I’m probably the odd one out but Rowell would be my guy. He’s ready to go. Compliments our existing group. He would make our midfield complete.
Plus, he's got the ducking technique working well

I'm with you on that. Ball use is incredibly suspect and I'm not sure his defensive game is that strong. Also has no versatility. Recruiting him would make me nervous.
I can see both sides.

Rowell's decision making and skill level are below Holmes and Smith, who are a bit hit and miss in that area. Those two have incredible running power and athletic attributes to hurt opposition teams. Rowell doesn't. He can veer into 2025 Clayton Oliver areas with his hurt factor.

I can also see how he could be great as a bull who gets the footy 30 times and (mostly) dishes it off to our many damaging players. In the short term, he would help our flag thrust before Dangerfield, Cameron and Stewart retire. Long term, we would lock in a contested animal for many years.

As with anything, it depends on the price. I'm really glad I'm not a list manager.

Order of preference:

1. Reid.
Generational talent and match winner that would win us finals off his own boot. I honestly see him as a Dustin Martin level talent with the caveat: he develops at a professional club under an elite system. He’d work at cats.

2. Butters.
He’s a top 10 player in the AFL. Below Reid but higher than Rowell for his skill set, hurt factor. He’s more precise than smith/homes.

3. Rowell
Not a generational talent like Reid and not as good a footballer as butters. However… he suits our current mid group more than butters. He’s the inside bull we desperately need, butters is too small. Our mid group would collectively be better with Rowell vs butters.

Do essentially Reid is the one we need to go for at the top of the tree but if it doesn’t work (and looks like it won’t whilst he’s contracted), although I rate butters higher than Rowell in isolation, Rowell would be the better fit with Holmes and smith. A bull + 2 x runners. However part of me prefers the more talented player which is why I have him second.

Im starting to wonder if we actually need to invest in a star midfielder and what the expense will be to the rest of the side. From what I can see bar maybe the Carlton match our midfield gets the job done and often dominates star midfield sides. We definetely need a ruck and another key forward would be handy.
But our two Irish boys MOC and Mullin are units. Atkins is at his best. Smith and Holmes are beasts. Then you wonder about players like Mannagh, Dempsey, Clohesy running through there in the future. Maybe we just need to let our midfield grow up and not overdo it.

Would still love Reid though lol

Atkins is closer to 30 and given his frenetic, physical style probably doesn't lend itself to longevity.

Dangerfield is a midfield ace up our sleeve at the minute but we won't have that for much longer.

It'd be prudent to pursue another mid regardless, but we also have a young mid who may not return to playing as well as Cam Guthrie being much closer to the end than the beginning.

It seems prudent to have gun mids that are adept at kicking goals. As good as Smith and Holmes are, goals are not prolific, so whichever mid we can trade for, or develop within, that loves a goal is my wish.

I completely agree. I think he's the best bang-for-buck, he's an excellent complement to Holmes and Smith, and he looks like a great personality fit. Getting Rowell would also leave us cap space to move in the future.

Reid seems like high reward, but high risk. He reminds me a lot of Dane Swan - a burst power athlete with extraordinary natural gifts, whose preparation and professionalism can be pretty dicey. It worked out for Swanny, but it was very much touch and go for a while, and if it weren't for Malthouse, he may have been lost to footy before his career even took off.

I think what is helping us with the mids we have is our coaches. The suns game is a great example we picked a team and tactics to combat the suns. Having defensive mids shut down the suns playmakers worked really well in the conditions.

But I think there are some limitations to that and a stronger midfield group would give us more options. We’ve got two young midfield stars and good players at either end of the ground.
It’s possible we can find some of the other pieces on the list but if we can add some more star quality why wouldn’t we.

This is why I brought up Rowan Marshall recently.
The guys has family links down this way and has had interest joining us in the past.
The only problem is he is contracted.

Butters is clearly the best of the 3 now (and Reid should be the best over time). But Rowell suits our needs best and that's the key.

I love all three. However, in the immediate term with consideration of factors such as ability, trade cost and team need, Rowell might be my pick. He would bring leadership and the stable persona desired by GFC in its leaders which cannot be understated and can be nurtured as we plan a transition beyond Danger and Stewart. He has developed under the adversity associated with playing with GCSFC. Under the GFC development program (with an abundance of available mentors), I think (obviously as a biased supporter) Rowell has a raised ceiling in terms of strengths and versatility in his game beyond what we see right now which will complement our existing structure and system. I think he could be trained to be a more threatening resting midfielder in the forward line as well. Love this hypothetical discussion on all three potential options, though.

He eats grass.

Reid reminds me of early Dusty, who I thought was already great. He is meant to have freakish talent and match-winning capacity, but it seems he is unattainable for us. Could see him really blossoming at Geelong, as could the other 2. We could not entice Boak, a Falcon/Geelong product- can't see us getting Butters. Rowell would be a great get.
