With Moore at 9, Hine is playing with his cards stacked.

Yeah, I can see that. I still feel that if Lever is available you'd take him, so GWS take him before and McCartin goes a pick later.

What do you think the addition of Lamb would have on Ambrose? Forward line might be a bit too tall heavy unless Lamb rotated through the midfield regularly.

I doubt we'll draft a KPP, just traded 2 in.

You do know that Liam Jones and Kristian Jacksch are forwards?

Jamieson isn't exactly a spring chicken anymore and Watson has shown more forward than as a defender (hence why he has hardly played it would seem)

Carlton will take a KPP and a small with their first two, the real question is what do they value more and what's available

I think you can fit both and 2 of Giles, Carlisle and Daniher, as both have the capabilities of putting pressure on when the ball hits the deck.
Jacksch has played at both ends, and will be played in defense at Carlton
Jaksch is a crap defender, play him forward.

Lamb, Ambrose, Daniher, Carlisle and Bellchambers/Giles?! Lamb's versatility is a positive, with him looking good off a back flank and adequate through the midfield.
