Bored during the offseason, i had an attempt at doing geelongs total player payments. The limit set for 2012 is $8.78 million

primary listed player 38 over 8.6M average wage of 226K

500K*2.5
Bartel Selwood Scarlett (vet)
400k *5.5
Kelly Corey Taylor Chapman SJ Enright (vet)
350K*2
Mackie Pods
300k*3
Hunt Varcoe Hawkins
250K*4
Wojcinski Stokes Byrnes Lonergan
200k*6
T.hunt Christensen Duncan Menzel Hogan West
120k*6
Simpson Gillies Brown Motlop Cowen Vardy
70K*9
Smedts Guthrie Schroder GHS Bews 4 more to be drafted
20k*7 (i think only half of the rookie wage goes towards TPP
Bathie Simpkin Stringer Burbury Walker 2 yet to be drafted

I'm pretty sure Cook said at some point this year that our highest paid player was earning 550 which I think it's safe to assume it's Scarlett since he's on the vets list.

Are you calculating this list for next year or over the longer term? For example it's probably reasonable to assume Bartel's new contract, along with Kel's, have pay rises in them (i.e. more than 400 and 500 respectively) but the bulk of that will be backended to when they are veterans listed in 2014.

Anyway assuming your list is for next year I'd make a few changes:
Mackie 350 probably since he re-signed for 4 years after the 09 GF when he was in quite good form (as he returned to this year).

No way will Pods be on that much, 250 maybe. Wojo will be on less too given the cap nearly forced us to retire him after the 09 GF and he took a big pay cut to stay.

I suspect Lonergan getting 3 years last year was about backending it for cap management (although glad we gave him that long a contract given how well he's played) so again he won't be on 250 next year, but might be down the road.

Byrnes is probably on a bit less than what you have him, and I'd say Hogan is more 100 rather than 200.

Duncan and Menzel are still on their existing draftee contracts so they probably weren't heaps when signed although they'll get good pay rises in new contracts for 2013 you'd think.

West also signed at the end of 2010 when he wouldn't have been worth as much, although you would think that like Duncan Menzel Bundy etc the club will be working on longer term contracts for them now that will have pay rises built into them. Vardy's new contract til end 2013 might also be at more than 120, particularly if he plays a high number of games.

Not a bad attempt though, most of the changes I'd make are minimal, i.e. Byrnes from 250 to 200 and Wojo from 250 to 200 type stuff, so you've done well.

Its using the list for next year, but i am not taking into account whether a players contract, if i put a person down as 400K it means there average contracted wage for the 3 years would be 400k a year

Mackie was put done at 350K a year

A player at Pods age and standing( being a mature age rookie) would have a performance based contract, games and goals. given that in the past two seasons he has played 20+ games a year for around 50 goals, it would be ridiculous for Pods to be paid less.

I suspect Lonergan getting 3 years last year was about backending it for cap management (although glad we gave him that long a contract given how well he's played) so again he won't be on 250 next year, but might be down the road.

Byrnes is probably on a bit less than what you have him, and I'd say

Byrnes wage would have been down this year since he missed most of the season through injury, but once he gets his body right he will play 15+ games next year, especally due to the contagious general.

Hogan is more 100 rather than 200.

In 2009 and 2010 Hogan he play 10+ games, he was drafted in 2006, He was first out of contract at the end of 2008, assuming he got a two year deal his next contract was negotiated after two good seasons so that its not inconceivable that he is getting paid closer to 200K then then 120K

Duncan and Menzel are still on their existing draftee contracts so they probably weren't heaps when signed although they'll get good pay rises in new contracts for 2013 you'd think.

When players get drafted they get a two year deal, next year is Duncan and Menzel's 3rd year on the list, hence they get a pay rise for 2012.

West also signed at the end of 2010 when he wouldn't have been worth as much, although you would think that like Duncan Menzel Bundy etc the club will be working on longer term contracts for them now that will have pay rises built into them. I generally spit the players who had played around 20 career matches in the 200k band, and players who have played less than 10 career matches in the 120K. Players who are on there original contract at 70K.

The wages of players in our top payed brackets (350K and above) will be quite contstant for the duration of the contract. While our younger players are going to rise year by year, pretty much funded by the retirements of older players. Next year i predict that our retirements will be Scarlett, Corey and Wojcinski. This will free around 900K to our TPP.

Menzel and Duncan signed 3 year contracts when they were drafted-you can do this instead of the standard 2, and clubs often do it with interstate draftees. Given neither had played a game at that point, it's reasonable to assume that the 3rd year of that contract would have had very little rise (from the standard draftee wage of 60k) built into it. Maybe some performance based clauses, but that wouldn't be enough for an extra 140k you'd think. No doubt they'll get 200 or more in 2013, but I doubt they are on that much in 2012.

Agree with the rest of your reply, except for Pods. While he's deserving of being paid close to that, it's unlikely he's on that much relative to the other senior players. I do take your point about performance based clauses getting it close to that though, he's probably got a fair few of those in his contract.

Think you will find they signed 2 year contracts and both were extended by 12 months in June this year.
May have been promised some more coin then.
Then again I may have read the article wrong.

I didn't want to get involved in this subject as your head can break thinking about it.
Especially as we don't have any known structure to work from in order to make educated guesses.

The only thing I am working on his the comment from Cook that the range of payments from the highest paid to our lowest would probably be the narrowest in the league.

I've gone for 95% of the cap to allow for bonuses etc.

550k Bartel Selwood
470K Scarlett (vet)
400k Kelly Corey Taylor Chapman SJ Enright (vet)
370K Mackie
300k Varcoe Hawkins Lonergan
260K Stokes Byrnes Pods Hunt

140k
Wojcinski T.hunt Christensen Duncan Menzel Hogan West Vardy
120k
Simpson Gillies Brown Motlop Cowan
70K
Smedts Guthrie Schroder GHS Bews 4 more to be drafted
20k
Bathie Simpkin Stringer Burbury Walker 2 yet to be drafted

I guess you can use 2% of the cap to lift some of the lower paid players up a bit if you think it's warranted. That's an extra 170k to use.

But the top bracket looks ok to me.

Both Menzel and Duncan both signed three-year contracts upon being chosen in the first and second rounds of the draft

VC Scarlett will clearly be the one on 550 because half his salary is outside the salary cap anyway.

Bartel and Selwood probably one rung down on 500.

The rest I'd say you are close to right, given our flat payment structure across the list, that's the type of list I was thinking it would look like.

It was confirmed a while ago that Selwood is our highest-paid player. Plus didn't one of the coaches say the highest pay was $600k?

So Sel with $600k.
