Research Footballers who played under an assumed name

Bill McCulloch was probably the 'Williams' shown in Melbourne's R1/R2 1897 sides, because like Proudfoot he was a copper who wasn't officially allowed to play.
Nothing new here, really, but just thought I'd post this. Interesting that the paper was happy to mention that it was an assumed name:-

The Sportsman says (of the rd. 1 1897 game) "Melbourne attacked smartly, and Williams---an assumed name---went near putting the ball between the posts."

Just came across the case of Dick Walker who played for Geelong (1893-1898) and Carlton (1899)
His entire career was played under a assumed name - his real name being Edward Slann Kishere - the story is told here

This is an example of one of those very sad stories one occasionally comes across when researching "family/life history" details.

ES Kishere appears to have played under the name Dick Walker because that is the one he probably grew up with from about two years of age. His mother was pregnant with him when his father JS Kishere committed suicide in December 1871:

The mother (Jane) then re-married in 1874 to a William Walker:

and she died in 1919:

The name Anderson (often without quotation marks) gets plenty of mention in various papers as a South Melbourne player in 1898, whether it's in team lineups or match reviews. I've no idea at the moment who he was, presumably an alias for someone.

Edit:- http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/108484240
This article in The Record (newspaper) names Anderson as one of four South players who represented the League vs. Ballarat. Yet it suggests another South player in Adamson also played. I've seen both Anderson and Adamson called "Bud" in this paper, perhaps they are one and the same?

The lineup for that game can be found here ^, Adamson, Pleass, Southern and Trim are the South players, no mention of Anderson. It now seems very likely that Anderson is Dave Adamson, I haven't seen them both named in the same match report, so I'm pretty sure this should be correct.

(Another) Edit:- http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/108484081
This time The Record has both Anderson and Adamson in the rd. 4 lineup and match report. Jolly is supposed to be in the team (instead of Anderson). Highly confusing, I still suspect it should be D Adamson, but can't be totally sure!!

This also has Anderson and Adamson playing together - perhaps it was the same reporter for both games?

Match report of the Melbourne game says "but Norman, an old player under a new name"

As for this particular version of "Wilson" of Collingwood, I think Fred Leach could be a very strong possibility, but it's just a guess at this stage. Going on a few other match reports I've read from that season, he was playing in the centre, and an absolute star, of course. The Argus report (link posted by you) says "and "Wilson," in the centre, played a splendid game." Everyone who played for the team that day gets a mention in the match report, except Fred Leach, Arthur Leach and Archie Smith (who should have been playing up forward).

The Collingwood lineup for the 1898 rd. 9 game is named in the Herald from the day before the match, Dick Condon was named but didn't play, George Cowell replaced him, the other 19 named played, at least according to the official lineup. Wilson wasn't among those named.

Edit:- The next week The Argus doesn't mention "Wilson" but says "F. Leach, in the centre, and Pannam, on the wing, must be mentioned, both being remarkably clever and quick." http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/9842811

All the papers I've looked at had "Wilson" playing the rd. 9 game in match reports (with F Leach not mentioned), a week later Leach was named again. Seemingly, there was some reason why an alias had to be used for that one game.

Collingwood Forever recognises F. Leach played in rd 9 of 1898.

One of the best threads on big footy.

Racing back in the day had numerous nom de plumes, and assumed names. For a myriad of reasons eg age (too young but could make the postage weight carried).

I imagine youngsters lied about age, name to get into active army service too.

In the early days footballers did use “different” names with the aforesaid policemen playing under pseudonyms the most common.

Well done to all the contributors here, 35Daicos and rbartlett you guys do an amazing service. In all threads of a historical nature.

Some VFL/VFA players played in the Sunday League for some extra cash in the 1940s - to early 1960s under false names.
The VFA killed off the Sunday League when they started playing on Sundays in the early 1960s.
The Sunday League teams were using VFA grounds like Port Melbourne,Yarraville and Brunswick at the time so of course when the VFA started to use their own grounds it made it very hard for the Sunday League to find suitable enclosed grounds as they used to charge a "donation" to get in.
Their finals are supposed to have gotten big crowds to the North Port Oval with lots of fights both on the ground and off with plenty of betting going on as well.

I can add a few VFA

VFA1946-R04 - Sandringham - Listed as 'George' former Regular (Argus), possibly a pseudenym for George Follett
VFA1908-05 - Williamstown - 'McGinty' - Probably Pat 'Paddy' Noonan = http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article69700339
W 'Billy' Dickens - played as 'McIntyre' in some games in 1899 for Footscray

No I'd never heard of him either
His journey was was apparently Hawthorn under 19s - VFA - West Adelaide

Died last year, there was a write up about a medal he owned
here:
He played Hawthorn U/19’s, Hawthorn Reserves, West Adelaide, Central, then VFA.

Bit disrespectful to get on here and say I’d never heard of him either and he died last year.

Who are you? Never heard of you!
