read an article this morning about the exact players who's contract expires.
a couple concern me, what do you guys think?
collingwood and essendon are after them.
bartel went for essendon all his life
enright came from interstate
kelly apparantly worth 100,000 more than we can pay him
and i think many will try and snag chappy too.
also ling, milburn out of contract - but not to concerned about them being taken as ling is very dedicated to the club and milburn is getting old,

I'm not too worried.

It was a bit of a media beat-up because they had nothing else to put on the back page.

They throw that up to every club that's a good side. It really only becomes an issue at the end of the season, not currently.

I'd be suprised if any of the players left.

from what i can see down at the club i would be extremely suprised if any of the players left with the potential to play in a premiership side in favour of a bottom side in collingwood or essendon for more money.
they seem to be a very close knit group.

Lazy old Scott Gullan.

With Sanderson and Riccardi retiring, plus delisting a few season VFL dedbeats and replcaing with some young kids will give us enough room to fit everyone who wants to remain.

speaking of ricco and sando - what are the requirements for the veteran list? i assume that we would have no players eligible, which would mean we could have up to 6 rookie-listed players next year - including two able to play AFL - is this correct?

And/or? If it was or Id say King and Dash would be getting close. Bar them no-one will.

And.

Steven King will be eligible for the veterans list in 2008, Darren Milburn will be eligible in 2007.

Next in line would be Tom Harley and Matthew Scarlett, both eligible in 2009.

That is totally correct.

If both retire, we can nominate two rookies to be eligible for AFL, if only one retires we can nominate one rookie to be eligible for AFL.

Only proviso on nominating rookies is that you must have a full primary list of 38.

not worried whatsoever, none will leave. am very confident about that.

I doubt we would lose any but speaking to my mates brother in law who works for one of the sports management places he said Collingwoood is after Bartel, S.Johnson and Tenace, whilst Essendon are prepared to offer big bucks for kelly in particular.

think all the boys will stay and hopefully they don't go chasing a few extra bucks afterthe club has looked after them so well.

Collingwood and Essendon are chasing anything that can move with a bit of speed, dont be surprised to see Mr. Ed don an Essendon or Collingwood next season. And i aint talking about McGuire.

This is just part and parcel with the places we are going. We have good players, and the struggling teams have lots of money to throw at them. One of Bombers main essentials in getting players here was because they were good people. Hopefully this may shien through when it comes to contract signing time.

Collingwood and Essendon, who are apparently the clubs that will be on the lookout for any 'star', aren't exactly fitting everyone in the salary cap with ease.

Even though I reckon they're pretty ordinary sides (I'm sure you would agree on that one!) doesn't particulary mean they have no salary cap pressure, therefore being able to 'shop' for all players. All sides have their 'stars' and Collingwood (Buckley, Tarrant, Rocca etc) and Essendon (Hird, Lloyd etc) I assume would be paying upto or very close to the 100% mark of their salary cap.

Remember, it was only 1 or 2 years ago at the latest that these clubs were having to ship players elsewhere because they couldn't meet their demands.

I will be surprised that many, if any, big name players are recruited by Essendon and Collingwood for next season.

As I understand it Bartel was always a Richmond Supporter that used to go to watch the Cats as they were the local team, basicaly the Cats were his second team and Kelly was always an Essendon supporter but really I doubt that means as much you think it might. Once you play for a club your old alegance go's out the door because they are not on the outside looking in - you are in.You are the club. Stephen King also followed Ess but he is all hoops now.
Players generally only move if they are unhappy. Most dont get that unhappy about money IF they reallise they are being treated fairly in reguard to the other players, their place in the side/club and previous performance in measurables like the B&F. I think if most of our group know that the A grade group is paid between 200 and 350 depending where they fit in this. The classic ballsup was Greg Williams all those years ago when the Cats refused to up his money after winning the B&F, from 45,000 to 55,000.So he went to the Swans for over a 100.If Bartel wins the B&F this year, the same issue will not happen Players also know its a far better experience playing with a winning group and are willing to sacrifice like Brisbane. If a player is just focused on money, a winning side will generally not be able to match an offer from a bottom club with nothing but ordinary players. The Cap must be paid so if the bottom side wants to pay one player a million most clubs cant match it. This is where I think 2 or 3 players should be able be exclude from the cap but thats another issue.
Worst case - If sombody wants to go, we do it in professional way and try to get as much for him as possible.Bartel for eg. would be worth a hell of a lot more than R1, pick8. Top 5 and a player thankyou.

PIES TARGET CATS
Thursday, May 12, 2005
Jay Clark

COLLINGWOOD has begun a desperate bid for a number of out-of-contract Cats.
The Pies' attention has turned to several big name Geelong players, currently negotiating new deals with the club.
Cats' deputy vice-captain Cameron Ling heads a list of players whose contracts expire at season's end, including James Kelly, Jimmy Bartel, Darren Milburn, Jarad Rooke and Steve Johnson.
An insider yesterday confirmed the Pies have made a generous offer to at least one Cat, believed to be worth about $350,000 per year.
It is consistent with Collingwood's reported multi-million dollar offers to star Brisbane Lion Jonathan Brown and St Kilda ball magnet Nick Dal Santo in recent weeks.
Both have been publicly rejected and forced Collingwood to look elsewhere.
High on the Pies' shopping list are hardened onballers and key backmen to help bolster an ageing list languishing on the bottom of the AFL ladder.
Collingwood officials yesterday did not deny making an offer to a high-profile Geelong player, or its rising interest in the rest of the Cats' list.
``We wish to make no comment on this matter,'' was the official line from a club spokeswoman.
Geelong also refused to comment. Instead hoping, and understandably confident of keeping its playing group together.
Cats' CEO Brian Cook said last month the club had begun working through the pile of expiring contracts.
The details of which would remain confidential, he said.
``Player contracts are personal issues between ourselves and the player but it's no secret that most of our contracts are for two years so logically around half of our player list will be up for contract each year,'' Cook said.
``We will continue to work through those contracts on a responsible basis.''
Other Cats out of contract at season's end include VFL players Matthew McCarthy, James Rahilly and David Haynes, as well as veterans Brenton Sanderson and Peter Riccardi.

Players also know the scrutiny they will be under if they leave JUST for more dough. That added stress plus the stress of playing in a losing team is not really worth it.

I am not really that worried yet. I also think our boys know where they are on the pecking order of the AFL. Also they are young enough to know that another 5-10 years of this kind of pay and they are laughing either way.
