Interview with McCarthy SEN:

http://www.sen.com.au/audioplayer/Audio/John-McCarthy/3647

He talks about how he really wants to play in the midfield and that he thought realistically he had no chance getting an opportunity ahead Swan, Pendles, Thomas, etc. He talks about how there was no bad blood at all with Collingwood. About he's excited that Port have given him an opportunity to play AFL footy in the seniors.

It's a good interview.

He seems like a really nice bloke.

I wish him well :thumbsu:

Does come across as a really good bloke.

He left our club in the right way and I really hope he does well at Port.

He just used to dominate the VFL and it was a shame that he couldn't show the same, other than glimpses, at AFL level.

Will make watching Port games a whole lot more interesting now :)

If Primus is true to his word and lets him play most of the season we'll get a good indication of why the coaches rated him highly, if they were right about him that is.

ST might need to find a new avatar!

Diminishes the number of gippy players on the list with the Anvil gone too.

It's a shame JMac never found a niche in the team.

I think ultimately because he wasn't good enough to crack midfield in this side and didn't have the versatility to play anywhere else.

Thats no shame. I think he will go alright at Port.

Really didn't think he was much chop, thought he was average at best, so no big loss.

Though there were lots of people on this board who actually rate(d) him, will see if his form at his newest club warrants those opinions.

Harsh. Not a dissimilar situation to Heath Scotland in 2003. OK player who couldn't consolidate a place in a list far inferior to this one. Done alright for himself, has Heath.
Scotland was always a quality player. MM didn't like him. In both 2002 and 2003 he was more than deserving of a game but had to play half a season in the VFL before getting his change and then playing well enough to hold it for the second half of the season. Port were crazy (and stupidly stubborn) not to take him in a Stevens deal and then when they didn't we were stupid not to make him want to stay.

I don't mind McCarthy but he has never shown what Sctoland did at the respective stages of their careers.

Good luck to him at Port, but in all honesty, from a purely Collingwood perspective, good riddance.

Hopefully he's the last in a long line of Reserves Superstars we've recruited in the last decade and seemed to persist with despite the obvious lack of ability at the top level.

Best of luck to the bloke. Never a world beater but if he can prolong his career a further 5-6 years I would be happy for him.

Danny stanley is a better comparison than Heath Scotland. Scotland hated the coach.

A reasonably capable footballer unable to crack into a quality lineup. Agree with mark, he will play 100 plus games. As will Stanley.
McCarthy has produced a lot more in the AFL than Stanley ever did at the Pies (and Stanley didn't have the competition for spots). Stanley would play games for 5-10 possessions, kick no scores and looked lost on the ground. McCarthy played a team game and could hold his position.

Stanley had a better dozen games in 2011 playing as a forward for the wooden spooners than McCarthy has ever had. He was only a kid when Collingwood flicked him.

Both were slow developers at a club that had an abundance of fast developers.
Staley never showed he was capable at senior level at the Pies, McCarthy did, that's what I'm saying.

Stanley played for 3 seasons at the Pies, that's plenty of time for a kid who already has a mature body to find his feet, especially in a side that had spots available. He was the same age as McCarthy when he got delisted. He never played well for us and couldn't convert VFL form to AFL form, McCarthy showed in patches he could play at AFL level even in his 1st season. As for Stanley's 2011 season, judge it against McCarthy's year in 2012 when he's also given the opportunities in a crap side, but it really makes no difference because we're talking about their time at Collingwood and getting delisted. I don't really see the similarities between the two, especially when McCarthy was given the option to be retained.
