Dawson Simpson is the one that still haunts me. Finally started to come good in 2013, dislocated his knee, still only 30 now, never the same again.
I remember the 6 or 7 weeks he was really up and running, Selwood was absolutely unstoppable with Simpson shoving it down his throat.

This bloke really impressed me in the few VFL games I saw this year. Deserves at least a rookie spot and would be an upgrade on Dahlhaus.

He has to be exceptional at that size... 170cm 70kgs... its quite small

If Clark goes, it must be another drafting disaster.
Our record in developing our 1st draft pick into a regular has been horrible.

2008 Mitch Brown R1
2009 Dan Menzel R1
2010 Billie Smedts R1
2011 Joel Hamling R2
2012 Jackson Thurlow R1
2013 Darcy Lang R1
2014 Nakia Cockatoo R1
2015 Ryan Gardiner R4
2016 Brandon Parfitt R2
2017 Lachlan Fogarty R2
2018 Jordan Clark R1
2019 Cooper Stephens R1
2020 Max Holmes R1

Parfitt is the only one that has come on.
Menzel was plain bad luck, but the rest...geez.
Ryan Gardiner R4, why is he on your list? Holmes will be a gun.

Should get someone other than Wells to pick under #20 (and ruckmen)

Apologies for the intrusion, however, I couldn't let this slip. The Peroni Gran Riserva Doppio Malto is a very nice beer.
I know this is getting a tad wanky, but I just saw one of the bar staff at a Brisbane pub wearing a tee from my old local brewery down in Reservoir (Hawkers) and it made me extremely happy.

Brown, Thurlow and Cockatoo had awful luck as well.

Nothing to do with short memories, more the evolution of the list. 5 years ago I would have agreed with you - we had a capable (and younger, quicker) midfield then and a better ruckman would have complimented that perfectly. In fact, you'll find at the time I was quite vocal about chasing a 'banger' type ruckman, to use Paul Roos' parlance (Darcy & Pruess were the two I suggested). Back then we were running with Zac Smith as our main ruckman with Stanley as backup with far less ruck experience than he has now.

Stanley and Blicavs have improved in the ruck plenty since then and I just don't think it's a huge issue anymore - at least much less of an issue than the midfielders. Sure they get beaten in there at times (Hickey, Darcy & Gawn the obvious examples in 2021 - 3 of the best performed this year), but name me a ruckman that doesn't. Ok, I'll give you Gawn.

And don't strawman me - I never said it needed to be one or the other. I said midfielders should be a higher priority right now than another ruckman, and you've done nothing to convince me otherwise.
It’s a funny thing building a team, it’s usually only the premier that gets all parts of the field in sync. For everyone else, one aspect is lagging behind. In 2021, We finally get our forward line and rucks doing well, and then we struggle with the midfield - as our players have gotten older and two vital cogs (Duncan and Danger) get injured. We get the midfield and backline firing and Cameron goes down for 6 weeks. We get the forward line back and Hendo has some issues and Stewart gets injured. All with the backdrop of lockdowns and quarantine. Couldn’t catch a break this year. At the same time for the overall team strategy - recruiting is trying to plug holes, development is trying to get players ready to fill holes.

I can’t really see them getting the age and experience profile right and balancing our strengths across the field for a while. Takes a lot of Effort to change direction or even adjust in a bigger way.

Not a fan of the club risking their pick 7 on Joel back in the day? Or pick 15 on Varcoe?

Joel was potentially no 1 if it wasn’t for the knee. Risk worth taking. The others though, not worth the risk. None of them were good enough as juniors to risk high picks on.

He was a character. I remember the players visiting the ford factory for the fg-x release, and he gets in the xr8, starts it up and revs the absolute beejesus out of it. Everyone cracks up and the plant manager next to him goes “well that one’s going to need a new engine”. He had this massive grin on his face. Everyone cracked up.

Smedts also had bad injuries and was never the same player after that.

With Hamling it was just that we had too many tall backmen. He has turned out to be a good player but has been dogged by injuries the past two years.
Good but not great tbh. He was never getting a game in front of Taylor, Hendo and Lonergan at the time.

Didn't Scarlo call Smeldts the dumbest person he knew

Maybe spell his name right if you want to cast those kind of aspersions.

He made a dumb mistake when he was 21, with Josh Caddy:

He sounds intelligent enough to me:

pretty common knowledge at the time, don't think Scarlo tried to hide it

In a handicapped comp with razor thin margins between winning a losing these stats over any game plan or coaching issue is probably what’s cost us a flag. (That and being the only club trading for RFA)

If just 1 or 2 of those players turned into a top 50-100 player in the league we probably would have pinched a flag since 2011. Esp the 08-14 period who are in their prime now.

It’s an awfully complex issue but nobody rags on Wells like they do Chris Scott.
