Yep.
AFAIK.
Question to the intelligent people.
Is the rule that you actually have to remove 3 from your list? Or is the rule that you have to add 3 to your list with 2 having to come through the draft?
I'm still waiting for definitive proof on this. You have to remove three off the senior list but you can take only two picks and have the third as a rookie upgrade as we did in 2012.

Ok, but what I'm getting at is that we are currently 2 short on the list.
Can we just lose one ( say Lonergan) and then hit the draft?
And I asked for intelligent people![]()
I believe that it is the opposite, you must delist a minimum of 3 players off the primary list per year.

Not so. The rule relates to minimum selections in the ND. Ordinarily to achieve that you have to delist at least three. But because we are short we don't.You have to remove three off the senior list but you can take only two picks and have the third as a rookie upgrade as we did in 2012.
Tom Stewart and Tim House as rookie picks wouldn't go astray from my limited VFL viewing. Gives us key posts at both ends even if Stewart is shorter than most key backs but I think that stat is a little overrated. Has a bit of the Scotty Thompsons about him.
In a draft that's deep on mids we might get the 4th or 5th ranked tall with our first draft pick.
Either that or look at trade targets in Wood or Daw at North, Butcher at Port ect.

38 Senior Players
6 Rookies
2 Cat B Rookies (ignore for now)
Lonergan retires.
Bates and Delaney (or Read) delisted from Rookie List
List count now stands at 37 Senior + 4 Rookies (41 Total)
3 selections must be made during the draft (2 "live" + a rookie elevation is allowed).
Geelong makes 2 live selections during the draft and elevates Ruggles (senior list now stands at 40 while the rookie list now stands at 3).
The 3 Rookies retained are Read (or Delaney), Cornell & Parsons making the total list 43.
Geelong makes 1 Rookie Selection to bring to final list total to 44 (40 senior/4 rookies).
Cap space along with uncertainy around a handful of players means this is unlikely to happen.
Yeah i worded myself poorly. As i clarified in a later post you just have to enter the draft with 3 vacant spots on the senior list, you dont have to take 3 picks.
I dont think we will take the full 40 on the senior list next year though.

That's not correct, you definitely have to take at least 3 picks, or 2 picks and a rookie. Rule 6.2(d):
At a National Draft Selection Meeting:
(A) each Club shall exercise a minimum of 3 Draft selections (including selections forfeited under Rules 0, 10.11(b), 12.4(b), 13.4(b) and 14.4(d));
Not bad effort.
I think we will take 3 picks (our 2nd and 3rd and brisbanes 3rd) plus elevate ruggles and i think we will only have 38 or 39 on the list-saves cap and allows us to have 2 extra guys on 1 year deals, means we can rookie some of our vfl guys and have the flexibility to cut them in a stronger draft next year if they dont work out.
Lonergan retired cowan delisted. Still think enright will retire but hope he doesnt.
One of our fringes will seek a trade for more gametime-maybe vardy maybe ghs.
Leaves us at 34/35 on the list. Take 3 picks + ruggles equals 38/39.
Ruggles goes up,bates delisted and either delaney or read kept (possibly). Rookie 2 or 3 of stewart/house/tsitas/sexton/hickey.
We could also bring in a 2nd cat b rookie as we only have 1 since we elevated luxford.
I am also not sure whether lucey can stay as a cat b rookie for a 3rd year or whether he has to go on the normal rookie list.
Even though I think you're correct that we won't fill our list this year, the clarification that has been given above certainly does give us some flexibility considering our relatively poor draft position,Thats true and obvious-as i said we took 2 picks and elevated stringer in 2012.
So when you submit your lists to the afl pre draft you have to have no more than 37 on the list, you must take minimum 2 picks and can elevate one or more rookies (the latter if you submit a list of less than 37).
PO, what do you think we could realistically get for Vardy? We know that clubs tend to pay 'overs' for young key position players with talent...but I can't see us getting more than a mid 30's pick for him in a strong draft? Him being a ruck/kpf probably inflates his value but this may be offset by the fact that his is injury prone with rumoured attitude issues?
He is not exactly bennell, any issues he has arent ones that will affect his value much.however he is injury prone and out of contract and those factors will affect his value a lot.considering we would be selling low i would rather keep him but he is OOC and i can see him wanting more gametime than he is likely to get here, so if he wants to go we will have to take what we can get. I would say what we got for walker which will turn out to be about pick 40 is the best we'd get for vardy. Then away clubs have given away 2nd rounders before for rubbish talls like renouf and lisle and hampson so you never know, but i doubt it.
If possible the club should try and bundle some combination of our 2nd rnd, brisbanes 3rd and whatever pick we get for vardy (not necessarily all 3) to get back into the 1st rnd if we can, possibly via an academy club.

If he plays the season out with a few games in the AFL then a 2nd rounder is on the cards. Stanley played VFL and we gave up pick 21. Hendo was similar. Vards always has Darce pumping up his potential so hopefully he gets to show a little in the second half of the year.
