**** your kidding. Both Stinger & Chris are key 2nd tier midfielders. Laverne will now get Bucks, but we need to watch Burns & Woey too. Would like to see Reilly on a wing. Time for Bode & Goody to step up.

Chewie will become the 36th player we've used this year!

I've just got over a dose of the flu myself. Ladhams is definately a loss, but I feel Stenglein is covered the way Shirley is going. Maybe Torney can play the 2nd tagging role.

Good point Dave. As long as it is not Mattner (though I realise he is injured).

What worries me more than anything is how many of the side are borderline flu bug types !!! last week we had Burns, Roo & Macca,

Don't the AFC believe in flu jabs or hot lemon/honey drinks or even a vicks vapor rub,

What a crap time of the year for a flu virus to go through the club,

No wonder Shirley has put his hand up for Buckley

Agree on someone tagging Woewodin or Burns but not sure who, hasn't Torney been tried before on a tagging role earlier in the year ??

Just got back from Crows training, where I had a chat with Michelangelo Rucci.

As reported, he said that Stenglein and Ladhams have already been ruled out with the flu, and they obviously were absent from training. Begley was there but didn't train and Rucci said he probably won't be playing either.

He said that the ins were likely to be Bode, Schuback and Reilly.

Carey trained freely and Rucci said he will play.

Rucci doesn't believe that Adelaide can win. He said that the reason Adelaide have trouble with Collingwood, Port and Brisbane is that they all play with a 4 man forward line, and 5 across halfback. This clogs our forward line and makes it hard for us to score, while on the rebound, they score a lot more easily because of their open forward lines.

Adelaide play the same game plan every week he said, and refuse to adjust to this, and while they don't he doesn't think they will ever beat these 3 teams on a consistent basis.

Food for thought because there's a lot of truth in it.

Gary Ayres like his players to be accountable "full stop" & at times this style of play can lead us wide open on the rebound,

Would like to see us play a lose man in defense if that's the way those 3 clubs go in against us,

What type of player is Schuback, anyone know much about him?

I have heard he has been in pretty good form for Glenelg, would he come into the team before Reilly?

Schuback is a forward / midfeilder, so a useful replacement for Ladhams, but would have thought both Gags & Doggas form has been better. Personally, I would bring in Reilly first.

As long as that loose man is Hart or Bassett & not Kenny like in the last showdown.

I checked but its not there. They've stopped putting it up in recent weeks before the Crows team is posted.

It's opinions like those of Mr Rucci that make me glad I'm well away from the world of the 'tiser.

Look, maybe we'll win tomorrow night. Maybe we won't. It may be because our game plan is a pile of poo, or it may be because of a bunch of other factors.

If our game plan is so awful, we wouldn't be in with a shout against the teams he mentioned. The fact that we have been competitive in every game against Brisbane, Port and Collingwood over the past 2 years (barring the first final last year, and arguably the Collingwood home game last year when they kicked a bunch of goals in the 2nd term) suggests that there's enough in the way we play to at least worry these other sides.

If our game plan is so awful and so vulnerable against sides playing in a Port / Collingwood / Brisbane style, why don't other sdes do it against us and have success? Essendon try to keep an open forward line and push back, but we beat them alright a few weeks ago.

As for lack of adaptability - that's also rubbish. Against Carlton, for example, Burton spent a lot of time drifting back as a spare link man / hole filler in defence, and the Crows shot the Pagan's paddock gameplan to pieces. So much so, that Pagan was roundly criticised for a lack of adaptability to cop with our tactics.

I have just read that potentially up to EIGHT Adelaide players are in doubt because of the flu.

Crows hit by illness
August 14, 2003

UP to eight Adelaide Crows are in doubt for tomorrow night's AFL clash against Collingwood due to illness.

The second-placed Crows have been ravaged by a series of head colds and stomach viruses which have swept through the club.

Midfielders Tyson Stenglein and Chris Ladhams both missed today's training and are unlikely starters for the encounter with the fourth place Magpies at Telstra Dome.

"Simon Goodwin, Brett Burton, Matthew Bode, Graham Johncock, and James Begley have also been put on the sick list," a club spokesman said.

It's not like the AFC to play mind games but seriously EIGHT players, this can't be true, please god don't let this be true!

Spot on Noddy. How ridiculous that in this day and age that somebody wouldn't have a flu shot. It's about as stupid as getting your wife/girlfriend pregnant nine months before september.

Rucci may be [Removed by request. Adrian] but he's dead right, we can't win tomorrow night, though it's got stuff all to do with the gameplan.

-Trip back from Subi
-8 players in doubt with the flu, plus the remnants of it with at least 3 other key players
-Carey can't be moving at 100% either

And that's just from our perspective.

We won't even get close now, which is disappointing, as I was hoping to go through the whole year without having lost by more than 18 points.

I've said it before but I'll say it again, what ****es me off more however is how all the 'experts' and the like will say how Collingwood completely has our measure, and has the psychological wood on us, which is crap really IMO.

They beat us last year in round 14, the week after we came back from the Subi trip, and got in front by 11 goals in the first half. And they got us in the prelim on our 4th week travelling in a row. This year's loss could have gone either way, and they played well to get the points, while they got up by a couple in 2001 at Footy Park, in a pretty good game.

Anyway, everything happens for a reason, so maybe someone upstairs really wants the Pies to win this week, but we'll get them later on.

Rucci makes a good point with this as that is the reason we usually struggle with Collingwood and Port. You should have asked him if he thinks that Port's game plan could stand up in finals.;)

Your kidding yourself if you reckon taking a flu shot will keep you immune from all flus.

They all have FLU shots but it doesn't stop you from getting every strain of the virus. Also it must be remembered that week Burns & McLeod had the virus - the rest of the squad then travelled in a confined space with these lads to Perth & back - plus Bodey was chucking his guts up and he was on there flight over. It is no wonder a couple of the lads have caught the bug. Oh well we fight with what we have.

Spot on k. Having a flu shot doesn't guarantee immunity even thought it increases resistance. There's always still a chance of infection, especially, as k also alluded to, since there are many virus strains, many of which evolve. It's just bad luck that's all. Just another test we will have to try to get past.

ant, I agree with most of your post, except the bit which say we won't get close. Whilst I don't think we will win, we will be competitive yet again. IMO we will lose by a close margin. Remember the Pies aren't travelling that well at the moment & if they play like last week again (which I doubt), we may actually have an against-the-odds win.
