Listening to the new midfield coach Paul Hamilton the other day, he declared all spots open so that anyone who could show they're capable would be considered for the midfield rotation.

You can't buy class but you can buy fitness and endurance, and I thought our midfield ran out of puff last year after the injuries mounted and despite our much publicised fitness levels. The prelim against WC was the classic example when their midfielders broke our tackles at will and ran riot in the 2nd half.

Will be interesting to see who measures up and who doesn't. The more midfielders you have the better I think because it means the classier ones can go all out during their rotation, or can be rested in a set position rather than on the bench and out of the action.

Little snippet in the Sunday Herald Sun today about Jason Porplyzia keen to improve his tank and make a move into the midfield. Did that appear over there?

I read that litttle snipett and i think it is great for Jason to put his name up for a midfield role next year, hopefully he can get it. Along with Johncock hopefully

Apart from an odd little cameo now and then, I can't see Stiffy ever making it as a mid-fielder for two reasons.

IMO the most important one is that our defence needs his run and dash from the backlines plus he is hardly ever beaten for the ball. Great player. :thumbsu:

The second one is a matter of logistics because he just doesn't appear to have the motor to run all day on the ball.

I think we have a heap of guys who will be putting their hand up for the mid-field this year, and I'd rather maximize Stiffy's value by leaving him where he is.

Also if he could work on his speed a bit mroe he will be a better palyer IMO. We all know he lacks the speed.. if he can get it to an average pace then he will be a very very good player. AT the moment he is still pretty slow.

Agree. We need to maximise his effect as the qtr back. There are plenty of budding mids without stealing from the backline

Disagree, stiffy was and still is a superior hbf/bp to s burgoyne and if we can get him into the midfield he will be a star like shaun is becoming. Saying that i don't think he will ever get the endurance needed to do it.

....ummmmm....so then he's not a midfielder then......;)

hey i'm just going by what they tell us. Certainly has more value for is in the middle if we can get him there.

thompson + johncock + van berlo +cooney +waters = gun midfield

Yep bassett would be exposed for the fraud that he is. The solution is to stick douglas down there in a BP that is where he played his tac/juniors = another star in the making!

He's not especially quick but he's probably at least average. Without seeing his training times it's hard to say but he has that loping style of running that makes you look slower than you really are.

hmm - I really must have missed something over last couple of weeks......

anyway, it would be good and to be realistic Jasons only option, if he doesn't make the midfield rotations then it would be difficult to see where he fits apart from a bode type FP
