West Coast Eagles ruckman Michael Gardiner’s knee injury is likely to keep him out of the next two matches – against Hawthorn and St Kilda.
Gardiner has a slightly strained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
He was replaced in the first minute of the third quarter against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night.
When West Coast coach John Worsfold was asked what was the most disappointing aspect of the 64-point loss to Port, he said: “Probably the injury to Michael Gardiner. He’s got a slightly strained posterior cruciate ligament. That’s a couple of weeks – hopefully only one but probably two.
“Other than that, I think we’re pretty good. (Ben) Cousins should be all right. I think he just cramped up late.”
West Coast had three other players carrying sore spots – Rowan Jones and Trent Carroll, who copped heavy knocks, and Chad Fletcher, who had a bruised buttock.
Ashley McIntosh’s seven goals for Claremont on Saturday, after his recovery from a hamstring injury, will ensure he returns against Hawthorn at Subiaco on Friday night, and Daniel Chick (shoulder) and Chad Morrison (knee) may well be available, too.
“McIntosh was ready this week but we didn’t feel he was ready to come back in and start playing,” Worsfold said. “He’ll be ready to go next week and we’ll see how we go at selection.”
Giant West Perth ruckman Mark Seaby, 19, is getting closer to his AFL debut, perhaps as Gardiner’s replacement against the Hawks.
“Seaby’s a possibility,” Worsfold said. “He’s playing well (in the WAFL).”
