The club colours will be red, gold and blue, which Mr Witheriff said was an easy decision. "Once we listened to what people said, the first thought was Gold Coast and the next thought was beach culture," he said. "They were the two messages that resonated very clearly at us.

Now, I couldn't care less what colours the Gold Coast choose to wear, but does anyone find it a hypocrisy that Port Adelaide weren't allowed to wear Black & White as that was Collingwood's colours but GCFC are allowed to wear ours?

I'm glad this was brought up because their mascot looks like a gay crows fan in a speedo.

As you said Port were unable to wear the black and white......

Very hypocritical by the AFL, as usual.

When the AFC entered the AFL Fitzroy were also wearing red, blue & gold. The jumpers were completely different in design and there was no conflict.

North & Geelong share blue & white - one vertically striped, the other horizontal hoops.

Colours aren't necessarily a problem if there's no clash in the jumper design.

The reason Port got shafted is because both Magpie variants wear vertically striped black & white outfits, with the major difference being the width of the striped. Port's SANFL outfit was always going to clash with Collingwood, who were in the comp a long time before them. I don't understand why they're not allowed to wear the prison bars in the heritage rounds, provided they're not playing Collingwood, but that's a whole new argument.

EDIT: Just saw the graphic in the article and it is uncomfortably close to the Crows outfit. I still don't have a problem with the colours, but they're going to have to be very careful with the jumper design.

Looks a lot like our Yellow based alternate, I like that strip, I hope it doesn't mean red strip against them, although our regular would seem to clash the least.

Aren't they more like Fitzroy's old colours than ours?

If Fitzroy were around. But you raise a good point, We were allowed as a 2nd team of Blue, Red & Gold, then Fitzroy merged.

We will soon have

Blue Gold Red - Adelaide
Blue Gold Red - Gold Coast
Blue Gold Maroon - Brisbane

Will make QLD 'Showdowns' interesting.

As I said I don't give a rats tossbag what colours they wear (I'm not a Collingwood supporter) I just find it Hypocritical that Port weren't allowed Black & White for this very reason.

Were Port given the opportunity to keep the colours but change the design. We have 2 teams with blue and white stripes and another with blue and white text, surely 2 black and white teams would have been do-able.

Horizontal stripes would have been less of a disaster than teal.

Using red, gold and blue smacks of being a cheap marketing ploy to cash in on the Crows merchandising success.

They now do not have to go out into the market to create a new colour brand and style, the Crows have already done all the hard yakka for them

I don't think they were given an option, no. However, black & white are very distinct colours. I'm not sure how they could have come up with a design which didn't clash - even horizontal stripes would be a problem.

I think that's a little cynical. To be fair, their graphic does have a distinct resemblance to the surf lifesavers for which the GC is famous.

the blokes nickname is "jaundice"?

He's one up on Gold Coast, who have no nickname

Won’t get worked up until I see what the jumper looks like. If they’re going for the life saver motif (which will be the basis of their mascot) then it’ll be predominantly red and yellow and should look pretty different to our overall colour scheme.

As far as Collingwood not allowing Port to wear black and white, can’t say that I blame them. Right or wrong, Port joined a competition in which a Magpies team wearing black and white vertical stripes already existed and it wouldn’t be right to allow Port to enter the AFL under any nickname if they were going to wear the same clobber. Might have been a different story if they wanted black and white but not in stripes (and obviously not as the magpies) but who knows…

I’d like to know how the Gold Coast will get away without having an official nickname. For a team being built from the ground up, it’s going to be an absolute nightmare as far as marketing is concerned.

I think the AFL should also be a bit concerned that the GC17 consortium only got about 10,000 public responses in the decision making process for nickname/mascot/colour selection. I would’ve thought that even people who are only slightly interested would’ve piped up to have some input, very worrying indeed.

GC are Red, White, Blue & Gold.

They'll delete either the White & Gold or the Blue and Red when a team re-locates up there in the next 5 years.

Where are people getting white from? This is from the GC17 site:

GC 17 LAUNCH THE GOLD COAST FOOTBALL CLUB

Friday, 5 September 2008
GC 17, the Gold Coast’s bid for the 17th licence in the Australian Football League, tonight officially launched its name, logo, colours and mascot.

Unveiled at a Gala function on the Gold Coast the club will be known and marketed as the GOLD COAST FOOTBALL CLUB or GCFC.
Club colours will be red, gold and blue and the club mascot will be an iconic Gold Coast surf identity know as "GC ".
GC 17 will deliver its formal submission to the Australian Football League on October 13 for the 17th AFL licence.
The group must satisfy the AFL it has met a set of key criteria including community and business engagement and the development of a football department.
One of the key criteria is the development of a club identity. GC 17 Chairman John Witheriff said the launch of the club’s identity was an historic occasion and followed an intensive process which included community input, research and an analysis of the commercial viability of the brand and logo.
"The GC 17 Bid Team carefully considered all the available information and community input from the process," he said.
"The overwhelming response was that people were passionate about the Gold Coast and wanted the team’s identity to reflect the symbols of the Gold Coast.
"From there we determined that within the AFL there was a strong opportunity in both the local and national market to take a unique branding position as a sporting team based around our home, the Gold Coast.
"Gold Coasters love the Gold Coast. We believe in our community, we believe in ourselves and what we have to offer. We will also believe in and have an emotional connection to our AFL football team.
"AFL fans everywhere will understand what we are about as soon as we run onto the field ... we are about the Gold Coast and what it stands for. We are proudly GC and we will have half a million people behind us."
Mr Witheriff said the Gold Coast Football Club will reflect the local community – progressive, innovative, exciting and a little bit cheeky.
"Our values will be based on commitment, courage, discipline, respect and integrity," he said.
Mr Witheriff said in deciding the name, the team wanted to do more than just exist.
"We want to evoke emotion in people. AFL football is an emotive sport. A supporter’s emotional world is put on the line every time their team runs onto the field," he said.
"With the Gold Coast Football Club playing in the national AFL competition we want people to feel like they belong to this team which will bring so much to the region."
GC17 believes the team will be known simply as Gold Coast or GC and expects fans will create their own cheers or chants when cheering on the team during games.
Mr Witheriff said the colours and mascot were chosen to symbolise the beach culture of the Gold Coast – Red (sun), Gold (sand) and Blue (ocean and sky) and the iconic beach culture of the region.
"This is our journey to become the most exciting sporting club in Australia – the Gold Coast Football Club!"

Green Gold and Aqua would of been more appropriate.

Gold for the Sand
Aqua for the Surf
Green for the surrounding Hinterland.

Those colours are distinct and would not clash at all.

Im more concerned about the fact that Dean Brogan is Gold Coasts mascot:

On a more serious note, I think it is a bit of an issue. Its strange theyve chosen the same colours as the Crows.

As for the Port/Collingwood thing. Fair enough not being called the Magpies, but the Prison Bars was nothing like what Collingwood was wearing when we entered the league.

You should have used the Eddie arguement.

"their jersey is white and black, ours is black and white"
