So, we’ve seen what we’ve been working on all preseason, precision kicking out of defence, which is code for slow ball movement.

The better sides are running, overlapping with handball, at one stage the Bulldogs doubled our handballs, whilst we dominated kicking.

When we move the ball quickly, we put the opposition defence under pressure, we don’t give them time to set up.

So the posters who defending this during preseason, what say yee?

2024 all over again.
Smart people learn from their mistakes... whilst dumb arses never do.

We can't afford to waste our premiership window with our lowest ever IQ coach. Yes, even Shaw had better ideas... just.

Will say it again. All started from the Geelong game last year where we lost because ROB dropped an all time stinker rather than us being too aggressive. Many loved the scrappy GWS win the week after but I knew Nicks already applied the handbrake. We had some good wins against the Bulldogs, Port, Gold Coast and Hawthorn but it was more because of our physicality which caught a few offguard and forward efficiency.

Surely we all want to play Brisbane’s precision kicking game. If it works for them, it’ll work for us. You only had to watch a few minutes of probables v possibles to know that we’re on the right track.

Stop wetting the bed everyone, the melts are glorious.

Where's the sarcasm font when U need it😃

The short kicking gameplan was clearly designed for having Cook off half back which is where he played all pre-season along with Keane and maybe even Nankervis

But when Curtin got injured, forcing Cook to the wing, and Keane got injured, bringing in Butts, we somehow ALSO decided to bring in Bond and then Jones even though we had choices like Nankervis in the reserves

Seems self inflicted to me. One thing goes wrong, can't select the best 22, so then we stack the defense with lockdown grunts with mediocre disposal?

That might work against a horrible forward line like Collingwood for a quarter or two, but not most sides

Nicks has been scared away from both quick long kicks into the forward line and running handball by our finals experience in 2025. They either resulted in rushed kicks to a defensive wall or handballing directly into the defensive wall. We stemmed the bleeding by chipping to and then over the wall but was never a realistic chance of winning either final. Having said that I think the better teams do move the ball with run and handball so we need to see how those teams make it work. Could potentially take 2 years from when we get a good coach with quality experience in Melbourne.

We’re playing pretty much the expected defensive group. And Keane isn’t a precision kick, he’d be just as bad in this game plan as Butts. He’d be quicker, but he’d be missing targets all over the place.

Cook was never getting a game ahead of Laird, Max, Bond or Milera. Just because he trained back there doesn’t mean that the pecking order changed.

Ideally, you'd like the slow, precise ball movement to be a lever we can pull when needed. Game is getting out of hand, momentum seems to be against us, the opposition has a run on.... pull the lever, and go into defensive mode. Frustrate the opposition, keep possession for a while, and force them to defend. Take the heat out of the game for a while, then get back to attacking.

Instead, it appears to be our Plan A, and then we (eventually) switch to attacking when it fails. It's not fun to watch, and at least so far, doesn't seem particularly effective.

This is a topic I’d love to see a lot of in depth discussion on. But all I see is criticism on our methods without a single suggestion of what needs to change. Claiming “We need to go fast” is not a game plan, nor an insightful adjustment to the current game plan.

Now unless you can create a turnover in a position on the ground where you can catch the opposition massively offside, (ie. one of the opposition defenders makes a horrible mistake with little to no protection behind them, which is very rare) every single one of the 18 sides attempts to move the ball up field with structure in place to not get opened up if and when a turnover occurs.

Our defensive unit and system is clearly very good at creating turnover and intercepting, whether that’s in the air or on the ground.

So let’s hear some suggestions. What do you want to see in the following defensive circumstances:
Kick in from behind?
Stoppage in defensive 50?
Intercept mark or free kick 0-20 metres from our goal?
Win ground ball 0-20 metres from our goal?
Intercept mark or free kick in either defensive pocket 20-45 metres from goal?
Win ground ball in either defensive pocket 20-45 metres from goal?
Intercept mark or free kick in the corridor 20-45 metres from goal?
Win ground ball in the corridor 20-45 metres from goal?
Intercept mark or free kick between half back flank and wing?
Win ground ball between half back flank and wing?
Intercept mark or free kick at centre half back?
Win ground ball at centre half back?

Extra points for graphics and still shots highlighting what we have currently been typically doing and where the changes need to occur.

I think our ball movement out of centre bounce has been very good this season and don’t think too many would be critical in this space. Especially with some of the ruck work McAndrew has delivered allowing our midfielders to get out the front of the stoppage.

So where do our problems lie ?? And what needs to change ?? Do we have a problem with our structures forward of the ball when we create the turn over and win the footy back ?? Are our wingers or high half forwards too aggressive/defensive ?? Personnel issues ??

What say yee ???

What the hell? I didn’t read one “sack Nicks” in that response. Not One! and I read it twice. I have grave concerns about your commitment to our club

Overlap run with handball, just like the other teams are doing and did in the finals, pretty sure I posted that.

You also said that’s what “better sides” are doing without saying who these better sides are and against who, because I think that’s relevant. Was it Giants when they Beat Hawks? Was it Collingwood when they beat Saints? Or is it Doggies who beat Brisbane in Brisbane? Was it Sydney who also beat Brisbane? Must be the Suns you are referring to and if so, they have done a bloody good job thus far, but they also have a bloody good squad.

All the time ?? Yeah, that won’t end badly.
How about we reverse the amounts, 3/4 of run and overlap and 1 qtr of shit chip chip chip.

I don't even buy that we don't have the cattle to pull of the overlap run, handball and kick game. Michallaney/Cook/Cumming/Milera/Dawson just to name a few can all pull this game plan off. Rash and Rankine can both play this way through the midfield with their speed and skills in transition too. Nicks just doesn't position them in a manner to do so.
