First pick in 2007 draft?

I think alot will depend on how recruiters and scouting teams view the 'classes' within the draft class itself. Much has been made of the overall quality of the draft, and how deep it runs, but there will still be a further difference in quality within the group itself.

At this stage I imagine there is a cluster of 8-10 guys in that first 'elite' group, so to speak, before that 'next round' of 15-20 guys (deemed fairly even all the way out to the 2nd round) begins. Basically, if we end up with a pick within that 'next round', our ability (or any clubs ability for that matter) to trade up or down will be, I suspect, significantly easier than in other years, such is the quality that stretches out.

That all being said though, clubs will be alot smarter (and therefore harder) in their dealings than say, 2001 (as you've rightfully pointed out).

The one thing going for us is , the quality and quantity of the talls in this draft. Most clubs will take a tall before small if they are quality.
Hanson, Sellar ,Thorp , Gumbleton,Riewoldt, will all go early. Selwood as I understand it is not lightning so he may not be the first small picked.

We have hope but I remember watching the U18 champs and the TAC U18 GF , kids like Thomas and Jones shot up on their performances and if he performs well in the big games there is no telling how early he could go.

I know this is pretty early to be speculating but with the article on Tom Hawkins coming via FS pick I thought it may be an interesting discussion to see what people think we should go for with our first pick. Keeping in mind this is likely to be somewhere between 12 and 16 (so Sellar and co. will be gone by then) should we go for another tall, an onballer, best available?....if you have any names that may go around this mark feel free to mention them.

Hey, YOTC i think we will be looking at picks 5 - 10. We should be aiming for the best key forward as well as Tom Hawkins. Then as much leg speed as possible. Alot of the talls in this draft move realy well. Don`t give up on snaring a Gibbs or Sellar yet!

I haven't really investigated the draft this year, but if my memory serves me correctly, Joel Selwood is a top 5 prospect.

Certainly wishful thinking (although on last night's performance, highly realistic) that he will slip to us if that is the case.

I'd like to see us pick up a QUALITY small defender. I know that may seem like a low priority given what is available in the top 10 of the draft most years, but the likes of Davey, Didak, Matera (in years gone by), Milne and Farmer have proved extremely troublesome for our defense.

If not, a disciplined and injury free Steve Johnson type player would do us the world of good. Somebody with an x-factor and a bit of class. Although, we still have Dopey Owen on the sidelines recovering from injury.

Seb, with the number of quality talls sitting pretty at the moment, logic would dictate that they'd get a clean look early on. On the back of that, it's been suggested that Selwood would be looking at a range 6-10 range right now.

In keeping with the rich vein of optimism, Ryley Dunn was a consensus top 5 prospect for much of 2003, but even he fell out to pick 10. Not suggesting the same will happen to young Joel, but it does go to show that much can change come November.

We can at least wish, for now.
