I suspect that they won’t go for Darcy. They’ve drafted Dekoning and the giant basketballer, and have Fort on a 2 year deal. My guess is they’re gonna get games into Dekoning in the vfl this year and even next year, and 2023 he comes in as the number one ruckman for the next decade. If the giant basketballer comes up, that’s a bonus!
We won't have the luxury of rucking SDK full time. He'll be full back for a decade

I think it’s far too early to say where SDK will end up playing. This season he has played everywhere and shown good signs. But dismissing him as a ruck because he didn’t play juniors there (as others have, not you) is, in my view, just nonsense.
I agree it's nonsensical to discount him being a long term ruck based on his junior work, but I'm more than happy to discount him playing ruck based on us having a greater need for him at full back

I don’t agree it’s a greater need.

Darcy is 22 and already the number 1 ruck. He in an ideal target that would allow us to then concentrate on other areas as we replace players on the list. But I don’t think that he wants to leave or that the club will target him.

Clark has a lot of work to do on his game he’ll become a good player but he’ll need to work a lot harder. His issue is mostly around game awareness which will only improve by playing games. They should not have players like him as the sub it hinders their development if they don’t play.
I agree Darcy is a capable ruck and would allow us to work on filling other positional needs, but I just think that he'll cost us so much we'll struggle to have anything much left to spend on said remaining needs.

We need maybe something like 4 mids, a ruck, and a KPD for 2023-24. If the mids are being drafted we need them drafted this year not next. If you're trading out Clark we need 5.

There are too many examples of players adapting and evolving in afl. Not every player is Hawkins or Selwood. Did Ling play as a run with mid? The club will expose him to multiple roles... who knows what he ends up being. It may well change as he matures.

Each to their opinion by for my money, I look at the list for key sized defenders under 30 who look capable and if you take out SDK I count zero. Kreuger might make it one if we're lucky.

Sav and Fort will never be elite rucks but they're better than zero. A few years from then we could even have a Neale or Tsapatolis running around.

But I do accept that the situation for rucks right now is pretty bad. I guess my opinion is formed from last year where Stanley and Blitz combined for a reasonably effective duo so if we can cover the hole left by Harry, which should be cheaper and easier, we're travelling ok. But if we're talking about sdk rucking we're talking about 2024 anyway. Who knows what the list looks like then?

Dekoning is the replacement for hendo long term not a ruck imo and if tsap and neale make it (big IF) they will need 3-4 years to be ready and both fort and stanley will be in their 30s and long gone. Unless we are supremely confident in sav as a frontline ruck this is why we need another afl ready ruck now so we dont have to use stanley and fort or take blitz away from other roles. Neale and tsap arent ready for that yet so ruck is our most obvious trade priority imo.

I think KPD is probably his most likely position if we are to predict where he plays at the moment. But he’d be a handy CHF as well - when Hawkins retires you could play Cameron deeper and have SDK as more that lead up key forward.

Makes that a little easier if Krueger comes on as the Henderson replacement. Though we’ll likely need another tall defender in time as well. I don’t think Henry is a long term proposition to play on the gorillas.

I might have had this discussion with you previously but we’ve always found a way to replace key defenders. Rucks, not so.

If we are super confident that the kids we have are only a year or two away.. and Darcy is not the guy or is too expensive ...

I guess we could try to do a Hickey type deal. But who would that player be?

It would have to be someone with know senior form to be a better option than Fort.

Rich will struggle to hold them all and Chol sort of looks like the type of ruck we like. Probably presents a bit like a cross between Blitz and Stanley.

Do we have enough indiginious players on our list. Their creativity is so instinctually , it makes football so much more enjoyable to watch. It probably would not hurt in trying to keep our other indig player more comfortable either.

Not sure who we could get , but I do love goal kickers.

...and so far, as much as Brisbane were getting all the aclaims about being miricle workers...so far no Cockatoo.
I dont care if a player is Asian or Kiwi or Indigenous back round tbh... doesn't make them any better or worst footballer...

Been hearing this for 10 years

rinse and repeat
Plus we got a midfielder in Dangerfield who won a brownlow in his first year... we havnt got in a free agent or drafted a player who is a star at that 24 or 25 age since who can play midfield. I just think this time it's getting really low, I like our young players every else, Henry in defence, Miers up forward, Parfitt is good .... But if Narkle goes, Constable goes, there isn't many young prodigy mids..
I would like to go after Parish, or Zac M and Hooper.

Parish is going to re-sign. Just a matter of weeks. Strike him off the list.

My biggest concern of our young midfielders we have at that age between 22-25 if Narkle & Constable go at the end of the year

Constable & Narkle are only 2 of a group of young midfielders, and not sure of the concern around Constable potentially leaving
- we know he tried to shop himself around just year, and there were reports of him doing so the year before also; so it's not like there hasn't already been opportunities for him to have moved on from the club
- he's played 5 games since the start of last year with 2 of those as the sub this year and was most recently omitted from the emergency list & replaced by a tall, even when the vast majority knew we'd be losing a key player from the guts

4th year on the list and Constable still seems a fringe player and becoming more of a break glass in an emergency type option, so I find it really hard to include him in the group of 22 - 25 year olds that could be making the core of our midfield in coming years

Looking at others in that age bracket we have the likes of Parfitt & O'Connor who've shown themselves as best 22, Simpson is right on the edge of the 22 & hasn't looked out of place when he's played over the past year.

Clark is another youngster who's shown good things but is also inconsistent; hopefully things click and we can see him take the next step. And Holmes hasn't looked too bad for a first year player

Obviously a bit to play out with Narkle, hoping he continues with his recent form over the back half of the season

Look I hope I'm wrong.... I really do... but I can't see Clark being at Geelong also next year.
The thing is with Constable, besides him coming through, there ain't many other. I'm really concerned whats around the corner. I'll say it again I hope I'm wrong but I don't think I will be

That’s my point, the fact we just trade in players to fill that spot
Not worried here, we wouldn’t have gone all in for Cameron if we’re going to go down the rebuild stage.
Will recruit players for years to come

Read this and thought “you’re about to be rucksplained that SDK didn’t play ruck as a junior so he’s not a ruck” and yep!

Lol. The same types are the ones who melt cos of where certain players are named on a Thursday night. They look at his under 18’s footy and think that gives them the answers for 5 years later. Watch his vfl footy. Watch the groups SDM trains in. He’s being taught to be a ruckman. Ask people inside footy and they’ll tell you, SDK’s agility, the fact hes elite below his knees for a man of his size, his vertical leap and size. He’s being groomed as a 10 year ruckman. And honestly, it’s a little the same as Blicavs. We ALL know he’s an AA defender, but guess where they play him ? Because as a ruckman, he gives the side far more. Same theory with SDK. But yep. The know it all’s will argue because of where he played his junior footy.
