How to beat Melbourne, in four not-so-easy steps

The last part of that quote sounds more confrontational on paper than it actually was in practice, but what if a team can take away their chances to intercept?

On paper, a fit and firing Brisbane forward line have all the tools to do so, providing a perfect test case.

We saw it in action for a half last year. In Round 12 – off the back of +8 clearances and +11 contested possessions, it must be noted – Brisbane shot to a 20-point half time lead.

Their 14 scoring shots is still an equal first half high for any team against the Demons since the start of last year.

It was noticeable how – even allowing for the Demons not being at their final form yet – there was little willingness to peel off and intercept, and as a flow on it opened up opportunities for Brisbane.

He's thrown up lots of ideas but no coherent plan.

Sometimes it's simpler than people try to make it and it gets back to your cattle. We're a good team and when we led Melbourne by 20 points at half time we played really well. Clunking marks all over the ground. Once we dropped off a bit in intensity and execution our midfield just couldn't go with them and they blitzed us.

So to beat them in a big game firstly you have to have good players on every line , execute and play well. If you do that there is a gameplan as to how you bring it in generally if you have a fee crack at it , how you defend , and how you intend to lock it in.

I do think his observation about making it very messy is an astute one. I believe the quick penetrative chaos ball is something that would be to our advantage. And getting as many around the contest as your structure allows. Because when they blitzed us their M/F seemed to have a lot of space to work in and only one or two at the most to beat from stoppage.

Overall though let's not get too hung up on Melbourne. We have to get there first fresh and fit. And who knows they could self implode at some point. Seen it happen many times before.

Young? We’re the third oldest list.
I am assuming that is average age per best 22 played for the games so far in this season.
Not the full list.
As a full list I think our average age is more like 24.

Have to factor in injuries to older players as well. Young players often more likely to play when older ones are injured etc.
Doesn’t seem to have hurt West Coast there with the 4th oldest list even with all of their problems so far this year.
Doesn’t bode well for them.

Its one thing to be young and dreadful - norf. Its way worse to be old and dreadful.

Got a spare ticket for Dreamtime at the G, section Q51 on level 4 row HH, concession if anybody is interested. Was going to go with my sister but not feeling well. Shall I ask on Richmond and Essendon boards too?

We have booked flights for Bris, Fri 1st July and return flights booked for Sunday 10 July, thinking we could get to the Bombers game.(before today was showing Sat night fixture to be confirmed).Making matters worse, the previous game v Dogs, is scheduled for Thursday night- so we miss both)
Today the pricks change our game to Sunday, so we'll miss out. Tried pushing our flights back, but was going to cost an extra 600 for our family.
Safe to say I'm mighty pissed off, considering the crappy hand(fixture) we get dealt as Melbourne based supporters year on year.

The rolling fixture was ok during the Covid period.
But it just downright sux now.
Especially for people travelling.

Yeah it really sucks trying to lock in any interstate games at the moment. Really can only book things at the last minute at high cost

We were wondering why Ryan didn't play on the weekend and thought he was injured.

Even better, he had a baby girl, how adorable for Ryan and his wife, Emi - what gorgeous pics - Ryan Lester Welcomes Baby Girl

Congratulations to the Lester's :D
FYI we were told on the weekend in the Hawks thread by our friendly club insider.

Just listening to last week's roar deal. Interesting point - we aren't playing against teams in our echelon, in context of how little our 8/1 record was.

Looking at that from a different angle - playing teams that don't challenge us, means we don't get to practice the intensity we need. Like had been discussed here -we do what's needed and can't get intensity much above that.

Makes me really pleased we have the harder run of games about to happen, and Melbourne late in the season is going to important as a conditioning for finals.

Felt the case last year where we faced 5 bottom 10 teams heading into finals, then coming up against Melbourne in the QF.
