You don't think we have enough pieces forward and back to just focus on the middle 3-4 players letting us down?

On par, even if we find willing targets, that's about 6 first round picks worth of expenditure. We just don't have the trading power. That's without considering Cameron, Stewart and Danger are hugging the wall. We have zero in reserve to step up and mitigate that cost somewhat. I'm a member of the cult of Wells but if we dodge this then his stature will be converted into something not too different that the mausoleum of Lenin.

The problem is that unlike with Bowes, I'm not sure Oliver is exactly one you can smooth that contract over an extra couple of years - he'll be 33 come the end of his contract, and not sure there'll be too many teams looking to hold onto him until his 35 just to not take as big of a hit
That's not the only problem

Well, bullet dodged regarding Oliver. Thank you, Mr Brad Green. Did I read someone on here still wanted him over Rowell recently? Wowsers.

Let's grab Worpel as a RFA, hope they don't match (unlikely), less salary and no identified baggage / problems

This is bizarrely negative.

A week ago we beat one of the premiership favourites. They had 1 player with under 40 games experience. We had 7.

Fast forward 3 years and we have a lot of players who should be a lot better than they are now.

Danger has had a ripping start to the season but the rest of the old guys have been average to poor.

If we can add a genuine gun like Butters or what Reid should become and then get natural progression from Holmes, O'Sullivan, Dempsey, O Henry, SDK, etc we should be clearly better in 3 years than we are today.

Eh that's if you rate Hawthorn. I don't.

I'm not so sure about how much growth as a group our guys have relative to their contemporary cohorts. Obviosuly they have room to go but so does everyone else.

On the weekend we had a midfield of Stanley, Holmes, Smith and Atkins and ?. That is objectively an awful midfield.

We need to bring in six near elite players in three years to replace the attrition we're about to have and fill the gaps we failed to fill. In order to be a team that can challenge for top four and maybe more.

Butters would be unbelievable good, Reid is a fantasy. Both is delusional, we need both or equivalents.

I'm not sure... Could happen like this
Geelong pay for 65% and Melbourne pay for 35% and he stays on his agreed salary
Especially if Melbourne finish bottom 6 and won't be contender for years

It's possible but if Melbourne have to pay that they will probably just keep him and I doubt we want to pay 65 % of 1.3mil and rising.

I just can't fathom...I wish him all the best but bringing him in, even with the Dees paying half his salary and us trading a late pick would be a disaster for us and end in tears..
There seems to be those folk who's current vision of Oliver is that of 2021/2022 player who was a damaging midfielder, and don't necessarily seem to have been paying as much attention to his current form

There's so many validations I seem from them including:
  • Geelong will get him back to his best
  • His heart isn't in it at Melbourne, but will be at Geelong
  • He doesn't want to be at Melbourne
  • We'll only have to give up a 2nd round pick
  • He's worth the salary

Etc etc etc

The reasons some are using to chase him are what I'd call red flags - if he's checked out now, how do we know he'll suddenly turn it around at Geelong (or any other club)? He's got a contract that's going to set him up for life and not like he's got a future deal to be playing for

You really think that?

We've lost a lot of very good to GOAT players in the past few years and have still managed to contend deep into finals while bringing in young players who look likely from a mix of backgrounds.

The rebuild has already been happening for some years, and it doesn't look to me like failing.

Not too many pages ago this thread was thinking positively of bringing in Worpol, really Worpol, that is how thing are atm.

We do and we don't. The quality of the comp has never been more shit and tassie coming in will probably exacerbate that issue. We need to improve the list particularly in the future but we don't need to improve it as much as people think we need to work on our fitness and consistency as much as the list with anything.

I reckon the Dogs would just about give us 2x second-rounders to get rid of him if they could.

They will just rip up his deal if afl allow.

Audacious but I don't see a viable alternative other than to be bold

I think it is harder then ever to stockpile elite talent. Extra teams aside, clubs are a lot more savy with their recruitment. While you don't need the same level of talent as you did back in the 16 team competition, it is harder then ever to get that "elite" elite talent. When was the last time we drafted an 18 year old of that kind. Might actually be 2006.

Nick Riewoldt and Campbell Brown both made little jibes about Cotton On over the past few weeks. Very unprofessional, but I wouldn't expect anything different from an intellectual midget like Brown, but thought Riewoldt would be better than that.
I think it is a wider societal malaise.. (spurned on by Social Media).

If we didn't win, the other party cheated. The other party is even criticised for not winning the "right" way (weak, woke, globalist, anti-<insert your Country|State|Religion> etc.). Trying to win by the book, being fair & balanced is a sign of "weakness" now. The "thrill of the hunt" (where else, but on Social Media) is clouding our collective judgements.

And despite the outside noise, in the last 10 years or more, we have only traded in 2 stars, Danger and Cameron. Bailey Smith isn’t in their league yet.
Speaking of the outside noise, with us, it is not the profile or marketability (collectively "bragging rights"), but the fact that the recruit fulfils a list need. Wells/Mackie are only guilty of keeping the main thing.. the main thing! The unfair advantage we have is Focus.

There's a time in every Supporter Page's lifetime, when it is more about what the Opposition wants us to do than what we want to do ourselves. The BorgTrolls have assimilated.
Note: Not a comment of Worpel's potential poaching per se, but on the Supporter FB page.
