The problem is we setup to kick to a pack of players in the pocket and hope for a mark and a low percentage chance for a shot on goal at a angle, or we force the ball over the boundary line and reset, to hope we kick a goal or continue to lock it into our foward line for repeat score attempts.
We're never going to kick a huge score this way particularly in finals situations.
I don't think I've ever seen a forward lead to the opposite pocket this season. It looks like the coaches value low percentage scoring opportunites, to keep us from turning it over in our forward line and the opposition scoring on the rebound.
I think we need to switch this up at some stage to be more daring with our scoring attempts.

Feels like we’ve over corrected from the freewheeling 2018 gameplan. I still think we are too inside heavy and this is where the problems begin. Like we regularly play 4-5 inside mids and STILL lose clearances.
We lose clearances because we play a -1 at the stoppage.

12th for centre clearance differential in the AFL though which boggles my mind.
Same as Tigers last couple we don't give a stuff about winning em. Our wings stay wide while the other teams charge in so it's often a 4 on 6. Gus and Lingers are already ready to help in defence. One tweak we should make I think is attacking from stoppages more when we need to.

Clearances are overrated as a raw stat, it’s about how cleanly the ball gets out of the stoppage. If our mids put pressure on the ball and ball carrier we are in a position to intercept and launch an attack while the oppo are out of position. It’s essentially rope a dope/sucker punch.

In some senses we have over corrected by not being as numbers heavy at stoppages, but it was a change that was necessary. It gives us more balance and ability to defend the larger grounds like the G. Our MCG record was pox before this year and the only two times we haven’t walked away with the points (GWS and Hawthorn) was more to do with our mids being lazy than not creating enough opportunities and leaking easy goals out the back or on the switch ala 17-20.

Good post,

It's definitely an issue. Our scores from stoppage percentage are way too low for this to be a part of the game plan. Especially with creative types on the forward 50 like Pickett, Fritsch, Spargo and ANB, I feel we have to manufacture goals far too much.

this 100%

Richmond and Hawthorn at their peak both went with similar gameplans

Its funny when we were a great clearance team we lost more than we won now it has flipped

All fair points and you’re correct but I still reckon with Gawn/Trac/Oliver we should be better than that.

Been going ok it seems. Mostly playing ruck/forward.
Unlikely to see AFL action but generally the reviews of him are positive from the VFL I've seen.

Thanks for the replies; good to hear Maj is still working away at it. Hope he cracks another game at some point. And good luck to your boys against the Dogs!

He’s looked superb in a number of games. Fitness was an issue at the start of the season but it’s improving
