Who win the ball in the middle?
Guthrie, Parfitt, Holmes and Duncan would likely rotate through the middle

Narkle has re-signed and would think he'll get chances next year and his best spot is in the guts - the bigger question is if he can lift the defensive aspect of his game, because we know he can win the ball but can he pressure an opponent

Brown needs a certain delivery style out of the midfield to work, and we don't provide that.

Besides, Brown might not have wanted to live away from Melbourne.

Brown only played a hand full of games.
Which might helped him.
This year.

I’d have to look at what we traded away and where we may have been likely to fall to if we hadn’t topped up. Crystal ball sort of stuff. But I think you are right, we wouldn’t have fallen to bottom 4 regardless. There still may have been some decent kids taken from 8-12 though which may have been in our range maybe.

We only once traded a top 10 pick through danger (crows used it on milera who hasnt done much)..outside of that all of our trades involved picks 15 or later..even cameron. Theres a huge huge difference between trading pick 20ish and pick 5.

I thought at the time why do the Dees need Jackson .
But Gawn is 29 now ..
Jackson looks to be helping Gawn ...

What will be interesting is to see if they keep Jackson

With the talk over recent weeks of Melbourne being interested in Cerra, Fremantle said ok but we want Jackson. Now we know that Melbourne is out of the running for Cerra, but have Fremantle started to plant an idea on Jackson's mind that if he wants to return to his home state that there's genuine interest from one of the teams

Could be an interesting time if he doesn't re-sign early next year since he is out of contract at seasons end

Jackson looks to be number one ruck in about 3 years at Melbourne.

Unsure if Jackson will wanna go home .
Some do, some don't.

Of course. What I’m saying is if we had invested in kids rather than trade/FA for Tuohy, Henderson, Rivers, Ablett, Rohan, Dahl, and more recently Cameron and Higgins we’d have likely dropped a bit. Would it have been enough to secure some quality kids?

Edit - didn’t include Dangerfield because that trade you’d have done every day of the week.

Yeah, but if you get Roughy and Franklin you are beyond set.

Worth looking at the best key forwards in the game at the moment acc. to the Coleman medal count. Hawkins was F/S but would have gone top three, ditto Daniher. Riewoldt was p12, Dixon and Bruce were Academy picks, Franklin p5, McKay p10, Ben King p6, Naughton p9. The only smoky in that was Tex Walker.

If you want a genuinely excellent key forward, you must have a high pick to draw on.

Walker was a prelisted player

Yeah they’ve benefitted from being sh*t..for a very long time. I don’t like that approach.

Look, if its guaranteed to lead to an era that brings in 3-4 flags then the super tank is probably justified.
But there are no guarantees- Carlton bottomed out a few years before the dee's tanking effort, and then they did it again ten years later with nothing to show for it. bloody hard to lift the cup.

Maybe we should just deliberately tank games for the next few years and have the AFL protect us to load up on the top kids

worked for Melb and no one talks about it

Give us 5 top 3 picks please!
Struggle to argue against those 5 picks setting up their premiership really.
Obviously you need more than just picks, you need to be lucky and pick the kids who end up becoming genuine stars, for every Oliver there's a Gibbs or Kreuzer.

Melbourne only got that by being absolute sh*t for many years plus dodgy afl compo (see frawley) thats not a plan to follow and we would be silly to try. Even in our bad years we wont drop enough to get top 5 picks..we just have to maximise what picks we will have.
Spot on Pure... I was going to write my own post about it, but your on the money. If we finish just out of the 8 or be middle of the range. We just need to hope and our recruitment ream selects the correct players...

No doubt Scarlett sees it that way. I would say Scarlett looks to be the one less capable of change though and is probably being called on it. Scarlo has had a massive d50 exit problem for years and at the same time has had a rebounding hbf kid who was tracking very well early in his career that he hasn't given opportunities to. Even if you don't think Clark is the solution, you have to say that our recent defensive success is down to other line coaches making changes to support him.

My guess is Scarlett was sacked for good reason

I'm hoping it started with Scott saying enough is enough with the 'Misfits' & 'Wolfpack', that the cliques needed to be disbanded and a rethink of the current approach being taken by all

I did joke that Scott told Scarlett that Kolodjashnij would be put on the trade table which didn't go down well

But could have been more simple and just a case that someone said, "what we're doing isn't working, we need to change our thinking, change our approach, come to the pre-season with a fresh mind and that there'll be 22 spots up for grabs come round 1 next season. If you not open to that then you need to consider if this is the right place for you."

I'd say that Knights was already gone regardless of our preliminary final result - he signed a 3-year deal just days after our season was over, so would think that that deal had been in the works for a little while and all parties were waiting for our season to be over before it was announced

Maybe for Enright & Scarlett they did have some thinking to do about whether they could be involved in something of a rebuild and a rethink of their approach

Just to put the resource gap between us and Melbourne into an easy to understand form. We pulling some Oakland As level sh*t to get where we are.

The gap in total spend is equivalent to 6 pick 7s, I used pick 7 as the comparison as it is the highest pick we a have used to acquire a player on our list.

They've almost spent the same value in trades to acquire player and almost double at the draft.

MelbourneGeelongM spend to G spend Ratio
Drafted23453123211.9
Traded530166250.8
Total28754189461.52
Trade to Draft ratio0.230.54

Note: this is for player that are currently on their list and doesn't include the large numbers of Trengoves and Toumpas that they burnt to get here. They've burnt more early picks then we've had

Also last year our Cockatoo to Melbourne Future R3 to Pick 33 trades couldn't have gone any better, thanks GC, who continue their trend of giving up free DVI to anyone who asks politely
Brilliant post

A lot of talk about getting THOSE Top 5 or even Top 10 picks to set yourselves up for the future.
Last night i watched the game with a mate of mine who's a BIG Saints supporter.
Every time BONT touched the ball he yelled "...and We took Billings!!"
Every time PETRACCA touched the ball he yelled "...and We took McCartin!!"
Every time Naughton touched the ball he yelled Yep u guessed it "...and We took Coffield!!"
Beware what you ask for.
As those high picks could turn into another decade of what if's, should've, could've & would've.
Cheers Boys.

The commentary and comparisons to Melb are ridiculous. On top of finishing in the bottom 5 about 6-7 years in a decade they have had AFL compo and Free Agent compo. Good luck to them that’s the system working.

Some of the Draft capital is circular but since 2010 they have had 16 picks under 12 to draft or trade with and matched a bid at #7 on Viney with a late 20s pick so thats 17 prime picks. On top of a further 11 picks btw 12 and 25.

They have had the draft capital to spend on picks or players like Bill Gates. The chances of bottoming out for two years nailing 2 picks and winning a premiership are about as rare as seeing a pink unicorn on Morrabool St

Don't forget my boy Constable 😃 he will win his fair share of his own ball in centre clearance #justyouwaitandsee #Constablewillpowereveryonewrong

Weird then that Rabs didn’t even go close to mentioning that.

I agree we should go to the draft with our picks this year and not be trading them for players, to improve our draft hand though - yes.
I would have thought that lamenting picking up 30+ year old players who are near spent, would have indicated the need for other options like the draft, or at least picking up players who are around the 25-27 mark.

I agree that the game plan cannot compete with the run and attack of the Dogs and Dees. But maybe the slow game plan is the best fit for (and the result of having) an aging midfield that simply does not have the ability to run and gun with the best young midfields anyway.

I can understand why the club recruited these older players. We appeared to be in the flag window.

And yes, I agree, I don't think this current list will take us any further.
The ruck has been an issue since Ottens' retirement/aging midfield/ no run and carry from defense/2 good KPF but all other forwards don't really impress me (maybe Close).

On the positive side, DeKoning, Holmes and Stevens look like they will be players. But Covid also has not been a help for the development of players in the VFL the last few years.

Billings is a tease .

He will go under the radar, it's good no one wants to sign him.. He will be a regular in Geelong AFL side 😎
If Constable is on a list next year and the line was +/- 10 matches, I'd comfortably say less than 10 matches

If Constable is on a list next year and the line was +/- 10 matches, I'd comfortably dayy less than 10 matches

He needs to work on giving the ball to players in better spots .
Hopefully our new mid coach can help him.

He will never be a Oliver.

But I'd settle for j.lyons mk2.

Not asking for much....🙃😀
