We know your love of Mannagh, it’s rare for you to make a post not demanding his inclusion, but that’s a hyperbolic claim at best.

We got beat up around the ball last night and adding a small forward would have changed FA. The delusion that probably the smallest player on our list would help fix that is laughable.
I’m not against him getting a game, but what he brings to the team ain’t going to fix our problems.

We are small and lack creativity and power in the guts. Clohesy (small but a competitive animal) and Stevens aren’t silver bullets but are probably the best options to help address those concerns.

Also if Stengle leaves, he won’t be going anywhere unless there is a godfather offer IMO. He’s next cab off the rank. He would know that.
I think Mannagh absolutely has the ability to add creativity in midfield. He has the explosiveness and side step that our current brigade lack.

About where I thought we’d be pre season. Scraping to make the 8 but thought we’d be playing more youngsters for this outcome. Time to do it. We’re well and truly done this season. Just rip the band aid now. Reward the guys performing in the vfl.
Agree, we are so early in our team development. Other teams who are contending are way ahead. And that’s fine, it’s the cycle of the life of a football team.

Anyone who wants us to win year after year is delusional or just plain greedy.

Prefer us to persist with Conway/Edwards as ruckmen, leave SDK down back.
Either way something really needs to be done about SDK a good sports psychologist and leadership around him to stop this bad habit of his mental defeats and dropping his head all the time with his timid nature

I agree about 2E. My criticism all year has nothing to do with his attitude. And I do recognise that when he is in the contest he is still pretty strong. As you would expect from an experienced good player. He also does do the running when you look at tracker.

But he just can’t do the right running defensively. Wants to but can’t (any of us who have played any social sport and got old knows this feeling…you think you are in the right spot and you are not)

if it was just 2E then maybe you can cover but when you have 2E, Hawkins, Duncan, Rohan (even though fast in contests he doesn’t cover the ground consistently), blitz who are all just that split second off - adding to Jezza and Henry who don’t really defend - that is a third of the team creating small gaps for good opposition to slice through. The rest just can’t cover.

We are going to have to make those hard calls to improve our full field defence (but THEN we lose offensive experience and of course get slighter bodies so it will take time)

The things I like about Tuohy is his kicking and safe hands. He is a beautiful long kick, rarely coming out of HB does OBF, he still has ability to curl it long and inwards while being ran down. He also has safe hands, strong, so offensively he still cuts it. When he gets it that is, and defensively that's the problem, he's nowhere within cooee to pressure or mark. . Fast hands like the Blues had, made them all look slow.

I don’t think tuohy was unwilling to chase, he was simply unable. Physically done.

He had some mates in that regard in the last qtr.

It is what happens when you rely on players who are past their prime, or players who are not yet in their prime. Our team is a bit bipolar, we need to accept that.
Im not sure he was unable. If you watch it again he actually stops running and leaves it all up to SDK.

A few minutes later he blasted a team mate for not covering his man as well.

Career ending injury is nothing to be happy about
Disgusting comment
Let’s not be too melodramatic.

I don’t see the poster revelling in the potentially career ending injury to Hawkins.

It was hard for the MC to drop Hawkins as they nursed him to 800. It kept Neale from playing a proper position, which would allow him to actually get used to the way the team plays.

Hawkins injury is simply the outcome of older players playing too long. We’ve seen it all before.

It is what it is. We all still love what Hawkins was and is for the footy team, but it really does allow the MC to transition the team to where it will be in future.

From what I see I agree. I suppose what we don’t know is whether he has the tank (they haven’t played him there in VFL) nor the MF craft? I can see why they haven’t entertained it whilst we have Bruhn and Clark (we just can’t have 3 MF migits in modern AFL, actually 4 if you count Atkins)…but with Bruhn gone I would look at getting Clark more time in VFL to build his confidence (dominate like he has but focus on disposals) and give Mannagh a go as our small MF.

I just don’t think they will! I can see them think about him as a sub.

We could go “small ball” next week in the forward line by having Rohan replace Hawkins (tough on Neale) and in that case Mannagh should be seriously considered as a sub if not in 22

Adding someone that can hit a target going inside 50 would help a lot. Did you not watch the game last night?

Now admittedly our forwards refusal to lead at the ball carrier doesnt help but we are atrocious at delivering the ball to a forwards advantage and mannagh is good at that and therefore should be playing. Its quite obvious.

We got bashed up at clearances all over the ground and yes our skills under pressure were garbage but a player who has spent 90% of his time as a small forward this year ain’t going to fix shit. Unless you drop a forward I can’t see what he can add. The only forward who looked threatening last night was Jezza and we still kicked 75 points.

Should he be playing more as mid? Probably, but let’s see what he can do in that position in the VFL before thinking he can do it at a higher level.

Our problems stem from moving chess pieces around to cover gaps that haven’t been there much is past seasons. Chris Scott basically referenced this is his press conference.

In an ideal world - with good availability- and blokes in reasonable form - we’d look a lot different. Danger and Guthries absence has not only exposed young kids (who aren’t ready) but has also lead to positional changes flowing through the ground set up.

— Blicavs played AA quality football in defence not that long ago (and won a B&F). If he’s lost a yard, and his kicking efficiency is hurting us, then push him down back. They can’t though because we’re thin in the middle.

— If Blicavs could go back (and take spells in ruck) it would free up SDK. He showed enough last night to suggest more time on ball learning the craft. He was rated as an elite midfielder in junior years before a growth spurt at 17. But see Conway comments below - that’s what they need to do.

— Bowes ideal spot is half back. Good skills and a perfect Duncan replacement (with short stints in the middle). If they make a hard call on Duncan it helps us develop the future. Every game Duncan plays is wasted development of Bowes in that position.

— We’ll run Danger into the ground playing too many midfield minutes. At this stage of his career he should be 50/50 midfield/ forward. He’s a 50 goal a year forward once Hawkins hangs em up and that’s from people inside the club. But again, we’re thin in the middle so we have no choice.

— And as for Conway. Seriously they need to unwrap the cotton wool and just play him. If he breaks down then so be it. It’s now or never - blokes like English and Marshall just got thrown the keys. We need to do the same with Toby.

— Sometimes tough calls are needed. Respect what some of these blokes have given the club but don’t sacrifice the long term for treading on egg shells now. Duncan is done - watch how many times he just goes to ground. Hawkins is done - what a player and team mate he’s been. But he’s done. Stanley - enough said. Tuohy was a great get for the club - but he’s cooked (mentally and physically).

This was always a situation we knew was coming and it would hit hard. Hard calls now (and in trade period) will determine if we can be thereabouts next season and beyond.

If we jag Bailey Smith - or an experienced mid chasing coin (we’ll have cap space) then we me might just hang in there.

End of rant

It was always going to come to an end and last night confirmed it, but the meek surrender is the huge concern for me. There was no fight when the game was on the line, in fact the white flag was raised pretty clearly and that's something I never associate with Geelong sides.

It's not just the older guys, but the regression from the tier below. The leadership of Selwood is sorely missed, and I don't blame Danger, who tried his best to lead by example. But you can't replace that Selwood aura and presence.

We're also well and truly feeling the effects of those drafts where we gave up picks for senior players. It was a trade off that paid the ultimate reward, but eventually it bites you.

Would love to be a fly on the wall in some list management meetings from now to the end of the year because there's some crucial decisions to be made as to what direction we take going forward.

Was the most sensible “rant” I have seen on BF. If you think this is a rant - you need to do better

Go back and watch him when he was caught htb in front of Carlton’s goal in the last qtr.

He was physically spent. Just couldn’t physically go any further.

The resounding problem for all the old players, is trying to take a step too far. No longer able to get away with it, trying to overachieve-perfect example then with Tuohy.

So we have this shocking see saw of not putting boot to ball fast enough, or moving it so fast they ignore good leads. I'm concerned with the inability to spot up players that are clearly free, and this happens frequently, not just last night. Is it panic? Get the bloody vids going after the game to point it out. We no longer have a Hawk who will get to the spot, so look elsewhere.

SDK beaten in the ruck, but that sibling rivalry brought out some aggression in him. I feel like being beaten by his brother woke him up.

He takes that level of physicality back to d50 and I think he's back
Great call. I suspect the MC knew exactly what would happen. For the first time in a long - I feel like SDK did not bow his head. He got mad and honestly, his brother needs to be thanked for going hard on him.

And I loved how they interacted in the end. Beautiful relationship. SDK is lucky that he has TDK to lean on and to talk to. TDK used to be a bit of a nothing forward and ruck and he figured it out. And SDK is literally a physical clone of his older brother. Once he figures out the mental stuff - he will become his own version of TDK and start dominating whatever position he plays.

And TDK didn't have a premiership medal in the family trophy cabinet at 21.
Or his face smashed in.

In 2E defence the Carlton player finger slightly touched the ball during the ball drop and this caused it to miss his foot.. I'd say very unlucky
