No wonder Danger was having a sook about the rule change

I dont mind the rule change.

Only the Cats used it as a constant tactic week in and week out with other teams using it as needed during games. While it did clear the pack most of the time there were also times when the third man just hammered into the ruckman (who was being grappled by his opponent) and then missed entirely.

What this will stop is the guess work on free kicks around the stoppage. No more 50/50 calls on whether a ruck has been interfered with.

It should also lead to ruckmen running and jumping at ball ups and throw ins. With the 3rd man up there were too many rucks happy to grapple and let it happen, now it will be a genuine 1 v 1 so players will have the option of taking a couple of steps and jumping at the ball without worrying about 2 players (opp ruck and 3rd man) coming back the other way.

Someone like Hickey can now use his athletic ability to get some advantage in the ruck against the likes of Gawn, Goldstein etc around the ground.

I think that with our 'run and gun' style of ball movement we could really hurt some teams with this change. Our whole midfield group can stay mobile rather than parking at the feet of the ruckman while they wrestle each other and palm the ball straight down. Steven, Acres and Gresh in particular will be even more dangerous while guys like Armo and Ross will get some more relief from not always having to be the first hands option.

Add in the Selwood rule and I think that this only helps us and hurts teams that are heavy on the inside (Port, Cats, Carlton) or without a genuine #1 ruck (Dogs, Cats, Tigers). Can see why the Cats are whinging big time.

Geelong play Blicavs as a 3rd man up exclusively. So, they will lose here. But Saints will be impacted as well. Blicavs had 154 hitouts for the year, but Saints collectively had 116 hitouts for 3rd man ups according to champion data.

What it will mean for our rucks is that Holmes's value really goes up coz he can be quite effective in the ruck contest due to his height.
