Fremantle's list is over rated

I'm not sure the list is over-rated, they are simply not playing to their own potential right now. Actually, they seem to only like playing to their potential once every two or three games this year.

Seems to me like the players have lost faith in the coach, I'm sure they wouldn't all go off the boil if they were playing for a coach they respected. This is only a thought though.

I reckon this is your whole problem at Freo. You've got a side that can win on the road, true, but its come at too big a cost.

Basically, a WA team, given the distance and frequency traveled must win its home games. They provide the core collection of wins you need to get to make it to the finals. Then its a matter of how many away games you win that determines whether its top 4, 6, 8 or wherever. However if you don't win the home games, there's no point in winning the away games.

If you win away you must consolidate that win with a win at home, and that means assuming your opponents are good enough to win if you don't play your best football.

It is clear to me that CC has done an outstanding job building a list when you look at what he started with.

Not at all the fact are irrefutable that WCE squad is 1or 2 years ahead of ours in experience.

Seriously, both clubs were at a nadir at exactly the same time, the end of 2001. Why do you think there's that ongoing battle about which team was the worst in 2001?

As I recall, we were in fact the spoon favourites for 2002 pre-season. Both CC and Woosha were recruited for that season, so the development time and starting point for both clubs is pretty close to identical. The only ground I'd grant you is that our older players were probably a little more talented than yours; but your younger ones were better than ours at the time, and some of our older players are now gone.

The only reason we might have 1 or 2 more years experience is that we've put our younger players on the field and given them game time.

We had to trade to get some experienced leaders a fact that I have already proved that you did not have to. In fact you are still reping indirectly the benifits of WCE's concessions of the early nineties with Banfield on your list and being able to get a 3rd round pick for Morrison.

A third round pick is worth bollocks, and Banfield was a pick in the draft proper, not a concession pick (the fact Sydney were foolish enough to trade us pick 1 for Begovich and Watters is neither here nor there)

You cannot have a whole team of young draft picks.
The only player that CC has traded away of note would be Mcphee.
Make up your mind , one minute CC shows no faith in young players and next minute he does.
Why wasn't Chris Judd left on the ground the whole time in his early years for "development"?

At least Judd was getting game time at AFL level as part of his development. Freo seems scared of even selecting the younger, more inexperienced players. Take the way Murphy's been in and out of the team for instance.

Fremantle's list is mildly over rated. There is some genuine talent there but your player list lacks certain types of players. Certainly you need quicker players. The fact that Connolly doesn't use what he has in the best possible way doesnt help. Connolly made huge mistakes in trading away McPhee, Brown and even Croad, or at the very least it set you back because you are now playing young forwards like Murphy, who has yet to make a real impact and you have to develop a young player all over again.

Appointing Broadbridge as coach would be a huge mistake, for the same reasons that appointing Neesham, Drum and Connolly were huge mistakes: they never had significant careers in the AFL and never reached the pinnacle of an AFL premiership, thereby lacking that experience and the understanding of what is required of their players to reach that level. All the great AFL coaches were at least good AFL players and played in premiership teams. If you can get a coach that fits this criteria, your club may return to the success it hasn't had since the heady days of Gerard Neesham.

I presume you're talking about WCE in 2003.

In that case, we went to PA, got Poleaxed to the nth degree. We copped major injuries to the players that sustained us in the top 2, being:

Kerr was Spear Tackled, out for a few weeks
Embley out for 4-6 weeks - and when he returned was clearly still playing injured.
Gardiner - Knee = GAWN

On top of the injuries, our confidence got hammered and we never recovered for the rest of 03.

Kerr, Embley & Gardiner < Haddrill, M Carr, Walker, McPharlin you reckon?
Right guys, we've got our WCE approved excuse for tanking until we get these guys back

Embley out for 4-6 weeks -and when he returned was clearly still playing injured.

Name me one AFL premiership coach in the last 20 years that was never a part of a premiership team. (Mark Williams doesnt count as he captained premiership teams in the SANFL)

Sorry of course (getting confused with his current team) I meant North Melbourne, not Carlton, who won in... 1975, but he left that year for Sth Melbourne. Still, the Kangaroos sides in the 1970s were very strong and he had a long career, in part in a successful era, even if he didn't play in a premiership team. Neesham, Drum and Connolly did nothing career wise and were never really a part of successful teams. Sorry, but your buddy will never be leading a team to an AFL premiership. Take it to the bank.

As much as I can't stand Neesham I have to disagree, his WAFL career was fairly good both as a player and a Coach.
Whilst my buddy may never get the chance I have no doubt he would do better than any of them that have coached Fremantle thus far. That I would be prepared to bank on.
