In my area it used to be Jungle Jims Fish and Chips in Vermont South, Vic until it changed hands. These days I go to Captain's Choice Fish and Chips which is in Brentford square in Vermont.

It's almost like he forgot he was the thread starter.

I don't get it, my partner is asian and cooks the most amazing fish I've ever had. All sorts of fish all different ways, he's a gun cook though.

Anyway, I was in the Altona area a few weeks back for work and picked up a lunch pack from a Fish'n'Chip joint somewhere on a main/semi-main road and it was awesome. Heaps of chips and the biggest piece of flake I have had in ages. Don't remember the name or location as I rarely venture to that side of town so my apologies.

There's a difference between good fish and good fish n chips though. I love a lot of Asian-cooked fish dishes but the good old fried or grilled flake with a side of spuds isn't one of them.

Greeks definitely make the best fish and chips. The one I used to go to was owned by Greeks, it was great, not expensive, and they always gave you free stuff. Now it's owned by Asians, I had it once, never went back again.

My new one is owned by Greeks again, and im back to quality fish and chips, with a couple of freebies thrown in

Usually you can tell the quality of your fish and chip store by the people who run it.

Asians: Not that great......

Greeks: Great, though some aren't.

Our F&C we usually get is from Kailis in Freo, not the best but they're close to home. There was an awesome one in Willagee when I was a kid several years ago which has since shut down.

I got called racist for saying the same thing about subway. Hey gopower.

Even McCains beer battered chips, deep fried in 'superfry' or duck fat, are fantastic.

Eureka Fish & Chips (on Eureka st) here in Ballarat are the best with their only downfall being horrible dim sims.

Passable, but not to bad. Their are no decent fish n chip shops in Ballarat.

The best i have been to is the Bridge fish n chip shop in Mordialloc.

Steve's on Sturt St, Ballarat. Really good. Been run by the same Greek brothers for decades. Their hamburgers are amazing.

Here in Adelaide, the best ones seem to be the ones along the coast. There's a reasonable old school one in Glenelg, and an excellent one in Semaphore (always a 20+ minute wait with a line up out the door but it's well worth it).

Funnily enough another place that does decent fish and chips is the canteen at my work, though these days that's a rare treat as I'm trying to eat better.

I'm walking distance from about 4 different fish and chip/chicken shops. There's one across the road from my place. When I first moved in (about 2.5 years ago), it was run by an Indian family. The fish and chips was awful, but they made fantastic authentic curries (and they always threw in a free bag of pappadums and other sides). Got taken over by another Indian mob, who kept the curries, but their curries were terrible (and wasn't brave enough to try the fish and chips). Changed hands a couple more times since, and the curries have gone. The current mob that operate the shop must have a literacy problem because they ignored the 'No Junk Mail' sign on my letter box so I ignore them in return.

There's a chicken shop at the other end of my street, and they are brilliant. On the rare times I feel like the old fish and chip/chicken shop, they're generally my first preference.

There's another couple of chicken/fish shops a little further away from me. One was a true fish and chip shop (i.e. no chicken) and was very good. The other was a chicken/fish shop and awful was being kind to that shop.
