Gardiner may miss two

West Coast Eagles ruckman Michael Gardiner’s knee injury is likely to keep him out of the next two matches – against Hawthorn and St Kilda.

Gardiner has a slightly strained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

He was replaced in the first minute of the third quarter against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night.

When West Coast coach John Worsfold was asked what was the most disappointing aspect of the 64-point loss to Port, he said: “Probably the injury to Michael Gardiner. He’s got a slightly strained posterior cruciate ligament. That’s a couple of weeks – hopefully only one but probably two.

“Other than that, I think we’re pretty good. (Ben) Cousins should be all right. I think he just cramped up late.”

West Coast had three other players carrying sore spots – Rowan Jones and Trent Carroll, who copped heavy knocks, and Chad Fletcher, who had a bruised buttock.

Ashley McIntosh’s seven goals for Claremont on Saturday, after his recovery from a hamstring injury, will ensure he returns against Hawthorn at Subiaco on Friday night, and Daniel Chick (shoulder) and Chad Morrison (knee) may well be available, too.

“McIntosh was ready this week but we didn’t feel he was ready to come back in and start playing,” Worsfold said. “He’ll be ready to go next week and we’ll see how we go at selection.”

Giant West Perth ruckman Mark Seaby, 19, is getting closer to his AFL debut, perhaps as Gardiner’s replacement against the Hawks.

“Seaby’s a possibility,” Worsfold said. “He’s playing well (in the WAFL).”

****.

The only silver lining I can see is that wins against a depleted Hawthorn at Subi and St Kilda are both doable without Gardiner, the big issue is that he simply must be fit and in form by the business end of the year- if he isn't then we can effectively kiss any hopes of finals glory goodbye.

It looks as though Seabs will finally get his opportunity. Time for him to stand up and be counted, and time for the whole team to show some character.

Make no mistake, the loss of Gardiner will be the worst thing to come out of the match. I wonder if Seaby will get to make his debut...

well thas definetaly not we wanna see. give him the rest either way, because I reckon these are two teams we can do without him, and still beat them comfortably.

I really hope they give Seaby a chance....

Probably the only good news out of this is the timing. We have Hawthorn (no Everitt) and St Kilda (no one above 6'2") in the next 2 weeks, so this has to be the best chance to give Seaby a taste of AFL. The kid has proved enough in the WAFL, let's see him try it out on the big stage (with the safety net of Cox).

On one of those morning Footy shows, Dr Peter Larkin said that injury is more likely to be a 4-6 week thing....:(

Not good at all. I think we are still good enough to win without him but the quicker he returns the better. A fit and firing Gardiner goes a long way to a premiership.

Was a turning point for the Eagles on the year, we got beaten badly, Jones, Carroll, Gardy, Cuz and Fletch all have injury concerns.

Big game now next week. We need to steady against the Hawks and continue to press for a top two finish.

Ahh Fiddlesticks :D

I'm trying to look at this positively:

- It has happened before the finals which is good
- He will miss games against weaker sides (Hawthorn, Geelong)
- It may give Mark Seaby a chance to make his AFL debut.

Can't blame Gardiner for the loss on Saturday either - it was our midfield who lost the game for us.
