I didn't like him but Demetriou would've just said "the first round of the draft will be pure" in 2026 and made the call.
Clubs will kick up a stink for not much notice, but this will they or won't they stuff is even worse for teams planning.
Obviously I'd rather we get more notice to be able to plan for next year, but make a decision FFS.

The timing to get screwed by the rule through our build and this change right when we have two F/S would hurt
It'd hurt, but there's Jack Pickett and Will Malady in next years draft who are a similar height and were pretty impressive for Vic Country as underage players this year. Lewis Houndsome another kid who is 199cm.
So worst case we either draft Aidan with our R1 or take one of the other key forwards.

So we should probably try to hide Harris and McCartney next year. Let them drop to the 2nd round. It won't be too far to drop if the draft isn't compromised.
No doubt that teams will start doing this. Promise to take the kid and tell him not to play that well.
But you'd think recruiters would know them well enough from u16 and u17's footy.

The loss is really that we can't trade our pick for a player, in advance. We could have potentially gotten McCartney, another top 10 pick and Harris. Or traded the pick for a player and still gotten McCartney and Harris.

Sure but also depends where they are ranked and how many points you need as to whether you can do that jumble.

Not to worried eitger way with what I believe think are 8 AA quality mids plus add wind hager and craig starcevich and maybe Wilkie and the extra wins from our losses from under 39.5 points

Its about time the AFL did this. Its been a deadset joke for an “equalisation” argument. Every year we finished on the bottom we didn’t have access to the best talent available and our best FS are in an academy and dont choose us.

Im not sure using the exact pick for the kid is where it will end up. However maybe within 5. Pick 1 - need pick 1-5 to draft them. I think that works and thats fair. It doesn’t help us now, TBH it doesn’t matter. Its ******ed.

McCartney is choosing Sydney. Live in reality and Harris isnt going in the first round.

What will be interesting is the entitlement (for lack of a better word) that clubs and players affected by this will feel. Will the cellar dwellers who are now free to pick the Darcys and Ashcrofts of the world have to fight off their 'rightful' clubs from day one? Will they be worried about them all being potential JHFs who are destined for their father's club one way or another? Cody Walker will be the first case subject, I guess.

This is the issue, the AFL think they're making the draft purer and evening it up for clubs down the bottom of the ladder. All it's going to do is mean that Father Sons will request trades once their initial contract is up. Nothing more certain.

And unless they extend the draftee contracts beyond 3 years, it's probably 1.5 in the moagoos and you get 18 months out of a kid only to see them go to where they should have gone in the first place.

The only funny thing about this is St Kilda kicking up the biggest stink about it will probably see St Nick's kids playing in oppo colours by the time this all shakes out.
