From a Neutral - The umpiring was AWFUL!

From a neutral's perspective, I thought collingwood were terribly hard done by by the umps today. particularly the thrid quater. Well deserved win in terrible conditions with terrible umpiring.
well the umpiring started off badly then tapered off in the middle then the less said about the end the better

At the start of the match, when it was 11-3 frees in Saints favour, I wasn't too annoyed at the umps, because from what I could see they were all fair enough decisions... but it went downhill from there.

Goldsack's free against (and the subsequent 50) was the worst decision I've seen this year. I can't figure out what it was supposed to be for. It shouldn't have been a free to ANYONE, but if it had to be, surely it should have been his free? His eyes never left the ball, which was coming directly to him... I may be remembering it incorrectly (it's 6.15am - yet to sleep) but if they had a head-to-head collision like I remember, surely that means the Saints guy didn't have his eyes on the ball, so it HAD to be Goldsack's free? But like I said, maybe that's tiredness, and Goldsack ran into his back or something. I definately have to see it again.

Either way, to those saying it was the worst umpiring they've seen all year... can you honestly say it was worse than in the Queen's b-day clash this year? That was the worst umpiring I've seen ever - not just for Collingwood, but for Melbourne too. Just atrocious from start to end, and I've never been more angry at the refs.

Of all the rounds the umpires decided to over adjudicate with soft free kicks - it was heritage round in wet weather. Quite ironic really.

Don't be ridiculous! They were putting on a magnificent whistle-blowing exhibition and kept getting interrupted by so-called "players" trying to play so called "football". McLaren jumped out to an early lead, Chamberlain made a run in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to get in front, some NoName tried to get into the action (who does he think he is? This is Scott Fing McLaren!) but then McLaren took it home in the last term like the true hero that he is.

chamberlain has complained to the geisch. he wants dale thomas dropped and sent to the bush for repeatedly drawing attention to himself. it was an incredibly frustrating day for ray, no matter what he did to make sure everyone was watching him - bloody thomas kept on trying to outdo him. i still think ray got there in the end, though.

I hate umpires.....I hate referees....there is a certain mentality these jerks have to want to be an official instead of a player. Its like they are the kids that got their lunch money stolen in primary school and they spend the rest of their life getting back at the jocks who did it.

so true.

Nothing is worse than an umpire with a little bit of media. Goldspinks is a disgrace to humanity.....clearly tries to get under players skins (he brags about it to other umpires.....I know a goalie who reckons he's ******** too)......Unfortunately for us today.....Chamberlain is starting to get a little media. I know he was interviewed on Triple M today, not sure what about or what for, but I imagine is was about the Harley incident last week. Irrespective, I changed the channel, ain't listening to these fools getting exposure.

correct again. some of these clowns really believe they are central to the show. looks like a new one has been born. ray chamberlain.

Anyways, the point of my rant.....this DH Chamberlain loved the exposure and umpired like he was the one we all came to see. Should be dropped for such a pathetic performance.

the best thing the afl could do is appoint an umpire's boss who will front up and be realistic about the umpire's performances. someone who'll answer questions honestly and admit when an umpire is being a ********. right now, they are so paranoid about criticism that they just create an image of being a protected species who can get away with anything.

does anyone really believe that ray chamberlain will be dropped for that performance ? not a chance. he's a celebrity now.

which of course will just reinforce to this pathetic little **** that he's right and everyone else is wrong. how do you build a culture of performance and improvement like that. there's no way they will even come out admit that there were any errors.

The hand in the back ruling against Leon, Cloke and Maxwell (maybe Did's also) were terrible and resulted in three non-shots on goal. Blatant pushing in the back by Gehrig resulted in the goal....Gehrig holding Wakelin in a good tussle (play- on) resulted in a goal......The Goldsack decision was perhaps as bad a decision as made ever....why penalise a guy running at the footy. Disgusting effort by the canary yellow maggots.

if one of the problems is a new rule that was rushed in and is causing frustration all round, then be transparent about it. admit it. front up and admit what everybody knows. "we were wrong". it's not that hard. the NRL have dropped a new rule mid-season because it didn't work. no big drama, just a sensible, well understood decision.

i thot it was okay:thumbsu: some werent so good like that one the guy ran into when both were going for the mark and than to follow up with a 50m, but u gotta remember that they can be wrong sometimes, ump make mistakes just as ppl do

I was watching the game and i would have to say it was the worst display of umpiring for the year.. If those clowns get another game especially scott bloody mcclaren what a joke of an umpire!

As for the boundary umpire.. why call dales goal out of bounds from 45 metres away? wtf

Well done pies for getting a win out of that game could of been a loss showed some real fight!

One thing - as far as I can remember the umpiring in finals is pretty good, I don't remember many complaints. I hope that's right, I might have just forgotten.

YOu can sort of handle it in the h&a like fickle weather or something, but for a final and esp a grandie to be swung by the umpires would be awful.

Actually I do remember a grandie in the 70's when I was a kid - Geelong Richmond I think - that was changed by bad umpiring - I think maybe Geelong were way on top then got about 4 or 5 really bad decisions against them, resulting in Richmond goals who got a sniff and then took over and won. But that was a long time ago, doesn't mean much now. It annoyed me even though I didn't really care who won.

it was over umpired.

The tennis commentator made a good point last night, congratulating the Womens final umpire.

"You know they've done a good job when you dont notice them".

Yesterday they were the centre of attention.
