StK. could have has Petrrica, Bontipelli and Naughton ... instead of McCartin, Billings and Clark/Coffield It hurts when the ball bounces the wrong way in multiple drafts

Imagine if the saints had nailed those 3 picks
Could well and truly have broken the flag draught

not sure why, as we traded our last r1 ( Cameron trade) for two seconds in this years draft.... They must see a lot of depth in this years draft to do that...
We had no choice.

Its an extreme case to strengthen your point, my simply is clubs rarely make mistakes on picks that early they discuss it over and over. Id like to have seen what we would have done in 2018. Pretty sure the word was Wells love Max King.

Lang instead of Jones hurts.

From memory the swans jumped in front of us. I maintain there is such a difference between 1 and 18 , that I dont feel they can both be called R1 picks. To me the worst call Wells made on the pick he had was Tenace , yet like what CE said, it was not a great draft.

I think it was more about gettinb the deal done , and trying to get something back for the R1's we were spending. If we loved this draft that much ... would we have trade our R1 out to get Holmes?

I have been a strong critic of Wells and first round failures. So let me state that first.

I guess in his favour is that his first round picks have rarely been in the top 10. This leaves him in no man’s land, in some ways - go for the conventional wisdom or grab who he rates will go in the 20s but he sees something in. His record has to stand on his own but I can see why he takes the approach he does.

Also, if you look back at the first round failures - Brown, Smedts, Thurlow and Lang - it’s not always easy to see what the obvious mistake was. Brown’s draft year was pretty good. In Smedts year, funnily enough it was Isaac Smith we missed but the rest were meh. Grundy is mentioned in Thurlow’s year but we were never picking a ruck with five already on our list. And in Lang’s year the counterfactual is someone like Dunstan, Acres or Impey.

I remain of the view that Wells has fallen short with these picks but dig a bit deeper and it’s not as bad as it looks.
Cockatoo - success or failure?

Who cares about Robertson we got a better player a year later with pick 20 Holmes

Big hopes for Holmes..but 22 spots to fill. Been a while since we have had a kid look as good as Robertson looked the other night. Having said that, Holmes is probably 24 months behind him and looks to have better foot skills and a heck of tank.

I think this year's crop is quite good.

In saying that I think we'll try trade up this though using our 3 second round picks. A

Anyone you really like?

I am not sure what we do with the picks. We probably do not need 4 players in the 30-45 range. Do we trade into next year, do we trade picks to team that need points. Do we trade the picks for more in system talent.

Maybe I will be more enthused with this years draft once they play the champs.

I know hindsight is 20/20 but that is just bad drafting. McCartin should never have been #1 in his draft, not many (any?) phantoms had him at #1. Billings was prob fair enough, but Clark and Coffield were both just good HBF’ers, not too 10 selections.

That’s what happens when you try to go needs-based with early picks.

I notice Scott made a "joke", if you can call it that, in his press conference about which of essendon's mids O'Connor would be sent to. The one "who's out of contract" was his response. Not sure exactly what to read in that. It was either some kind of slip where in the attempt to conceal his actual intentions for the game he ended up revealing other intentions re list management, or it was a genuine attempt to make fun of the speculation over players who are ooc, which in Parish's case may be far fetched? Who knows. About Narkle he also said that he hoped he'd be in the team for the next ten years or something. Easier to read the messaging there - be patient and stick with us.

Its an interesting situation that Bulldogs find themselves.

They get JUH with P1 last year. Have not played him , have no immediate need for him and now with their Father Son Sam Darcy ..they might have a kid rated in the top group again. Perhaps 2.

They need points to pay for him.

The have Dunkley who was looking for a role change..does he still want out.

How often does a side that is contention for a flag.. get the chance to draft two years in a row a kid that could be considered for the #1 pick.
Looks almost comparable to a GAJ/Hawkins father sons bounty

Considering what they have already, yep quite a bounty. Its more.. at least at draft value. Hawkins rated ..lets say P1..but GAjr was probably not even a a R1. I cant remember a side in contention for a flag getting a player rated so high in two consecutive years.

This season draft is ment to have alot of depth, basically any players that get picked in round 3 picks could easily be round 2 picks as the depth is very long

The greatest thing about the internet is that when you say something stupid someone will invest valuable time composing an eloquent explanation of why your particular opinion is garbage. Thanks for the research, ill walk myself out.
