The time is getting closer, some may say it is imminent, where the great man Pav decides to relinquish the captaincy.

Some on this board are saying he is not providing the leadership required now. Certainly his age is catching up with him and Pav would be embarrased by some of his efforts this year. The time is near where we let Pav play out the game in peace without the stress/focus of the captaincy.

So who should be the next captain of the club?

Pav - keep him on until he retires

Great servant of the club. Is showing the signs of age and hasn't led from the front all year. He would be embarrassed by some of his efforts this year and deserves to regain form out of the spotlight.

Sandi

Some may say he's the heart and soul of the club at the moment. I am sure when he steps out onto the field with the boys they all feel a bit more confident with 211 there. Does he have the ability to motivate his teammates? Doesn't seem like the greatest communicator

Broughton

From rookie to captain? Bleeds purple. Tough at it. Courageous. A great example for everyone else.

De Boer

Same story as Broughton. Tends to go missing in the game a bit more often than Broughton though.

Fyfe

Future captain no doubt. Only 19, but such is his rapid improvement it might be worth just giving it to him now.

Mundy

Has stepped up again this year. Probably our best midfielder.

Micky B

Rookie to Captain? Commands huge respect, not just from Freo players and staff, but from all supporters (not just Freo supporters). Always seemed to step up when needed last year. 23 years old.

Suban

Tough at it. Leads by example. Reportedly a little quiet.

Ibbo

I put him in here only because he is actually part of our current leadership group believe it or not!!!!

Duffield

Ditto. He's apparently one of our current "leaders".

Lukey Mac

Great servant. Great player. Are we better off going with someone younger though? Going for Lukey Mac could however be seen as an option that would give Fyfe a few more years and allow him to take over in 1-2 years when Lukey Mac is closer to retiring.

Really hard as outsiders to the club you never truly know the qualities of these people.

Also a lot depends on how many season Pav gives us.

At this stage, Fyfe has classy captain written all over him.

I would probably think it may go Barlow to Fyfe, Pav may give it up prior to retiring and concentrate on out f the square marks and goal kicking ;-)

You can lock in one of these boys i reckon - probably DeBoer just in front he does a lot of stuff that we don't see but are extremely important for the team, particularly if it was to happen in the next year or 2
Suban is the next of the rest i reckon

De Boer

Same story as Broughton. Tends to go missing in the game a bit more often than Broughton though.

Interesting and hard to tell from a fan's point of view.

Both Fyfe, Barlow and DeBoer are good public speakers from what I've seen, all of them level headed.

I believe Fyfe will be the next captain but in any regard a new captain won't happen for another 2 seasons. I suspect Pavlich's last season will see him relinquish it at the start of that season.

Probably Fyfe or Deboer in the future but from all reports Pav is an excellent onfield leader and is looked up to by everyone at the club I wouldn't change the captaincy anytime soon; everyone goes through a form slump. He could be carrying an injury too, so harsh on him IMO.

I used to think Suban but now I'd really like to see Fyfe as the captain one day - he'd make an excellent captain and he speaks very well for himself. However, he's probably a bit too young at the moment. I honestly don't know who'd be our next captain straight after Pav if he hands it over sometime soon. Perhaps Sandi or Mundy?

If Barlow can come back & play at a level near what he achieved last year for awhile I have no doubt he will get his chance of Captaining this side. Quality player, inspirational & great speaker........

Fyfe - great player but not captaincy - too quiet

Suban - Without a doubt Captaincy material but needs a few very good years to establish himself in side

Chris Mayne?

Edit: I voted for deBoer but I think any of him, Fyfe, Barlow etc could do it. Not for a year or 2 though probably.

Yeah, Mayne deserves consideration. He's a bit of a general on the field, always chatting, making sure the structures are okay etc.

Fyfe I reckon could get the nod if Pav stays as skipper for at least another year. I can see Fyfe taking over as a 21 yo in 2013.

Barlow is a real chance IMO. If he comes back this year and does well, I wouldn't mind a Barlow(c)/Fyfe(vc) combo.

tough choice, but i went with fyfe, ahead of barlow and deboer/suban. my reasons were:

1. fyfe is going to be an absolute a-grader, where only of the other three barlow will be.

2. im still not sure if barlow will ever get back to his best.

3. for some weird reason i see barlow, deboer and suban slowing more than i see fyfe slowing, i dont know why i feel that, but fyfe seems like more of a natural runner/athlete, who like hird, would still be playing a-grade football in his thirties.

4. i see deboer struggling to keep his spot in the side at times in his career, and definetly towards the end of it. people are already calling for daniel cross's head at 28, because he has slowed down and doesnt have the skills of say an akermanis to keep him going, i see deboer similar in the way their careers will play out.

5. deboer's kamikazee style could limit his career.

6. suban seems to have brain fades of undiscipline, not often, but he does seem prone to the odd snap. little thing i know, but not something a captain should do.

7. fyfe speaks like a doctor, he is probably the most level headed, mature 19 year old i have ever heard talk as a footballer. he is obvioulsy highly intelligent

8. he would certainly have the respect of the playing group, as would the others im sure, but he IS a freak.

I can see pav captaining until his last or second last year, so in 3 years time fyfe will be 22, perfect age i think to make a statement as a club for a young new captain

Agree with this. I voted Fyfe but it won't happen until season 2013.

Cheers KPR, you saved me having to write anything. My thoughts absolutely down to a T. :thumbsu:

Matthew de Boer, is just like Nick Maxwell, is not the best player but always puts his body on the line and gives 110%, just the sort of stuff we need to spread through our list

Suban or DeBoer. Two guys that put in 100% effort and their hearts on the line.

Ie: Maxwell/Newman.

Voted Fyfe but would love to see Barlow, maybe Mundy, as a transitional captain taking the pressure off Pav for his last year or two.

I can't really see Pavlich letting go off the captaincy. If anyone is Fremantle FC, it's Pav. On field, he's got a lot of experience. He's verbally strong and inspiring. Once he hits some form, he'll again be the perfect captain. Also, the club see him as a great marketer, an intellectual speaker, amongst other things.

But this thread is about the next Dockers captain. Like many others, for me, Nathan Fyfe is total captain material. However, our 22 are obviously young, and relatively inexperienced. If Pavlich were to resign captaincy tomorrow, I see only two options: Luke McPharlin, and David Mundy. Both have been at the club a fair time. Each of them have been integral parts of previous Freo sides. They've got (admittedly, unfortunately limited) finals experience. Perhaps Mundy is a slightly better choice. Luke sometimes lacks that mongrel instinct (think a tough De Boer tackle, rather than a Milne out-of-court settlement).

But yeah, the future's Fyfe.

At this stage, Fyfe has classy captain written all over him.

As a club we've always had class, it's G&D we've always lacked.

Come on down Matty DeBoer. A more limited player than Fyfe obviously, but I could see him becoming a revered captain in the mould of Brett Kirk.

When the games on the line in the last qtr you can count on Captain DeBoer to put his head down in a kamikaze attack on the ball to lift his troops. It's exactly what we're lacking at the moment.

But really, Fyfe's probably a monty if Pav doesn't give it up for a few years.

It's gotta be De Boer. The guy is courageous, hard at it, and plays through his limitations. I agree with the 'he's like Maxwell' sentiment. Sometimes the captain doesn't have to be the superstar of the playing group, just the guy who works chard and commands respect.

These days it seems like the playing group choose the captain so it would be very interesting to see who they would vote for.

For all those harping on about Deboers hardness, I agree it's fantastic to watch, let's all stop and think about a bloke playing on ball with a dislocated shoulder for the better part of a month.

Try and fathom the pain threshold of the man and mental toughness attributed with such an act.

For me it's out of Barlow, Fyfe and Deboer.

as gordongecko mentioned, people talk about deboers toughness which is all true, but ive never seen fyfe shirk any issues, he is every bit as tough as matty D... he may not lay bone crunching tackles and bumps, but he will always do what needs to be done
