Arli Walker should get there too. More likely to be a smaller mid, has mums size

It‘s exciting that we have first refusal (if they nominate us) on youngsters with a lot of talent and ability. Cannot wait for the next few years to see these sons of guns blossom.

Zero mention of Xavier O'Neill... are the Eagles going to re-rookie him?

Dumont and Menegola are also no slouches if someone needs inside mid depth. Wouldn't be surprised if Menegola winds up at Essendon. Young and Bonner good chances too... lots of list shuffling and discarding for an apparently shallow draft.
Bonner's not a world beater but I was surprised he was cut so early. Reliable HBF

Don't think he said only, but more likely than not that he starts off HB, especially after an ACL

Will be interesting to see if we do shift some magnets though. Purely an example

Boyd Weitering Newman
Williams Marchbank Saad

Gov

Backup

Kemp S Durdin Young
Cincotta Young Cowan

Akuei

Then the Irish lads, who normally start behind the ball

Think 1 or more get repurposed

Repurposed where? We are stacked in the midfield on on the wings. None of the listed players are forwards.

If anything we lack quality depth in the backline . We lose any a few key players from our backline we are shaky. The depth is questionable. A quality key defender and running general defender should be our priority.

Boyd gets low possession numbers playing off half back, not sure how he'd have any more impact playing in front of the ball?
Was playing as a forward with the Dogs VFL side and generally forwards don't get high number of possessions

Boyd would have impact, quick, tackles hard and can actually kick it from 50 unlike many of our small/medium forwards

I think we have a plethora of small/medium defenders, while lacking impact in the forward half

Would like to see one of Gov, Kemp, Williams or Boyd forward of centre

Gov, Williams and Boys all best 22 defenders. Kemp is next in line. Can almost guarantee he will be required most weeks due to injuries.

We need to be careful repurposing players. Our backline lacks depth. Particularly if Weitering and Saad are missing.

Agree we need a high impact medium forward. Whilst we have a decent mix, outside of Curnow we don’t have star quality.

We should cross our fingers and toes that Kemp finds his place - he may be lost to us if pidgeonholed as McGovern's understudy

Don't get me wrong, I love what Boyd brings to the table and maintain that he should have been back in the side before finals - but he was moved to HBF for a reason

Didn’t hear anything from WCE’s on any intention of welcoming any of their delistings back.

Players with versatility are gold

Gov went back, Doc in the middle, Cotts as a forward

The priority for a coach isn’t what's best for the individual, its what's best for team success

Imo Kemp just needs to spend an off season bulking up and working on his one on one work now. Composure with ball in hand comes with games and he showed some great signs late in the season with the offensive part of his game, he was a bit flustered in the finals at times but still showed plenty. Hs defensive work was still very hit or miss though which is why he was dropped over Marchbank imo.

He's been trained as a hybrid forward, wing, half back interceptor etc since coming to the club because his best position was relatively unknown. I think now it's quite clear he has elite potential as a third tall down back but he was playing with a body similar to that of a midfielder or a half backer like Newman. Get his body up to scratch to match some of the brutes and I'd think he comfortably fits into our back 7 next year.

Not sure how much more Kemp can put on, both his parents are slight builds.

Still like him as a Michael Sexton type, able to take on the resting ruck ... who usually kill us with height.

He's got a great frame, he'd have no issues putting on more kgs imo. If not he can still get stronger at the size he's at anyway

(IMO) Kemp is a natural attacking player I think he can develop into a very good defender more because of class than disposition - would like to see him developed into rotating forward/mid - but can understand defensive lines want him there long term and marking depth isnt as stong as it could be - maybe they see him as teh next Docherty type back there. Doch used to dominate intercept marking before his ACL's...and get the ball moving forward fast...as long as Kemo is encouraged to move the ball forward instead of a defensive only lock down defender - I don't think that is his caper

He has played his best footy as an intercepting defender.

Yet he has the attacking mindset that you talk about.

Combine the two and you get a Darcy Moore type role.

I see Kemp and Weiters essentially as a Lever/May style combo.

For sure. I find it odd that we have finally found a role that Kemp can excel in at AFL level and now so many are desperate to turn him into a forward or mid. Give the guy some stability. Also, I've watched Kemp play at least 6 games forward at VFL level. Doesn't look anywhere near as good as he does back. Poor kick for goal and gets lost. As far as being mid, he's never really played there outside of a couple of games at under 18 level. Hard to believe we can turn him into one now.

Over preseason, bulk him up a bit, improve his one-on-one work and he can play as the hybrid 2nd/3rd tall defender. I prefer him to Marchbank in that role, as he is better offensively and improves the age profile of our backline. Also, we played our best footy all year when he was in that role.

Agreed on his forward prowess in the VFL, and also the poor goal kicking.

Marchy (when fit) does seem preferred down back, as does McGovern + S.Durdin in the background to add to the talls mix.

I’d like to see another mobile marking option across half forward where Kemp could fill the role in tandem with Acres switching the wing. Both have good tanks and this also allows Kemp to drift & intercept in defence, whilst Acres is a dangerous mid-sized option in the air too.

I'd say this is our plan for E Hollands, who is quite a bit bigger than Martin

Made a few updates to the sticky - primarily in the "Key Dates" section. Thanks Pommylovescarlton for links.

Relevant to us:
Mon 13-Nov: International Players inclusion on rookie list lodgment -> date Duffy & Monahan will become listed Carlton players.

As for Fantasia - he is still a Port listed player. I expect Port will delist him tomorrow - otherwise he has the option to nominate for the draft - in which case we have to hope no other club grabs him first. But assuming he gets delisted, we can then pick him up in one of the upcoming DFA periods (likely this Wednesday 1st Nov).

Tue 31-Oct: Out-of-contract listed AFL player draft nomination close (national or pre-season draft)
Wed 01-Nov 9am: Delisted Player Free Agency Period (1) commences
Wed 08-Nov 5pm: Delisted Player Free Agency Period (1) closes
Fri 10-Nov 9am: Delisted Player Free Agency Period (2) commences
Fri 10-Nov 5pm: Delisted Player Free Agency Period (2) closes

That doesn't make sense, 2 good draft picks, one Fantasia and a rookie upgrade doesn't go into three (list spots).

List status:
Senior - 32 (36-38)
Rookie - 7 (0-6)
Cat-B Rookie - 2 (0-2)
Total - 41 (44)

Free spots - 3 Senior (and at least one Rookie must be upgraded)

There are 4 senior list spots currently vacant, and one of them will be occupied by the rookie elevation - leaving three spots for Fantasia + 2x draftees.

Frustrating to see players like Will Kelly and Jeremy Sharp available while we persist with Sam Durdin and Carroll.

Sharp is not up to it imo.

Anyhow Port have now officially delisted Fantasia, so assume he will officially sign on with us some point this week
