I know I'm slow, but only just got round to Monday night's Footy Classified on the IQ.

Walls made some comment about Richo having five stupid coaches who didn't know how to use him properly (Walls was one of them).

Made me interested in how Richmond fans who knew all five felt about them and how they compare to Terry. I can remember Frawley and Geischen but can't recall who was before them. Were they really all rubbish coaches?

As a Hawthorn fan, I remember Knights being shocking and Schwab was too soft on the players. (We're all just basking in the sunlight coming out of Clarko's ass these days).

At the end of the day, there is only one way to assess coaches and that's results. Frawley had some decent results. His name has been a bit unfairly tarnished by Wallace trying to make himself look better. I didn't like him though. He reminded me too much of potato farmer from the American south. I liked Geischen. He looked like a hard ass. He strung a few wins together. Northey did ok. Overall though, none achieved their goal of coaching the club to a premiership.

john northey was probobaly the best of our most recent coaches (not including wallace - we will see) I was young then but he took us to a preliminary final which is the best result ive seen the tigers acheive since ive followed them.

I beleive we only offered northy a 1 year contract a bit silly considering he took us to finals. He then accepted a 3 year deal at brisbane?

yes, the others were terrible.

Could not agree more. No one has known hot to use Richo and Frawley was the worst. He was so stupid it still makes me wont to hurl. His game plan was kick it long to Richo but every other side knew it so they would double and triple team him. I remember watching a game against Melbourne one day (which we lost) and Anthony Ingerson who was soon after delisted picked up a truck load of touches just dropping into the hole infront of Richo. Frawley did that for years he was such a dumb arse. He is so dumb that a couple of years ago i heard him on the radio lamenting that terry wasn't getting the side to kick long to Richo!. It's fine to kick long to Richo when it's got in quick and its not the only option you use for 3 years but please for a bloke who is meant to be well respected he certainly hasn't got there because of his smarts. Richo would have kicked a thousand goals by now if he had of played in a side which had made the finals more than twice in his 16 years. And i could be wrong but for one of those years we made finals i think he was out with a knee. 760 goals or whatever it is in a rubbish side is a pretty decent effort!

Ok, you officially have no idea. Frawley had one good season. With Richo, Knights, Campbell, Brodders, Gale, Ottens, Cameron, Gaspar, the Kellaways, he had a seasoned and talented group. That he thought that group was Houlahoop and Hudson away from flag contention, despite losing 2 of 3 finals by a combind 150 points, proves how clueless he was.
Gieschen a hard ass??? Are you joking? He was the king of spin. He and Spud should get a potato farm together. Spud can plant em and Giesch can talk over the soil.
Northey was easily the best of the bunch.

A tough call, and proves that Walls really has NFI.

Richo has been showing some great form this year, and looks like he's really enjoying his footy.

Well done to TW and the coaching staff for having the creativity to him loose up the ground :thumbsu:

Walls played Richo from the goalsquare and he kicked 91 goals that season... he's often boasted about being the only coach to get "the best" out of Richo.

Walls is a w***er. along with shaw all walls did was prepar the club for the great spud frawley........Northey has been by far our best in the last 15 years.....a richmond man

I don't think anyone knows how to best use Richo, at times, Richo included.

As for Frawley's strategy, would you have preferred kicking short to Richo?

It is not a bad strategy if they kick it one time in three. If they will triple team him, that means someone must be free elsewhere for the other two times. In any case, where were the crumbers. At the time, Pagan had a similar idea of kicking it long to Carey. Even if he didn't mark it, the players knew what to expect.

At the time I didn't think we were far from a flag. I certainly wasn't calling for a rebuild. Sometimes you just don't know how close you are. Five years ago I thought the Swans were a garbage team destined to spend a decade on the bottom of the ladder. Instead of rebuilding, they traded away their draft picks for average players and got themselves a premiership.

I guess the lesson of the Swans success is that a bit of faith, stability and optimism has value. If the team has good spirit then all the individuals within it can improve themselves.
