The whole point of free agency is that you can throw money at a player and not have to part with players/picks like we did for Trent Croad. Collingwood know that they're paying overs in $ for Mayne, but the fact they parted with nothing to get him makes it a good deal in their opinion.

If a team wants to have a fair dinkum crack at Fyfe they'll have back loaded other deals so they can front load a deal for Fyfe which we'll struggle to match.

If Freo match the deal he is a contracted Freo player. If you go restricted you know that you stay at the club if they match the terms. There is no sign and end up in the draft option. It is accept a deal and that club or your current club.

As long as there is an offer in front of him as soon as another club offers him a deal we can match.

That's not how it works. A free agent isn't forced to stay if the club matches the bid.
