yes Fremantles list is over rated.
There are certainly standouts which we all know Pav, Bellie, Hase etc.
after that the list drops away very quickly. We keep saying, if they're not performing drop them - Like who with-. lets face it, we certainly do not have the depth. They said Brisbane had 10 first year players in their team, I counted 6 with 2 more who have only played 10 between them.
Where would we have been with 8 first year players in the team?
The last couple of years we have insisted on recruiting these tall lanky "development" type of players.
Brisbane wanted the ball more and they were prepared to put their bodies on the line for it. Too many of ours shirked it, and even when they did such as Cookie, McManus, Murphy and Mundy they were bumped so hard they went flying through the air. Top effort for at least trying.
Until we recruit better bodied up type of players, we will continue to find it hard against the good solid teams.

The list is over rated in its ability to win games they expected to win. This takes mental toughness.
Skill wise it is there but mentally many are not up to buttering up every week and performing like the professional footballers they purport to be. Surely there is individual pride in one's performace??

These fellas have chosen a career in football, we didn't chose it for them.

Also using injuries as an excuse is just carp. Only players on the park win games.

Further more Kapow to say that the" Dockers are dead for me" suggests it was trendy to follow a team on the other side of Aust than the Brisbane lions.
It is getting too hard to support the Dockers? If you always retain your sense of humour and have the occasional laugh it won't be so bleaK

Getting back on topic, on Saturday sports talk on the ABC they posed the question whether our list is overrated and Ben Allan & Jon Dorrotich (reasonably impartial) both made up their combined Eages/ Freo teams.

They only did first 18's on this years form and one list had seven of ours and the other had 6 of ours.

Of theirs interestingly enough , apart from Judd , Stenglien & Chick all of the players they selected of theirs were on their list before Whoosha got there.

Yet they all agreed that the only team that would troubled (indeed has troubled) WCE at Subiaco was us.

People have been saying for quite a while that your team is too slow for the wide expanses of subi but it seems Connolly only just figured it out. Your squad is the smallest in the league and also the 2nd lightest. I'm not sure that has alot of relevance, but it highlights that you probably need some bigger and quicker players.

Lets have a look who was playing against brissy on Saturday Night. Murphy, Johnson, Webster, Crowley, Mundy - youngsters who still need more time to adjust to the demands of AFL and be able to take on the best and shut them down. You cant expect them to just go on a 150 game player and shut them down without fail etc. Connolly was playing quite a few kids. The absences of McPharlin, Haddrill, Walker, Hayden and MCarr are hurting us too, and its questioning the depth of our list - it is not as great as people would like to think. Although Im not CC's biggest fan I think there are more problems facing our quest for a top four finish than just the coach.

so what! big deal sucess is measured in one way, i don't have to spell it out for you. we have done nothing and that goes back to the whole thing from the start, 10 years ago.
1 finals apperance and we got flogged . i don't care who has been blooded anymore, i don't care about stupid stats, you can waffle on about stats all you like the result is still the same. Do you seriously believe that CC would walk away from this team at the end the year if he failed to make the 8? of course not he just dribbles sh*t and has produced nothing at our club.... back when woosha and CC were appointed practically weeks apart how do both teams sit in comparison 2 or 3 years down the track? i don't think many people would argue that both teams were in the same sort of position regarding list and success the year before.and the eagles havent missed th 8 since. and what improvement do we have? beating a top 4 side away ? so what good is it when we lose to the second last team on the ladder at home??
the eagles seem to week in week out are able to get over the mental barrier if that is the latest cliche' and overcome and win. is it that 22 players north of the river have the mental toughness and physical toughness amongst other things to win them games while we south of the river at any given week fall over? is it the water or the coaching skill and structure and RESPECT that woosha commands and the whole organisation for that matter?
I hate the eagles but i respect what they have achieved.

That's what I've been trying to say for a long time.

You celebrate the occassional win over a top four side at their home, neglecting the issue of your own home failures, you're just looking for trouble.

I'd rather win all my games at home, rather then win away over the top four sides. There is security in it.

Actually I see that as the most critical reason why Worsfold defecates from a great height on Connolly.

I can name half a dozen players who were with us and were average or downright appalling or during the Judge era, who have improved dramatically since Worsfold took over.

Hunter- timid, utterly lost youngster -> Tough, incredibly hard at it, 10 mark a game CHB.

Fletcher- Extremely inconsistent, shoddy skilled midfielder -> Perpetual motion, sublimely skilled totally consistent elite midfielder

Embley- A footballing joke. Unfit, no skills, no discipline -> Tough, committed, ultra fit and dedicated player, wears a vice-captains hat now.

Cox - Raw, unfit beanpole -> Top 2 ruckman in the competition. Extremely fit and tough (a trend emerges?)

Glass - Lost, mediocre defender in McIntosh's shadow -> The backbone of our defence.

..and the list goes on for pretty much as long as I want it go on for. The only players I can think of who were good both pre and post Worsfold are Matera, Kerr, Wirrpunda and Cousins, and the latter two have unquestionably taken huge steps since Woosh took over.

Contrast that with Freo, and I can name plenty of guys who started well either at Freo or other clubs but have gone backwards dramatically after even relatively short periods under Connolly. Headland? Polak? Medhurst? It took about 3 weeks for Josh Carr to turn into a shrinking violet.

The quality of a list is always a function of a coaches ability to motivate and maintain discipline- if he's doing his job and people are in good form and working hard to develop, naturally the list looks better in time- if he's not, player fail to live up to their potential.

Connolly has, is and will continue to ******** away an astonishing amount of talent due to his complete and utter inadequacy as a coach. He's smart, he'd make a great assistant but he's just far to weak an individual for the top job.
