Review Geelong defeats Essendon by 30 points @ MCG

If Freo had the opening four games Geelong did, they would be at least 2-2. There's been an evident drop-off in form since the Hawthorn game; it's just that since then, we've only played a mid-table side and two bottom four sides.

Surely we're beyond just looking at W/L as an indicator of how the side is performing?
Biggy I agree with your last line, been told by enough on here that half our side are s**t players, I'm sold.

I'm thinking more along the lines of how quickly the opposition transitions out of our 50 and into theirs. GWS were doing this quite easily, as was Essendon, though they hit a wall in the centre of the ground in the second half on Saturday
GWS are a far better side this year, Will beat better sides than us.

I think it was an all round effort on JD. Saw Hendo outplay him a few times also.

JD is seriously overrated. He is rated on the potential he should have but is yet a long way off reaching. Having said that I thought our defensive players had a very strong training run last Saturday and should be the better for it in upcoming games.

Hawthorn was 4-4 and extremely sluggish last year before they clicked into gear.

West Coast was 2-2 and had suffered a 0 goal to 9 goal first quarter at the hands of Fremantle. At that point who on earth could have predicted a top four finish, GF berth and premiership favouritism to many a year later?

Sydney was 1-3 this time in 2014 and went on to win the minor premiership and make the GF. It wasn't their slow start to the season that cost them on that final day.

We are doing better on the ladder than all of those teams and I daresay we've been playing as well as if not better than all those sides at those various points of those season.

I agree, though that doesn't mean we shouldnt discuss why sides transition easily from defensive 50 against us
duly noted Maxy, but I'm not going to discuss it, no offence to you, but their are a lot of experts here who will tell you why sides can do it, and I'm no expert.

Of course and that'd be reflected in another metric entirely which I don't have, probably would have to watch on a game by game basis.

On Essendon, at the ground they appeared to set up a very defensive zone (to stop us scoring heavily) and the biggest problem was how many times we'd miss a target on transition or fumbled, granted not all were in our forward 50, but I've mentioned it last season and this season as a problem. We commit numbers on offense and often when we **** it up, because of a slowing defence we are dead to rights on fast rebound.

We're not going to see wholesale changes to the back 6 so we just need to not **** it up as often and try and pick some quicker, pressure intensive players further afield to slow those fast breaks.
I was at the ground on Saturday as well and saw similar. Ive actually noticed two scenarios transpire over the last few years. The first being the one you mentioned and the second where our mids get held up in the centre of the ground and before we can commit numbers forward, opposition pressure forces them to kick long and high inside 50, often resulting in a shallow entry, killed contest or worse, an uncontested mark from an opposition defender or ruckman that has pushed back. This can sometimes work if someone like Hawkins is isolated and on song, though it is high risk. I still wake up in a cold sweat sometimes thinking about Zac Dawson and Aaron Sandilands mopping up aimless kicks inside our forward 50 at Kardinia Park late in the last quarter of the 2013 Qualifying Final

Nope, at this point in the season if we are winning more than we are losing, and if we look better than last year, it'll do.
We will beat Port and the Suns in the next fortnight.

Habitual lurker here, firmly admire everyone's passions re: everything GFC on this board but, at the end of the day, round, week or year, the bolded above is all that really matters. No matter how the results are achieved, or how painful they may be to sit through, the W's are all that matter.

Carry On...

But we're four rounds in, and two of those wins have come from bottom-four sides. So you see how looking at the W/L record at this point may not be indicative of how well the team is actually performing?

I do. But I'd rather be playing poorly and winning than playing good fast moving, efficient footy and coming up short. Let's just hope we get the chocolates this weekend. Good, bad or indifferent.

I am confused, didnt we win all of those stats against the Lions? Or doesnt that count cos they are shit?
Its really quite simple and I fail to see why people can't follow it.

When we get beaten in a statistical category, we are no good duds following on from previous years maintaining the status quo.

When we win a statistical category, the win is irrelevant as the opponents were ones we should have beaten and thus the statistic relevance is void.

Its very easy :rolleyes:o_O

And you just need to follow their arguments and posts to see how the process works.

Keep your opinion as your own.

Listen to all the opinions and form your view. Dont change just as others think you should.

And of course, don't ram your down other peoples throats. :p
There is enough of that here already.....:(

HI Dazbroncos, Sorry but I told you I'm confused on how to post here, sarcasm or no sarcasm, hate the players or like the players, post a opinion
or trash an opinion, trash the team or back the team I don,t know. Sorry I disappointed you.

Sorry if you misread but you have not disappointed me at all.

All good here.
I had no sarcasm either. Post your thoughts as you see fit. :thumbsu:

Likes and dislikes. Pros and cons.
Stay within board rules, and it's all dandy.
Enjoy

Dont worry Lana. I have been lurking here for years and still havent figured it out.

I went to the ess game for what its worth. Nothing new to say on how we played other than that it was one of the least satisfying wins I have ever been to. Ill still take the 4 points.

It probably would have been satisfying if we kicked straight, but we didn't. 4 point and no injuries makes it a double win in my book.

If you're here you might as well post,as the saying goes the more the merrier.

Welcome to the forum, please keep arms inside the vehicle and express your opinions as whimsically as possible :)

I dont think you can take much from the Essendon game other than we didn't try hard and we won.
When we try hard we can beat good teams. Its early in the season and we have had a good enough start that I smell potential.
Im not going to get pessimistic or optimistic yet as its still early, im not going to try guessing where we will finish up until round 10ish. I do get excited watching danger though......

Something about 10 sounds about right

I agree there is no need to predict at this stage, hopefully we can build from our good performence in round 1. It mattered a lot more than our game against Essendon. Our games in Adelaide over the next week are similar to round 1. Top teams tend to win interstate
