Hipwood contract hasn't backfired they are just paying a spud way to much for to long

Hopper at this stage( may come good) looks like he will end up a complete failure due to his body

Go on the Brisbane board and tell them that, they want to drop him :tearsofjoy:

Even if i didn't use Hopper and Hipwood....there's Grundy and Treloar and Shiel and Tom Scully and Kurt Tippett.

I could keep going?

I would prefer not to discuss with that delusional bunch who told me last year Miers wouldn't get a game for them

I mean i want guys to get their generational wealth because once they are retired the clubs are 99% most likely not going to look after you and if they got a career ending injury are those clubs going to pay for all the medical bills and future rehab? Probably not.

But if a player is committed to the cause that's a great thing.

I would hope most Cats players understand that:

Hey, you're still getting 75% of the Bag....you're just leaving the club open to flexibility in the squad so we can bring in multiple star talents or retain our homegrown talent so the squad stays competitive and can push for Finals/Big box office matches which increases exposure and opens you up outside football opportunities from media/sponsorship for your brand.

If you want to take 100% of the bag...no one will blame you. Especially if you want to leave for Home/Family reasons (Kelly, Jordan Clark) or if some club is dumb enough to pay you F%%% off level money (Ablett and GC)
We just aren't going to do that.

Players know where we stand and what we stand for. Joel said it best.

"You don't come to the Geelong Football Club to go to work for money, you come for the experience. I've loved every part of that."
Players are well looked after beyond the initial financial contract , even GAS and Co were looked after post retirement with funds and job/business ccontacts and opportunities . Even the rookies bills, rent and food are assisted with via the club from what I have heard .

So taking a little bit under for higher exposure and a winning contract which helps with all these opportunities for both their careers and post retirement would be the smart advice over taking a bit more money elsewhere to start all over again in a team structure and environment that may not be the best for your career….not to mention the added stress that being a big signing might bring with a drop in team and personal form.

I don't expect the unestablished guys to take the hit. But if you sign a long term deal, you're not just a player, you are a key stakeholder, you are the current iteration of the club. The club is spending a lot more than just a wage to the player, it is building its whole infrastructure around and to protect you. In our case the club has repeatedly bet the against future for the present. It has worked because we had near total buy in, back after 07 and again in the last 5 years. I'm not expecting players to take a 25% hit. With a 14 million cap and a base wage of 100k, A 10% hit gets us Cameron and Smith. If we're competing to makes sense to hold on the oldies for an extra year. They more then make their money back. I think that was the difference between 2012-2016 and 2022-2024. I think we tolerated from Tuohy what we wouldn't from Bartel.

The collective bargaining agreement has provisions for players whose careers end via injury.

I am i was gobsmacked myself ..

To be fair it was mainly a few of them stating that the rest said they would love him

Ahhh good i'd be worried if the best goal assist player in the comp couldn't get a game over such vaunted stars like

checks notes

Harry Sharp, Kai Lohmann or Noah Answerth

hugh laurie facepalm GIF

Don't mind Lohmann but not over Miers

It's not about Lohmann's talent...it's the fact that people exist on Bigfooty that actually legitimately think some dumbass stuff.

Gryan Miers who was in contention for the All Australian squad last year and is already getting that talk this year in their minds wouldn't get a game before Lions players who are on the verge of playing VFL every week or already do.

Let he who did not rate George Horlin-Smith cast the first stone

If that is the dumbest thing you read today on the internet it just means that you don’t venture very far.

As you can see from my time active on this profile compared to the low amount of comments/posts ive made, i don't have time to see all the dumb shit that goes on with BigFooty.
I have a pregnant partner, a job and stuff to do lol

You would have to think with the poor list North has had since LDU has been around combined with the cap floor of 95% he would have been getting paid a fair chunk more than he normally would as one of the only decent players for them.
So money may not be a huge factor but who knows.
Money is always a huge factor. You can never have enough, especially when your peak lifetime earning capacity is from a short term career in your 20’s-early 30’s.

I really hope that Stengle is appropriately remunerated in this contract. The guy is one of the top small forwards in the AFL which in modern football is a critical position. I’d love to know that he would finish his career with us but also in a manner where he’s set up for life.
The club is not silly. They know what he is worth and they will make sure he is looked after accordingly.

Pay that man

One thing that’s changed over Scott’s time, from moving on Legends to now embracing an older list with an emphasis on recovery and longevity. ‘Yeah you might get 10-20% less but you also might get a great lifestyle and an extra 1-3 years you may not otherwise have. Tuohy, Hawk being the standard bearers.

That is a tough sell though. Would you give up money in the current contract in the hope that you will make it up down the track? When you are one injury away from this contract being your last?

I am sure that Hopper is happy that he took the money when it was available, if he was on a 2 yr contract right now it would likely have cost him about $3m over the course of his career.

I will never begrudge a player for taking the bag when it is in offer.

We’ve got a history of doing it. Now we can point to extending careers as an incentive. Good luck to players who want the 100 of what they’re ‘worth’ though, particular JH. I’m not a fan of 7 year deals for anyone but the best. Even then it’s a stretch.

I hate the long term contracts, they only make sense for absolute superstar players. Ie. top 10 player in the league type players that don’t have injury histories.

You give those contracts to Cameron, Bont, that type of player. You don’t give them to Hopper or A McGrath.
