Finals Week 1

If that was absolute then the cats would play home finals at geelong yet they don't. The fact of the matter is that Etihad is more a home venue to the cats than the tigers. I get your point but cant see the afl scheduling a game that will get 75k(@mcg) at Etihad.

Would Richmond draw 75000 to an Elimination Final against Port Adelaide, Adelaide of West Coast?

FWIW Collingwood drew 68,000 and 65,000 to Qualifying Finals/Semi Finals against West Coast in recent seasons (with the series ticket)

If Collingwood plays Port there's no reason this game can't be at Etihad.

Collingwood receives first preference in regard to MCG home finals. This was part of the AFL's most recent contract with the MCC.

But seriously, Geelong should not be playing at Etihad in this game. If we finish top 2 we deserve a home final. Ok, that can't be Kardinia Park, but it should be the venue in Victoria which is the next best thing to our home ground and provides the next best advantage. That is the MCG, not Etihad.

Finals are played in the higher ranked team's home state. The AFL decides the venue, which depends on contracts and estimated attendance. Hawks, Pies and Tigers will get higher crowds so those games will be at the MCG. Cats play at Etihad. Likewise Sydney and GWS home finals are played at ANZ, GC at the Gabba.

Assuming these results for Round 23:

Essendon stripped of premiership points on Monday
Geelong defeat Brisbane
Hawthorn defeat Sydney
Port defeat Carlton
North defeat Collingwood
Essendon defeat Richmond

then we would see the unlikely event of Sydney and Hawthorn playing each other in consecutive rounds, and Collingwood and North playing each other in consecutive rounds.

Would be quite weird! Although not very likely to happen due to the Essendon/Richmond game requirement. Can't see the Bomber players getting themselves emotionally pumped up again.

If North were to beat Collingwood, unlikely but possible, the AFL would be in a bind.

Collingwood play on the Sunday, but a potential Fremantle v Collingwood semi would have to be played on the Friday night due to the Subiaco being unavailable on the Saturday. If that occurred that semi may need to be a Sunday day game.

We would draw more if space was available. Tiger fans are hungry. Beware the hungry tiger.

Maybe. But it would reverse a pretty significant downward trend in finals attendance. Collingwood, for what it's worth was pretty hungry in 2011. They drew 1.27m to their home and away games, the second largest home and away season of all time!

Would Richmond draw more to an Elomination Final? A slot that typically draws lower than expected crowds?

The Brisbane Lions can still make it:
Beat the Western Bulldogs tomorrow and Geelong next week (know it won't happen :()
Port Adelaide defeats Carlton
Essendon lose their points.

Great to dream until the final siren tomorrow.

There's a few of those ridiculous scenarios floating around for a few teams now....

Adelaide beat West Coast (by 5 goals approx)
Collingwood beat North Melbourne
Port Adelaide beat Carlton (by 5 goals approx)
AFL strip Essendon's points

Crows in finals -

Yes, I understand that. My point is that if the AFL wanted to properly reward a team that has finished top 2 in this situation, Geelong would be playing at the MCG rather than bottom 8 Collingwood and Richmond, as the MCG is closer to a home advantage than Etihad for Geelong. Not that Geelong don't slaughter teams at Etihad - they do, often. But the MCG is our true 'second home ground'.

But obviously that is not going to happen - dollars will come before rewarding a club for a superior H and A season.

Crows can't make finals if Lions win both games, and port beat carlton. Lions will be 4 points clear of Adelaide no matter what they do

Collingwood in 2011 had won the GF the year before. So yes they had a record draw for h&a matches the year after. We would, I suspect be similar the year after we won our first granny since 1980 and it would be interesting to compare the two figures. I fail to see the relevance of the comparison, however. Collingwood and Richmond have the biggest core base of supporters (Essendon and Carlton are arguably up there as well). Richmond is peculiar given its large base that it has gone through such a large period without a finals appearance. Collingwood had the Colliwobbles but it often made finals.

Crazy scenario - everything would have to fall into place - but it could conceivably happen. If it did happen the Crows would easily become the least deserving finalist in the history of the AFL (where the AFL is defined as the competition starting in 1990).

OK, so it then becomes:

Brisbane lose to one of either Bulldogs or Geelong

Maybe, Maybe not

Essendon the club that is 'arguably up there' drew 37000 in their last finals fixture against a non Victorian club...

In 2009 Collingwood drew 1.19m across the home and away season and drew just 62,000 to a cut throat Elimination Final against Adelaide (notorious for strong historical travel support)

It's probably useful to use actual attendance for precedence...

But hey, I'm assuming this intangible 'core support' is up in the clouds as well

This makes the most sense but as we know the AFL and sense don't come together often

We play an almost even amount of 'home' games at Etihad and the MCG, but the upside to playing at the MCG is greater, and so should be rewarded. That is where the club would prefer the game was played. But I realise that isn't going to happen.
