Re: Favre Retires... Again

Well there's another report now that his agent is pushing for the Jets to release him so that he can sign with the Vikings. And the article snippet (on rotoworld) was suggesting this might play on in another month's time just like the Green Bay incident.....ie, he'll say he's retired until right at the time of OTA's and then demand a release so he can play again for another team (vikings).

Re: Favre Retires... Again

I hope he stays retired this time. If GG's rumours are spot on, it is going to be a long off season. We don't need another big circus about him coming out of retirement and which team he plays for.

Interesting the Jets online shop has 50% off all Favre stuff!

Re: Favre Retires... Again

Don't really understand what you're saying gg.

Why wouldn't the Jets cut him? There's nothing to be gained by them not cutting him. From my understanding they can't trade him and they need the cap space.

Unless Brett has a way of getting Green Bay to drop their rights on him then he won't be playing again.

Re: Favre Retires... Again

I can't see why another team would want him and the circus that comes with him.
He can't see that he's going to be the difference in getting a team like the Vikes to a SB and I don't see that his ego will let him sit on the bench or being a mentor.

I reckon this time the retirement is for good.:thumbsu:

Re: Favre Retires... Again

the key to all this is in this statement on http://min.scout.com/2/838504.html

ESPN is reporting this morning that Brett Favre has told the Jets he is retiring. The report says that Favre’s agent Bus Cook asked the Jets to release Favre so he could possibly sign with another team, but the Jets declined that option. It would appear that if Favre signs his retirement papers, his cap number will go away from the Jets against the salary cap, but they would still retain the rights to the remainder of his contract.

Favre is not a free agent and therefore can't go to the Vikings, even if he wanted to beacause of the poison pill in his current contract with the Jets. The Vikings angle on this story is over....

Re: Favre Retires... Again

Well the latest news is that Favre has retired, and put the paperwork in himself to the NFL, something he didnt do at Green Bay. And palmed off rumors he wants to play for Vikings. Said his body cant do it anymore.

In a conference call on NFL Network, Brett Favre said he mainly retired because he didn't want to have surgery on his torn biceps.
"It is, it is," Favre answered said when asked if this is truly the end. Favre was also surprised by skepticism that his decision is final. "Physically, if I felt better we might not be having this conversation," he added, implying that his body couldn't hold up. "That's just the writing on the wall." Favre added that he never asked the Jets for his release to go to the Vikings.

I only reported on this tidbit from rotoworld before, namely the bolded bit...

Brett Favre's agent, Bus Cook, reportedly had informal discussions with the Jets about the possibility of Favre being released.
The move would have allowed Favre the option of signing with the team of his choice (Vikings?), but the Jets predictably declined. Though Favre insists he's retired for good, it wouldn't be surprising to hear of Cook seeking that outright release again in a few months.

Re: Favre Retires... Again

That's the best thing for us really, if Favre contiuned to play like he did down the ending stretch of last season with contiuning shoulder problems, we'd be struggling to win many games. I think he's going to stay retired by the things i've read. I just don't see the point.

Re: Favre Retires... Again

With Favre retiring would that mean that Cassel's franchise tag goes down?

It is the average salary of the 5 highest paid in that position. at the time. Brady. P.Manning, Favre, McNabb and some random.

Favre was the highest paid I beleive, so would Cassell's 14.7million go down or because the tag was placed while Favre was still playing it stays at this overpriced amount.

Re: Favre Retires... Again

As per my reply in the Cassell franchised thread:

"I dont think Farve is in the top 5.

For 2008 I believe it is P Manning, T Brady, C Palmer, E Manning and A Rodgers.

The average salary comes from the previous year's salaries so even if Favre was in the top 5 his retirement plans would not impact."

Re: Favre Retires... Again

So who will be your QB?

Thigpen?
Croyle?
Sanchez?

Favre > than the 2 you have. after rehab from his bicep injury

Thigpen deserves a chance. If he's no good the season is gone from what? 5 wins back to 2? No biggie.

Re: Favre Retires... Again

That gnawing "could he" (and there's history of it) just wont go away until Favre really does retire, and even then, he could well do a Jeff George (nagging teams around the league for a job) or a Vinny Testarverde (one day get a call up years after retiring).

SI's Peter King, long a confidant of Brett Favre, believes the future Hall of Famer is retired for good this time.
King cites Favre's injured right biceps and his current comfort zone as reasons for staying retired. He did, however, hint that Favre would consider joining his former mentor Darrell Bevell in Minnesota if his agent could "engineer" the move.

Re: Favre Retires... Again

Its all in the name brother... The Vikings will legitimately think he will make the team better - Primarily because of what he HAS done. Can't blame em, but its funny you will see more fans acknowledge that than the actual team...

Re: Favre Retires... Again

Favre again...

In an interview with ESPN's Ed Werder, Brett Favre insisted that he won't be coming back to the NFL after his second retirement announcement earlier this week.
Favre said he understands why people might not believe this is really the end and admits he could get the itch again when training camp nears.
