At what point can we pick up Mellor as Cat B, how far does he have to slide without a bid?

If he gets through the ND-so if say theres only 55 picks with passes he has to get to 55 without a bid-then we can automatically prelist him as a cat b before the rookie draft the next day. That's the risk we will take the risk is someone cuts our lunch like we did with Hoffman.

Really hope Lindsay falls to us. Not concerned about his deficiencies - his kicking, decision making and poise are elite. Sometimes we focus too much on what a player can’t provide rather than what he can.

Lindsay reminds me a fair bit of cam guthrie-yes hes slower but in the sense that he does everything well and his leadership is very high-just looks like a natural footballer. Yes we probably would prefer a big bodied mid for team balance but I feel hes plug and play like Guthrie was and in a weak draft im happy with a safe pick. That said i can see us bidding on the gc guys or Williams and doing a few differenr things.

Mellor is the most under rated player in this draft class. Nairn is being talked about as a top 10 pick. Very similar player. Robey has a much higher ceiling and rapid rate of improvement but statistically is not much better (still think he is the best player in the draft though). Mellor has stepped up at every level. Really hope we grab him with our 2nd pick

I rate mellor too but to use 40 on him would be a waste when you could use 40 elsewhere and then match a bid at 50 with junk pick 70 or whatever.
The fact that we have only opened 2 list spots tells me we either dont rate mellor and wont take him or we do rate him but our intel is he will get through the ND so we are prepared to risk it and cat b him.

If we miss on Mellor because we gave a contract to Wilkshire I'll be furious

It's a risk unless you trade out 19 (but we wont get a future 1st for it which is tbe problem re 2 in 4) and use 40 and then match mellor late.
Im surprised we didnt delist Wiltshire to open the 3rd list spot for mellor if theres a late bid.
If no bid you could always have passed the last pick, run with 37/5 and picked Wiltshire back up in the rookie draft anyway.
I do hope we havent got the strategy wrong on this-hopefully mellor doesnt get bid after our 2nd pick.

He would have to go undrafted at the ND

If we take 2 picks without one of them being Mellor, he'd be free to go to any other club during the draft

St Kilda had a list spot avail when the bid come in... they just elected to let him go (they mustn't have overly rated him).

Actually, come to think of it... didn't St. Kilda commit to taking Hoffman and then let him go?

They getting a rep for telling porky-pies to potential recruits... Hi Aleer.

What a club... I wish upon them the hell of 1x flag and nearly 30x spoons within a 150-year span.... Oh wait!

That's incorrect. When they took boxshall and a couple of other players at the back end including Patrick said they filled their 38 senior list and they had no list spot to then match our bid. They thought he would get through to the end of the draft so they could rookie him (which they had a spot for). That's the risk we take with mellor.

Never heard of him but just took a look... Geez, he has something about the way he moves for a guy that size... also has bulk and isn't just a skinny/tall, fast kid.

He doesn't even look like he is going fast (looking at his legs) but can maintain a gap and go from a stand-still to creating space in a few steps (rate it).

Being able to get past guys going left and straighten, even for a small player is a rare thing, and he does it multiple times in below vid.

Love the look of his movement... No idea about if he can accumulate, or just play in general... but I'm sold on his frame/movement alone. Upside looks to be there for sure.

Surely a player with those attributes doesn't get into the 40's in a weak draft.

George Steven's height, but with breakway ability. What am I missing here?

Youtube link: Is impressive.

Based on what I saw there I would take him at 19. I’ve watched all the top 30 odd players closely and he is right up there.

Interesting
If ess trade 21 27 and 30 for 9 then how are they matching Sweid or el achar without going into deficit.

And 25 and a future 2nd isnt enough for 11 and I doubt they would give up all of 25 26 and f2 for 11?
Carlton would be better off trying to trade 9 or 11 for Adelaide's future 1st/st kildas future 1st then trying to trade back in with one of the future 1sts after they match Dean.

In this draft I would be fine with 25 and a f2nd from the dons

That shows that this draft isnt rated. 20s pick and a future 20s is poor for 9.
I think they will do 21 27 and 30 for maybe 9 and 43 or something.
I wonder if essendon will try and offer 6 and 9 to wce for 2?

Im not sure who will miss out. But we will add Bruhn and Worpel to our team.
The more Midfielders we have in our side, the better chance we can go all the way..
We rely so heavily on 3 midfielders in Atkins, Smith And Holmes.
You look at all the past winners 🏆 they have 6-8 players that can go in and out of our Midfield, we rely heavily on our 3

Really good article on Rongdit here. Would be happy to take him as a rookie/cat B and allow him to get some tutelage under Bews.

Seems a great kid with a fantastic attitude. The athletic traits are there, and so is the drive.

Our development can take care of the rest, and we need a genuine lockdown small long-term.

I like him but the problem is the cat b spot is likely to go to mellor-unless we make one of them cat a and one of them cat b (in that scenario we just take no other rookie picks).

Makes sense. They clearly dont rate this draft and have been topping up with mature age guys plus rioli retired so they need a small fwd. Their rookie list is full though so they will be taking him at 49 or whatever back end ND pick they have so we would have to take him at 40 (and hope mellor then doesnt get bid on after that) if we want him. Same as how freo etc wanted mannagh but we got in just ahead.
