Converted garages aren't bad, cousin had one as his bedroom room at their place.

Longest I lived with one of my mates was for maybe 5 years total on and off at a few different houses.

It was great as long as the temperature didn't go past 30 degrees or so. That's when things got uncomfortable and not even a portable air con could do anything.

Otherwise it was great. It was a lot bigger than the master bedroom in the main house.
