That's the point. Why would you?

Booing a decision is one thing, but why would you go out of your decision to verbally abuse someone just doing their job? Would make you a bit of a flog IMO.

Exactly. Because the rules are too technical and are open to varying interpretations that causes inconsistencies. I don’t know what the answers are but it only makes the umpires job even more difficult and drives us spectators nuts. And the AFL make things even worse when they come out and confirm certain decisions are correct, which then baffles everyone.

When the umpires did their own press announcement post the ANZAC game saying the umpiring decisions were ok - it was not done by the afl - this was very important. No employee through his union does their own press unless the afl has lost control or is in fear. Now the umps are dictating spectator management. Gil will be gone soon and a tougher CEO bought in but there might be some more serious confrontations before them. The new afl chair does not come from professional afl background. It shows. This is a tough business and they are losing control...

When will administrators realise that football is an emotional game? I'm not one to scream and yell, as a matter of fact I am quiet except for applauding when something good happens, but I have mates who are the most mild mannered people you'll ever meet, but the moment they check into a footy game, they're off their heads.

Would they prefer it if nobody came to the football?

AFL aim is that it a tv product, have fake stands and noise everyone watches on tv so no one gets offended and maximum advertising....

I’m glad he got thrown out. The umpires are trying to do their job to the best of their ability with the direction they are given. It is hard enough as it is. It’s no wonder why many don’t want to umpire. What a malicious disrespectful comment. Can people really not watch footy without insults!?? He should lose his membership too if Blues were serious about what represents the club. Well done to Nicholls for not taking any of the fans crap! I hope more follow suit!

Okay, then I never want to hear you ever complain about any free kick paid against your Bulldogs.

People say "don't boo umpires, they have a hard job yada yada" UNTIL their team gets a bad free kick paid against it, then they drop the pretence and berate the umpire worse than those they have been critical of.

Don't be a hypocrite, and say that umpires should be above criticism. If no-one points out when an umpire makes a mistake, how are they supposed to get better?

"They are just doing their job"- The Nazi soldiers at Autswitcz were just doing their job as well. That doesn't excuse things.

"It's a wonder many don't want to umpire"- It's because they don't get paid enough. Make them full-time and pay them more, and watch people apply to be umpires.

Besides, why are the current mob applying to be umpires? They have other jobs, and are doing this on the side? They wouldn't do it unless they loved it, so maybe it doesn't bother them as much as it bothers you.

I have heard Matthew Nicholls disrespectfully call players by their surname, instead of their first name (like other umpires do), and react angrily and berate players on the field, so he is not the fountain of respect himself.

Every profession cops abuse. Police are spat at, assaulted, abused and even have their reputations questioned on a weekly, sometimes daily basis, yet people still apply to be police.

Teachers get answered back, disrespected and even chewed out by students, parents and administration, and their profession isn't given the respect it once was. But people still become teachers.

I think the things that police and teachers cop is worse than what some part-time umpire cops.

As a Bulldogs supporter, you should stop concerning yourself with what is said about umpires, and focus on your disaster of a club. Three missed finals series after a flag. You should worry more about the Bulldogs being referred to as "Bradburying a flag".

Maybe instead of Nicholls being a "bald-headed flog" we should say that Luke Beveridge is a "mullet-headed flog" (Hey, Beveridge, the mullet went out in the 80's, much like his gameplan).
