Religion Folau

The limiting of rights has always been a facet of working in private businesses. That should be the focus, not this boogeyman.

I think you will find it is the core concern for those concerned about this case who are outside the religious community, whose prime focus is on elevating ‘Izzy’ into a martyr.

Agree. Surely the publication he paraphrased from should also eventually be banned. History will look back and laugh at social media and what people were allowed to publish.
Irony is if folks don't believe in this literal book-version of Christianity and the Bible, how does it affect them? It is merely rhetoric. They are free to disbelieve in a magic book. It's ok, I don't believe in David Copperfield neither. Claudia Schiffer on the other hand 😎.

The public sphere is much more amendable to freedom of speech than the private sphere.

This and the social media stuff requires a recasting of freedom of speech within private businesses. That's what the conservatives upset about this need to understand.
and this is the ambiguity at play here, what does Folau's Instagram account represent. It is really neither public nor private yet both. And Izzy misread the tea leaves(and warnings) in this zeitgeist.

The state isn't involved in this.
That is the insidious element. Folau did have warning, he could have been shtum. It does not make sense to me however I am not a believer in the faith. The question falls on whether he has liberty to broadcast his private (and offensive to some) views in a quasi-public outlet and what authority has standing to mete out punishment and censureship.

. Nothing to do with woke culture or anything like that.. it's all about trying to make sure they get people through the gates.
the 4th Estate business(model) haemorrhaging revenue. They resort to amplifying controversy in non-story(non stories). This met some threshold, but it is 4th estate grasping to a story, tail-wagging-dog, flogging-a-dead-horse.

I don't see how it does affect them personally.

There could be an argument that passages of the bible spread hatred and intolerance but countering that with hatred and intolerance is not logical.

I hope his career is ruined and that he ends up destitute. A complete flog.

Funny that old mate Mundine has now come out of the woodwork and tried to play the race card. An even bigger flog.

It's a list of things that if you choose to do you are sinning, except one of them isn't a choice. So it isn't the same.

Saying you are doing the wrong thing by drinking is not the same as saying you are doing the wrong thing by being gay.

It's still pushing the view that being gay is a choice, and an incorrect and evil one at that.

See the difference? Can you see why it's not the same?

You need to take that up with God, Israel is just a messenger.

The ARU might be better to not employ anyone declaring to be Christian or Muslim... if the official books of their faith contain some type of hate speech

Seems like he's been set up. Just prior to the Gay Marriage vote our politicians and religious leaders in the community were saying much much much much worse. Subsequently, due to a postal plebiscite, they moved on - but still maintain their positions as politicians and religious leaders. Then the people who were tricked into believing this stuff are left isolated, still saying the same stuff that was ok circa 2017.

I wonder what, during this election campaign, what Tony Abbott has got to say on the Israel Folou saga?

One other question that amidst the noise I haven’t seen touched on yet.

And it’s an elephant in the room for mind.

If instead of Israel Folau, it was Sonny Bill Williams tweeting out homophobic Koranic verses, does anyone on here honestly believe the power brokers of the sport, the media and sponsors, would be as quick to openly confront and condemn Sonny Bill and his views as they were Israel and his?

ASICS have dropped him as a brand ambassador now. As someone who grew up in the 80s enduring casual homophobia almost every day of my life I can't even begin to say how pleased I am that Folau has been called out. Not particularly for myself, I've been out longer than I was in now and just think Folau is a pillock but for young kids who are struggling with their sexuality and shouldn't have to put up with this shit.

I don’t think Folau cares about the money at this point somehow.

Yes.

Out of curiosity, would you be OK with a Muslim player being sacked for posting some **** from the Quran declaring Homosexuals should be stoned to death?
Stoned to death and going to an imaginary place are two completely different things. One results in inciting murder and the other results in nothing.

Also why arent we concerned with everyone else he sends to his imaginary land? Why just homosexuals? The offended are both stupid for caring about imagination land and discriminatory for only focusing on the homosexual part.

I guess the alcoho’s, fornicators, idolators, liars, and thieves etc just don’t have as powerful a lobby group behind them I’m afraid?
