Hawthorn-Geelong match sold out

| July 23, 2008 02:22pm

ALL public tickets for Friday night's blockbuster match between Hawthorn and Geelong have been sold. Demand has been, the first meeting between the two teams this season.

The AFL has advised that even the standing room seats have been sold, and while there are a small number of seats remaining for sale in the AFL Members Area, AFL members should pre-book a ticket if they wished to be certain of entry. This news is likely to increase pressure on, as Channel 10 did last week for the sold out Cats-Dogs clash.

As it stands, Seven will show Better Homes and Gardens at 7.30pm and the football at 8.30pm. Geelong president Frank Costa and Hawks president Jeff Kennett have both lobbied the network to change its schedule.

Linky Link

The Herald Sun reports today that Kennett is continuing talks with Ch7 boss Ian Johnson to have the game shown live. Wouldn't surprise me if 7 do a backflip at the last minute so don't lose hope yet.

If they don't then they're truly a bunch of morons. What better way to get higher ratings on a Friday night. Responsibility to their sponsors my a***. As if the recent publicity surrounding their refusal to show post Sunday matches' celebrations wasn't bad enough.

Yep no way there will be 95 we would struggle to get that in a prelim. Could be high 80s though which is still pretty amazing. Will shit Pies and Bombers fans up anyway in terms of huge crowds being possible without them.

Hawks fans will be happy considering they can't pull a crowd on their own.

i don't think so.

If the mcg has sold all standing room tix, then there will be no entry with a membership card unless you have a reserved seat.

Hawks, Cats to fill the 'G

Jake Niall | July 23, 2008

HAWTHORN and Geelong could be heading for the season's biggest attendance, with the AFL now selling standing-room and restricted-viewing seats for Friday night's match at the MCG.

On the basis of the extraordinary demand for tickets to this long-anticipated match, the Hawks believe the crowd could exceed the Anzac Day attendance and push the club's record home-and-away turnout — 92,935 against Collingwood at Waverley in 1981.

The AFL has sold all 52,500 public seats to the match. The bulk of the 18,000 AFL members' reserve seats have been sold, and about 7000 guest passes have been sold to the 21,500-capacity MCC members' reserve. A guest pass holder must be accompanied by an MCC member, which suggests a significant turnout in the MCC.

Hawthorn's acting chief executive, Terry Dillon, said last night that the crowd could surpass this year's Anzac Day attendance (88,999), given good weather and a healthy "walk-up" of MCC members.

Dillon said there were three factors that would determine the size of the crowd. "The three variables are the weather, the MCC walk-up — and there's a strong indication from the guest passes that there will be a very strong turn-up — and the number of (Hawthorn) annual reserve seat-holders going."

The AFL members' reserve is expected to sell out by the start of the game, with the league urging AFL members who wish to attend the game to purchase a ticket quickly.

With fine weather forecast for Friday, the match is a strong chance to be the highest-ever Geelong home-and-away crowd. Geelong's record for a regular-season game is 87,653, against Essendon in round 11 of 1989.

The enormous interest in this game has not abated, despite Hawthorn's unexpected defeat by St Kilda last week and the likely absence of Gary Ablett and Shane Crawford. The huge rush for tickets appears to support the argument of the AFL's commercial operations chief Gillon McLachlan that the new schedule — these teams have not played this year and have not played since round 4, 2007 — had built up a greater demand for the match.

Hawthorn also has reported unprecedented corporate interest in this match, with all of its corporate allocation of seats set to be filled. Dillon said the AFL was selling standing-room tickets now, with about 5000 available.

The Hawks sell about 11,500 annual reserve seats — members who are guaranteed a seat to every game. The number of this group, coupled with the MCC numbers, will determine whether the crowd breaks records.

The MCG holds almost exactly 100,000, but it has never reached that number since the new stands were completely finished before the 2006 season.

The highest crowd since then was not the past two grand finals, but the preliminary final of last year, when slightly over 98,000 watched the Cats defeat Collingwood.

I did send them an e-mail but they didn't reply!!! Rah!!!

Arrhh yes. The booking fee. Kinda like being offered a TV for 500 bucks and then being told that cause you walked through the blue door it's now $550....

I wouldn't worry too much about it SJ. Although the "walk up" era may have past you by long ago there were still some of us that...well....not relied on but still took it as the norm. I'm sure I'll get by in the future though. Blue door here I come.

im with ya devo...

Now I'm pretty sure what you will find, is that if you are an 11/17 game Hawthorn member you CAN'T gain entry by scanning your card on the night. The only Hawthorn members that can turn up on the night and scan their cards are those members that have a reserved season seat. I'm pretty sure Cat members can't show up and scan their ticket regardless of what package they have.

If you don't think I'm right, think about it, if you turn up and scan your membership on the night where are you expecting to sit, if every seat is sold and all standing room tickets sold except for the MCC, where are you going to sit or stand.

i did ring the club 5 mins before i had posted original message , and i am sure there would be only a small number let in

but i do have a seat and i still have to scan my membership to get in ! no barcode on my ticket from cs

i did also say did not know if applied to cats and for them to ring their club !

I got a seat! Actually, I got a ticket and three seats, so haywood is gonna sneak up from the MCC standing room area and sit with me.
