As I always do, I'll attempt to do a four round "true" phantom draft in terms of bids and what that team will need to use to make up for those. I won't try to predict trades but I'll try to update everything if they do. I'll do a small write up on each player in the first round and after that I'll just do their team, size, etc. This is mostly borrowed off the experts such as eDPS, Chris25 and the others.

Round 1

Pick 1. Adelaide: Riley Thilthorpe (Key Forward/Ruck, 201 cm/100 kg, West Adelaide). Thilthorpe or McDonald? I think they go the local boy here, his hands and set shot look really good, and as far as his Osteotis Pubis is concerned, apart from Essendon it hasn't really been a huge factor over the past 10 years, so I think they'll back themselves to get it right.

Pick 2. Western Bulldogs: Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (KF, 195/90, Oakleigh Chargers). North Melbourne bid with pick 2 (2517 x 0.8 = 2013.6). Western Bulldogs match with picks 26, 33, 41 and 42, with a surplus of 85.4 points. Ugle-Hagan is widely rated as the best prospect in this draft and barring a bid at pick 1, the Dogs will have plenty of points to match wherever the bid comes in.

Pick 3. North Melbourne: Elijah Hollands (Midfield/Forward, 188/85, Murray Bushrangers). McDonald and Hollands is another tough choice, but Hollands fills a bigger need for North who have quality youth inside 50 already, and with his Bontempelli comparisons it's hard to pass him up.

Pick 4. Sydney: Logan McDonald (KF, 196/86, Perth). I really can't believe I'm putting Logan McDonald here, a bona fide chance of going pick 1, but I think if it happens it'll take Sydney approximately 0.001 seconds to read his name out.

Pick 5. Hawthorn: Denver Grainger-Barrass (Key Defender, 194/78, Swan Districts). Widely considered the best key defender of this draft pool, Grainger-Barrass is highly likely to go to the Hawks with their desperate need to add some young key position players. His reading of the play and ability to intercept are standouts.

Pick 6. Sydney: Braeden Campbell (Balanced Midfielder, 181/75, Swans Academy). Gold Coast bid with pick 6 (1761 x 0.8 = 1400.8). Sydney match with picks 31, 33 and 40, with a surplus of 197.2 points. Campbell is one of the better midfielders of the draft, with good speed and skills and a good inside/outside game, Sydney will have the points to match wherever he gets bid on.

Pick 7. Gold Coast: Will Phillips (Inside Midfielder, 180/80, Oakleigh Chargers). Phillips is very similar to Campbell and fits in well with what Gold Coast needs. In addition to that he's friends with the top two draftees of last year in Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson so it will help the Suns retain all three.

Pick 8. Essendon: Zach Reid (Key Utility, 202/83, Gippsland Power). Reid is a risky choice here, but the key position player, who mostly played defence with stints up forward, is a possible Hooker replacement down the line or fill that key forward slot as well. However this selection might be traded along with the next for North Melbourne's pick 2, so watch this space come draft night.

Pick 9. Essendon: Nathan O'Driscoll (IM, 187/78, Perth). O'Driscoll is one of the best midfielders in this draft, and played the second half of the season in the seniors for Perth to mixed success. He fits a big need for the Bombers being a tall-ish inside mid and testing extremely well athletically.

Pick 10. Essendon: Archie Perkins (F/M, 188/79, Sandringham Dragons). I ummed and ahhed a bit about Essendon's third pick (if we trade up to 2/3 I want to take O'Driscoll), but in the end I decided to take the forward/midfielder over the outside mid in Tanner Bruhn. Perkins is Hollands-lite from what I've heard, and he could prove a good POD for the Bombers.

Pick 11. Port Adelaide: Lachlan Jones (Half Back, 186/89, Woodville-West Torrens). Adelaide bid with pick 11 (1329 x 0.8 = 1063.2). Port Adelaide match with picks 33, 42 and 52 with 140.8 points left over in surplus. Jones is a great prospect with excellent kicking skills, and an absolute bargain at this pick. The best running half back in the draft pool, Port have plenty of points to match a bid for him.

Pick 12. Adelaide: Tom Powell (IM, 183/74, Sturt). I was sorely tempted to go with Tanner Bruhn here but Powell is essentially a Brad Crouch clone and a local boy to boot. Powell helps Adelaide with his ability to find the ball on the inside and outside.

Pick 13. Greater Western Sydney: Heath Chapman (Medium Defender, 192/81, West Perth). There were a few options I was weighing up here but went with the intercept marking Chapman. Losing a few defenders and others getting on, this is a real need for the Giants and I elected to go with Chapman here.

Pick 14. North Melbourne: Tanner Bruhn (OM, 183/74, Geelong Falcons). Bruhn is arguably the best kick of this draft and at this point I think the Roos will just go best available, which Bruhn absolutely is.

Pick 15. Fremantle: Nikolas Cox (KU, 200/87, Northern Knights). Cox is one of the most athletically gifted players of this draft, boasting a 6.05 minute 2 km time trial and the ability to play forward, back or on a wing even. I think Freo will try to settle him forward here.

Pick 16. Greater Western Sydney: Oliver Henry (Medium Utility, 188/77, Geelong Falcons). Brother of Jack, Henry looks like one of the stronger prospects this year as an athletic player who can play forward or back, someone who would be extremely dangerous against a 4th defender.

Pick 17. Collingwood: Kaine Baldwin (KF, 193/90, Glenelg). The Pies need a young key forward desperately so this is a great opportunity for them to grab one in the strong contested marking Baldwin. Whilst his athletic profile isn't notable he is an old fashioned full forward with good hands and a good set shot.

Pick 18. Greater Western Sydney: Caleb Poulter (M/F, 192/79, Woodville-West Torrens). Poulter is a risk but with four picks in what will end up being the top 25 they cam afford to take a couple right now. Poulter is athletically gifted as well as some great skills.

Pick 19. Collingwood: Eddie Ford (F/M, 189/83, Western Jets). Ford is one of the more interesting ones come draft night. Wouldn't be surprised to see him crack the top 15 but equally wouldn't be surprised to see him slip to 30. Collingwood can afford to go after the mercurial forward here, very similar to Stephenson.

Pick 20. Collingwood: Reef McInness (IM, 193/86, Oakleigh Chargers). Richmond bid with pick 20 (912 - 197 = 715). Collingwood match with picks 58, 63 and 68 and go into a 374 point deficit for 2021. McInness is one of my favourites for this draft, and a bid should come much earlier for him but that's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.

Pick 21. Richmond: Bailey Laurie (F/M, 179/78, Oakleigh Chargers). Laurie perfectly fits the Richmond model and I can see them taking him here as a small forward to put on heaps of pressure and kick goals.

Pick 22. Sydney: Errol Gulden (Small Utility, 175/75, Swans Academy). Melbourne bid with pick 22 (845 - 197 = 648). Sydney match with pick 51, 73 and their 197.2 point surplus, going into a 182.8 point deficit in 2021. Sydney were probably hoping a bid for Gulden came in the late 20's rather than the early but they'll cop the small deficit in order to keep their academy player.

Pick 23. Melbourne: Jack Carroll (M/F, 187/86, East Fremantle). Carroll is a guy that could be anything, he could be a 20 disposal, 1 goal a game midfielder or a 1.5-2 goal a game forward that chops out in the middle, so an attractive proposition for the Dees.

Pick 24. Melbourne: Brayden Cook (OM, 189/82, South Adelaide). Cook as an outside midfielder who can rotate forward is someone that could step in and play round 1 without too much difficulty. His run and carry and skills are very impressive and will be important for the Demons.

Pick 25. Fremantle: Brandon Walker (HB, 184/75, East Fremantle). Greater Western Sydney bid with pick 25 (756 - 197 = 559). Fremantle match with picks 36 and 50, with 216 points going into surplus. Walker is one of the more talented half backs in the draft pool with his skills, expect Freo to match any bid for him in this range fairly comfortably.

Pick 26. Greater Western Sydney: Zane Trew (IM, 187/78, Swan Districts). Can't believe he slipped this low, honestly. Trew is an excellent inside midfielder, which the Giants have plenty of, but he can really play and will be a useful asset here.

Pick 27. St. Kilda: Sam Berry (IM, 181/81, Gippsland Power). Berry is simply put, the best player available here which is why I think the Saints will take him. Nuggety inside mid that can win the ball.

Pick 47. Brisbane: Carter Michael (BM, 188/74, Brisbane Academy). Carlton bid with pick 47 (316 - 197 = 119), Brisbane match with pick 54, increasing their surplus by 101 to 281.

Pick 48. Carlton: Jack Ginnivan (OM, 183/77, Bendigo Pioneers).

Great stuff, thanks for the write ups

Great stuff, thanks for the write ups
It's nowhere near finished haha. It's not as good as the draft watchers though.

Just something to keep in mind, is list spots that each club will have come draft day. I suspect there will be some clubs that only take one pick to the draft, others on 2.
The AFL minimum is 1 this year.
With that in mind, I cant see GC taking more than 1 pick to the draft, similar to other clubs?

Would be great to get your thoughts, and the other guys that do mock drafts?

You can have as many picks in the draft as you want.

Pick 43. Adelaide: Bailey Chamberlain (OM, 179/70, West Adelaide).
I cried.

Max Heath was right there.
I feel the last thing that the Lions need is a small inside midfielder we already have our inside midfielders covered with Jarrad Berry Ely Smith Devon Robertson Ryhs Mathieson i would hope we were looking at some outside speed
While I agree outside speed is a need, I’m not against picking Zavier Maher with who was left on the board.

He was one of those players who a few draft watchers penciled in as potentially going mid first round had he lived up to his potential this year.

He is fast, has a good athletic profile and good skills. As a bottom ager, the big question was on his production and if he could find the ball enough.

Has the skill set to play on a wing in our system.

Saying all that, I would have preferred Max Heath, and see a greater need, long term, to get a young ruck on to our list.

I believe we can fill our need for an outside mid or wing with one of our picks in next years draft.

I thought you had plenty of good rucks so I didn't really think that you'd take him honestly

We have Oscar McInerney and Archie Smith and that’s it. Archie Smith is almost 100% certain to be delisted at the end of next season.

We have two kids who can chop out in the ruck if we’re desperate, but my guess is one doesn’t make it long term, and the other eventually replaces Dan McStay in the forward line, and provides a chop out for our resting ruck.

And as I keep mentioning, Max Heath is a genuine Lions supporter.

DGB, Macrae, Downie and if we land that bid on Luke Edwards, I will take it, I heard a rumour GWS are keen on Ginnivan, but if he does slide we are desperate for good forwards, good draft haul for us in theory

Sam Collins isn't exactly what we're looking for, I would prefer Ginnivan, but I can't complain with that haul

I like your effort, Thanks. I liked Sam Berry early on, but now feel, that with the acquisitions of Crouch & Higgins, we possibly don't need his type. I believe we still need an outside mid. & for me, that could be F.McCrae. We also need a Ruckman, so from your list, Max Heath may be the one. Jake Bowey, I don't think will get past 'The Hawks' at pick 30, So we may take him beforehand. I will go with Rhyce Angwin with our 2nd pick.

You can have as many picks in the draft as you want.
Yep, no doubt.
But the actual number of picks a club will make in the draft this year, is no longer a minimum of 3, but a minimum of 1.
And from what you read, there could be quite a few clubs that only make 1 pick in the draft.
I that would need to be taken into consideration when doing a mock draft.

I think the perfect example is GC, who may only take 1 pick to the draft. Which would be there first, as they get to pre-list Davies and Jefferey.
Brisbane, Geelong could take 1 pick to the draft?
similarly saints and richmond may only take 2
And some clubs may take a 3 live picks, but will upgrade a rookie, which would count as one of the 3.

Always appreciate the work done in mock drafts, but in 2020 this is a slight difference to previous years, with list sizes coming down.

Appreciate the effort, however I can't see Richmond going down the path of adding a small early on when we need to replenish our KPP stocks with Riewoldt and Astbury getting towards the end of their careers, and Rioli Jr gives us the chance to add another small later on.

We have Oscar McInerney and Archie Smith and that’s it. Archie Smith is almost 100% certain to be delisted at the end of next season.

I thought Tom Fullarton looked better as a ruck than a forward honestly so my not picking Heath was partly for that reason.

You guys like your Tassie boys and I think one of your biggest weaknesses is your back line group which looks old and mediocre, Collins is someone who can help that.

I believe we still need a pure outside mid. & for me, that could be F.McCrae. We also need a Ruckman, so from your list, Max Heath may be the one. And as our next picks are outside your range. I will go for Fraser Rosman with our 2nd pick. Then maybe Matt Allison or Brayden Crossley
I'm surprised you delisted Bell as I thought he had a bit to work with from what I saw of him, Alabakis looked raw but solid from the games I saw of him for Frankston last year. I don't think the ruck is as big a need either with Marshall still having plenty of years ahead of him too.

I mean Soldo, Chol, CCJ, Miller, Nyuon and Garthwaite are hardly old and have showed pretty good signs (apart from Nyuon, but that's a bit harsh). I just see you guys choosing purely best available

Miller and Garthwaite are yet to be re-signed for next season. Soldo isn't exactly a KPF option, which just leaves the inconsistent Chol, raw CCJ(personally rate him the best option) & untried Nyoun. Some talk that of the 2 unsigned that only Miller will be kept given the way they pushed him late in the season. Which has many of us thinking that a KPP will be the target early on.
