AFL Club
Geelong
Geelong has five players named in the All Australian squad announced by the AFL. The Cats had the equal most of any club, with the Hawks, Sydney and Fremantle also having five players each named in the squad.

Joel Selwood, Corey Enright, Andrew Mackie, Steven Motlop and Harry Taylor have all been named for consideration in the final 22 player team that will be announced on 16 September.

Great stuff.
Selwood and Taylor are locks. And I'd expect to get at least 1 of the other 3.
Quite a coup for Mots!

would be hard to leave any out. but knowing the way they make the team up these days, it will be 21 midfielders and a ruckman.

i think if lingy wasn't there we would have been lucky to get anyone through, what with how rough and mean and not-in-melbourne-upstartish we are. probably threatened to show him the patented SJ high bump if he didnt...ah i give up. i am losing respect for the old fella big time this year.

I hope Motlop gets named but I could say that given an indigenous team is playing in Ireland this year that increases his chances. I agree StevieJ was stiff but maybe the suspensions went against him.

I'll tip we get Selwood, Taylor, & Motlop named in the squad.

Terrible squad, not surprised though.

No Stevie J is confusing to say the least.

I think it's fair enough. He's playing as a midfielder and, considering the competition there, you'd have to put up Ablett numbers to make the squad in 16 games. He has no-one to blame but himself. And 17.21 in front of goals doesn't exactly help his candidacy either.

if i had that list to pick from i would have a hard time putting together a balanced team i reckon.

How so? Plenty of genuine defenders and forwards. And they've put a few midfielders in there as well.

I think Taylor, Selwood and Enright will make it. Can't see Mackie getting in and Motlop needed to go beserk last week to push past his competition. I think they've got our nominations pretty much spot on: good for Mackie to get recognised (again). I thought Bartel should have been thereabouts, but not fussed with that.

Haven't been on the main board yet, but looking forward to the Richmond supporters' assessment of the selections.

Stevie J EXTREMELY stiff.

He is averaging top 2 or 3 possessions per game this year, kicked 17 goals and was arguably our best player in the first half of the year (until Selwood took over).

Stevie J unfortunately gets forgotten as the football public is "used" to his brilliance.. where a player like Wingard gets noticed for doing it the first time... yet Buddy makes it!!

Would have Stevie J as our 2nd best player this year after Selwood and in the top 12 in the entire AFL.

Rubbish decision.

Who are the ruckmen, MCED?

If Wingard gets in, it will be as a forward. Johnson didn't kick enough goals to be considered as a forward and didn't play enough games to be in as a midfielder. It was always going to happen. Felt more sorry for him in 2009, when he was playing the best football of his career before being injured. This time, he has missed because of his lack of self-control.

Who are the ruckmen, MCED?

One of Minson/Goldstein and Roughead in the forward line. Without looking at the stats, I think Minson and Goldstein have been considered the standouts in the ruck this year and, since Roughead has spent a fair amount of time in the middle as well and is a certain selection, you only need one of the other two.

by my count;
def;8(tall -5, smll -3)
mids; 20
for;10 (tall -6, smll -4)
ruck; 2

too many mids, and too many talls is my point. its not an even spread of talent across the positions. there are alot of tall forwards compared to small forwards, however in really on the field you would normally have 2 tall and 4 small...

Yeah, rightly or wrongly, the squad is being used as a reward in itself, rather than as a genuine squad from which you pick a better team.

good to get 5 nominations Taylor and Selwood should be locks for the 22 and would love to see enright in again, consistently in our best players:thumbsu:

Also anyone else think Hodge is fortunate or am i the only one?

I'd say that Enright, Mackie, Mitchell, Gibson, McVeigh and Malceski could all be considered small defenders. Michael Johnson wouldn't look out of place on a HBF either, though he can hardly be considered 'small'. Similarly, they'll probably put three talls in the forward line (Roughead and two others), two smalls (my money would be on Thomas and Wingard) and whichever mid they couldn't fit anywhere else (don't be surprised if Selwood finds himself on the HFF).

How does Luke Hodge get in and Stevie J doesn't?

5 Sydney players is a bit of a joke as well, those guys are the biggest downhill skiers around.

Don't really give much credit to AA selection much these days I mean Natanui and Cyril getting in last year was laughable.

All those media guys have 0 credibility.
