Can someone please explain to me how the ruck contests were umpired last night?

Apparently you are allowed to tackle your opponent and throw them out of the way, shepherd them from the ball drop and give 2 hand shoves in the back. The way the umps were allowing tdk (and to a lesser extent Cripps) manhandle SDK gave him absolutely no chance.

In general I have almost given up trying to figure out how our game is umpired.

Handball vs throw?
Htb? Prior opportunity, no legit attempt to dispose?
Chopping arms vs legit contest?
Ruck contests?
7m kicks that are sometimes marks, sometimes play on?
Dangerous tackles?
50m penalties? Sometimes yes, sometimes no?

I could go on and on.

I legit have no idea

No excuse, as we were soundly thrashed, but this is happening every week, every game. It appears they've decided they like soccer, and want uninterrupted flow. Umpires better increase their fitness levels.

It's a new game, an unfair game to the one we knew, and will be advantageous to teams that are fast and adapt to basic cheating.

Disagree and by all accounts of what I watched Tom Dek wasn’t BOG
Cripps was, but I can’t understand they go hand in hand

It is no different from a midfielder getting 25 touches but their opponent gets 35 and 3 goals. The other team got a big benefit from the match up, no different for 15 vs 25 and 3. 2nd place in tug of war counts for very little, no matter how much pulling you did.

We’ve got the perfect mix of inexperience youth, battlers with no top gear, cooked older players with nothing left in the tank and a bunch of others who’ve been beaten to a bloody pulp in the confidence stakes in the last 8 weeks.
And a game plan that has been ‘unpicked’ by the opponents…

Couldn’t disagree more, that game you compare as a midfielder doesn’t even get close to a tight battle in the ruck, which done people view as a heavy defeat and many others view as a loss, but one that wasn’t as bad as your making it out to be

Had my fill of venting, nothing to like tonight, waiting on scoots presser. The absolute best thing that happened in 3 hours-all the Carlton players KISSING Abbey after interviews. Suck on that pc gender madness.
Started with the handshakes, now the kissing. Interesting to see what comes next?

So Rohan. I have mixed.

He comes on and has impact. Playing on wing. 6 possessions for 3rd qtr including intercept goal

Using speed to get 4 uncontested marks. 1 turnover and 2 score involvements

Maybe it is the benefit of being a sub as burst player as you are fresher? Even played on wing.

But then in 4th qtr gets no possessions. And don’t remember any crashing packs or real pressure.

Then compare him to Dempsey who had 7 possessions in Both qtrs and 5 score involvements and decent pressure. After running the first half.

Although then compare to 2E who had 3 possessions each of 3rd and 4th. At 50% efficiency and 1 score involvement. He played 90% game time which amazes me.

So I would have Rohan ahead of 2E any day but starting to wonder whether I would have either.
Rohan is potentially alright as an impact sub but he doesnt fit in the 22 at all.

That said with hawkins out he might play a bit.

Tuohy is cooked.

Seemed to be the type of guy in 22 that wanted to prove himself; hasn’t been like that since, but if last night doesn't tell him that he’s got work to do than nothing will. Surely pushed around physically by your brother, only one year older, has gotta spur on weights and one on one skill sessions. Surely pushed to look at where he is at now and where he wants to get to. Positivity in me and faith in this club’s culture over years says that last night should be great for him - probably needed it in many ways
Does he have the tools to be a long term ruckman?
I note his brother has been a spare parts sort of player until this season where his ruck work has gone up a level

I mean mannagh would certainly do that for obvious reasons, you hope knevitt etc dont.

I agree that last year i felt we waited until too late in the year to drop vets and i worry we are repeating the same mistake this year.

I’m struggling to see the point in recruiting Mannagh.

He’s 27 this year. So it’s not like he’s ’the future’ like the other people being kept out of the side in the VFL. You bring someone of that age in to play, not to run around kick in goals in the VFL

LOL. Apparently Abbey is a very warm person, known to hug the players in her dealings with them off screen (no shade intended) so basically she is a hugger. So they were horrified when Neale was media called out, by certain radical sections, after the Brisbane game for the kiss/hug.
Looks like the Blues boys were backing her. Very funny. I remember Danger's face after the GF interview Abbey hug, like a chuffed school boy. Good on her, the grating gushing ones could take a lesson from Abbey.

Why would they request trades? 4 of your 5 are likely in the Rd 1 team next year. The other will get delisted and won't be picked up elsewhere

Because mannagh is 26 and cant wait and a number of contending teams will take him. Hes a monty to get a trade.

Knevitt and clohesy i hope would stay but you never know.

Been almost insulting picking him up and not giving him games. Particularly when so many are out of form. God knows we need some spark and leg speed too.

It kinda reminds me of Bruhn getting votes when his direct opponent doubles his disposal count.

Bews is an interesting one. Clearly our best lock down small defender and every week the opponent's small fowards kick a bag

Bews body cant go anymore.
Ditto hawkins stanley duncan and tuohy.

Atkins having 42 pressure acts only brings to mind Fred’s old line about pressure acts being the measure of players who can’t do anything else. He had two touches at quarter time - a handball and the free kick he got from being whacked after the handball. Tbf two more than MOC and Mullins.
Our mids are cursed with having an historically poor ruck setup. I remember Sandilands for Freo. So dominant. And I remember Nat Fyfe's golden years. And Fyfe's drop-off form straight after Sandilands retired.
Goggin would not let a rover come in for him when Farmer was playing. He guarded his position with Farmer jealously. Well known. Mids are heavily dependant on their rucks. We need to acknowledge our mids are always at a disadvantage.
When is the last time you saw Atkins et al get an easy ball and clearance from good ruckwork?

Theres clearly a disconnect between the coaches and the list management team who recruited mannagh. And it will annoy me when hes kicking goals for someone like carlton or essendon or port next year.

Yes Mullin is young and raw.. And yes his played a couple of OK games.
BUT how has he deserved his chances to play AFL in front of many players who are ahead of him eg Knevitt, Hardie Clohesy Humphries etc etc. And we can't say his a defender and them guys except for Humphries is a defender. He looks lost out there and we are playing like a man short when his there! He needs to play all year in the VFL to still understand the game
Because the MC points the fickle finger of fate at a particular player. And then they must show faith. And there's the reluctance to admit a mistake.

Re SDK: What did we actually expect? really harsh on a kid thrown into the ruck, a position he has only dabbled in. Not helped by a shite midfield. And this rubbish about him dropping his head, not everyone has a bullet face expression like Max Gawn. The kid's personality is low key, doesn't mean he's not trying, or he wouldn't even reach AFL level. Did his best.

This is a good observation.

The pre-season reports were that we were working on the running capacity sprint sessions and fewer sessions over all so that we could play a back half rebound and effectively flood back and Joe the goose everyone on the rebound. Was apparently a Rahilly brain child I think.

Makes sense we'd be struggling to move away from that model if that's what we did all pre-season
Good Lord, that just about made throw up my breakfast. Fitness, yeah. But if ever aside need to learn to NOT fumble, to be a good enough kick to kick it to a TEAMMATE, instead of spraying it elsewhere, etc, its Geelong. Our basic skills under pressure are atrocious. Take Tyson Stengle out and we are pathetic in this most important factor.

Our running patterns vs our ball skills is like that joke about a dog who chases a car.
