Football stadiums usually have a 30-40 year lifespan without major renovations (Astrodome was closed in 2008 going to be turned into a park) In 20-30 years Etihad would be due for demolition or major redevelopment at that point the AFL would sell the land to developers for a huge amount and move to another site.
It will likely be part of a future redevelopment of Melbourne Terminus as the gov in 2030-2040 moves the freight port to Geelong area and Etihad reaches the end of its life.
Already Sydney is overtaking Melbourne as a freight port because of the problem with having a freight port next to the city. Melbourne is also one of the only major world cities in the world that still has a major commercial freight port. Once fishermans bend is full with everything else heritage listed the rail and port works would be the only place to expand the CBD.
A future gov would try to triple or quadruple up on votes by removing an 'ugly' port, creating a parks and entertainment district with new stadium, creating a new industry/jobs in a regional area and starting a huge city construction project plus developers will give bucket loads of money to a party that adopts that policy. I think the current gov already have a Geelong/Werribee port plan.

Although that might be part of the problem, another problem is the bay doesn't allow the larger ships. It will be moved to outside of the bay and brought in by a dedicated train line. A lot will depend on this port sale though (which they are screwing)

Not particularly, the mayors office want it gone as it basically "cuts off" Melbourne from the Docklands, more so than say gridlock traffic down the Monash does, but Melbourne has grown to need it since effectively sports had and have been feuding with the MCC for access to the MCG, and since the AFL closed Waverly which is proven to be a decision for the then and there as opposed to the future sprawl, the AFL want Etihad and need Etihad to then go and launch with all clubs solvent and strong provided they are run by decent admin.

I've heard this and my question is how is it cutting off the docklands? Its just a flippant "vibe of it " comment. They mayors office will have a new mayor in a short time and the new mayor will probably have new ideas probably equally as dumb.
The mayors office is trying to come up with a "blame something apart from me " excuse for the lack of people wanting to visit a Ferris wheel nearly 4Km away from Federation Square.

The bridge over the train line was built to access the stadium and the docklands. Widen it or make another bridge if it is a problem.
The Mayors office seems to have been quite happy to partially block the large spaces that were previously around the stadium.
They can always build another bridge.
Its easy as anything to walk through there. Trouble is , if you are in the CBD and you don't live in the docklands, you really aren't that motivated to go there.
Southbank is way more convenient as a go and walk around and look at shops area.

Me personally? if i'm at the Footy and looking for something to eat, I'll check out the Docklands or maybe near the Casino if i'm parked there.
If i'm in the CBD and I want something to eat , I'll consider Southbank, but they are overpriced and i'm stingy and there are some pretty good places in the CBD.

LOL and now BJ has to front up and represent Essendon. "Nah it's all good, no regrets. No regrets at all." *stares off into the distance*"
I'd regret that pocket square, suit and desert boots combo if I was him.

Looks like a 'special' peacock.

can someone PLEASE explain to me how champion data can come to the conclusion that based on quality, we have the 2nd worst forward line in the competition? with players like roo, brucey, sincs, schnieds jnr, billings etc. could even chuck paddy and maybe even mav in the mix there, supposedly essendon are ranked 14th (?????) melbourne 15th (??????) and BRISBANE ahead of us...only carlton ranked lower....um ok

I guess it's on stats output overall rather than individuals or potential. A lot of teams now have 5 to 7 players capable of scoring multiple goals. we rely very heavily on to few.

I agree, that's clearly bullshit. We have a better forward line than all of those teams you mentioned.

According to the official AFL ratings our best tall forward is Nick Riewoldt. 16th in the AFL, behind such superstars as Jarrad Wait and Jack Darling and only marginally in front of Lachie Henderson and Jay Schulz.

Josh Bruce is 34th. He is slightly behind Levi Casboult and Chris Dawes. Ryan Shoenmakers and Jesse White are better key forward apparently.

Not sure how Josh did so well in the Coleman since he's such a spud, i can only assume we had a 5 star midfield delivering to him. Must have been that Farren Ray guy. This is the secret to footy folks, get a totally crap player who can somehow kick 100 goals a year. No-one will try to steal him because he is so crap despite all the goals he kicks. :drunk: I'm just confused about why other clubs seem to be targeting Josh, surely Jesse White should be in the spotlight.

Now Medium/Small forwards.
Jack Billings is our best followed by Jack Sinclair (61st in the AFL). These guys are behind Robin Nahas.
Cyril has more than 3 times the rating points of Jack Sinclair who kicked less than double the goals Jack did in the home and away season using more games to do it. ( Cyril DID win a lot of contested ball though ).
Apparently our only midfielder/forwards were Schnieder and Brenton Payne. Schniederman's score doesn't rate this year and Payne doesn't have one.

Mav kicked as many goals as Lonie, but he's not a forward so doesn't count towards our forward line.

I think the ratings are compiled over 50 games or something, Bruce's first couple seasons would be dragging his 'score' down a lot.

And Bruce's second half of the year really tapered off as (I'm assuming) teams shut him down more and the young kids were gassed.

It's why stats aren't everything. Some don't pass the eye test. Essendon fans would nearly pull their hair out every time Stanton touched the ball but on paper he was an excellent player.

Richmond unprecedented request to end match early, Jay Clark’s view from the sidelines
March 11, 2016 11:26am
Jay ClarkHerald Sun

DAMIEN Hardwick threw up his arms and looked at his depleted bench. “We’ve got no one left,” he said to the nearby AFL official.

With 10 minutes left in Thursday night’s match between Port Adelaide and Richmond, things were starting to get heated on the boundary line and Hardwick, in particular, was furious.

After a savage run of injuries in its final NAB Challenge game, Richmond had only one fit man left on the bench.

And the players that were still able to run around out on Etihad Stadium were exhausted and cramping.

Poor old Connor Menadue couldn’t even walk anymore when his game time hit about 87 per cent in the final few minutes...

So is the problem :
a) We have a pre-season contest and it is particularly grueling.
b) Richmond are incapable of fielding a team that can make it through 4 quarters.

IF this was not NAB challenge and it was in fact the first game of the season and the same thing happened, would Hardwick have been happy.
I think its going to be a long season for the Tigers. ( maybe short at the end ).

I think its more likely they didn't give a stuff about that game than either a or b.

So why did he crack the shits?

I reckon he would have been shitty losing players before the real stuff starts. Same as if it was a intra club and a few go down. He's under all sorts of pressure to go further this year and even if they extend his contract they would tear it up if he doesn't advance in the finals again. The last few years they over rate themselves and lose early games, he will be very keen to start strong and go top 4 to give them every chance, this hurts their chances.

Since he seems to get a lot of mentions on this forum - Blaine Boekhurst played well last night for the blues 27 possessions and a goal (or two maybe)

Yeah he's playing pretty well this preseason. That's why he isn't getting bagged any more so shush before you highlight our hypocrisy any further. I didn't mean to be mean his name just lent it self to so many humorous jibes. Broke-horse was gold.

BJ is always right.

Hopefully that movie starts production soon.

geeze freo dont look too impressive, they really need to push some youth through that midfield and fwd line

But can a leopard (or a Lyon) change it's spots?
