I think Conway's status of contracted or not contracted makes near zero different on our plans to aquire another ruck, or his trade value in general.
Yeah, he's arguably not worth much given his injury history. So in this case it may be more about us having a bet each way - hold him in case we can get him right and see if he can help us get a deal done at the same time. But I thought it was worth mentioning the logic of having a player on the list so they can be traded as presumably that would sometimes be a consideration.

I didn't understand this logic until recently either. But someone (might have been Dangerfield in an interview) mentioned the other day that one of the reasons clubs will offer a player a contract in this circumstance is because then they essentially become an 'asset' that they can trade. No idea about these rumours but that logic at least could explain the element that you're questioning.
If Conway is on a $2 contract, maybe a club could be fooled into thinking he is an asset.

Yeah, sure. I was only really referring to the question about "why a club would extend a contract only to offer the player up to other clubs?" - and suggesting that there could be a logic to it in some cases.

I don't disagree with your logic in general. We can see how keeping a player contracted can give even a mediocre player some trade value, if there is a demand.

In this particular case I don't believe it to be the case. If Conway's contract isn't heavily performance based, he'd be a liability. I think we contracted him cause we still had hopes that he could deliver for us. But all we've got is another year lost to injury and with our season's hope resting on a mid 30s Stanley

Yeah, I agree. And I love Conway and his potential. But gee how good would a really good ruckman in their prime be right about now!

Would love if we could keep Conway and find someone else. But I trust the club to make good decisions at the end of the day.

Not sure if it has been mentioned here, and while I don't watch "Gettable" someone on reddit does a write up about the show, and there was this fun little tidbit...

"Clubs around the comp are coming for Geelong's Tom Atkins, talks for an extension are ongoing though".

I'd laugh if someone poached him

Note, I don't want him to go but he'd be an ideal fit at Richmond as they transition and could see him stepping straight into the VC role behind Nank

WCE are another that could use a player with his approach

Surely JUH gets pushed out of the Doggies for a packet of chips at the end of the year unless he turns it around.

The guy might be a lost cause... Not fully sure.

The most recent videos would be enough for me to look at other options. …unless its all part of a grand plan to get out of the Dogs cheaply , I think he may be one of those guys who are better away from the attention afl brings

Yeah I'd say that if you pick him up without seeing evidence of his behaviour changing first then expect no change in behaviour

I'd only think about it if Tassie offered their 2nd or 3rd overall pick...(if they come in 2026)
As he'd be right up their ally when setting up a club with character and culture.
But what i've heard from his family he ain't going anywhere unless the money was life changing... and i mean life changing.

Watching the clip shown on Footy Classified last night, I don't see how moving to another team within Vic would provide a significant enough change of environment if he's not already making those changes himself

A move interstate and away from his known environment, temptations etc, might be the catalyst to get things on track for him and reignite a career which currently looks like stalling

This is the clip from last night for those who hasn't haven't seen it

This thread is always a weird place every season.
23 pages in the last week and as with every year there's little of substance to talk about at length until October.
As Garry Lyon once famously said on SEN morning breakfast once to a caller complaining to stop talking about trade rumours… he said

“ I have been doing this caper for a very long time on air, and I can tell you for a fact, nothing gets people going and interested like trade gossip”

When is Tassie's first draft... Is there even a year locked in yet?

You'd think knowing that would be pretty important for list management considering you can trade picks into the future.

One would think he would be an ideal addition to Tas starting their VFL setup before they come in. If he got a rainmaker offer id think most would be happy for him and wish him all the best. I struggle to watch him in yellow peril black sash jumper.

FWIW i think they are years away... the AFL stubbornness or pig headed ness take ya pick... in stipulating a dome stadium to be built at 1.5 billion dollars was and is comical when u realise they've been playing in the apple isle for a decade without any concerns for the teams that travel down there.
It's a lemon until a government be it a state or federal want to win votes and bankroll it.

It’s a short career if he can make some serious money I wish him the best he has given everything he has had to the club he doesn’t owe it anything

If the AFL actually cared about the game Tassie would already be playing

Spot On. Another state they've fluffed on... they (AFL)are still reeling from walking away from the ACT, a Canberra team would've been ideal when they needed the brass balls to pull the trigger many moons ago now.
Imagine a National comp with Canberra in especially if we got in first and entrenched AFL before the NRL swept in... and a Tassie team. A 20 team comp. Now that would wreck ya weekends lol.

So much class from Scott in that clip
