2025 AFL Draft and Trade Dates:

Fri Oct 3 - Fri Oct 10: 2025 Free Agency Period
Mon Oct 6 - Wed Oct 15: 2025 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period
Wed Nov 19 - Thu Nov 20: 2025 Telstra AFL Draft

100% the least hyped draft for many years.
So few 'live' picks makes for an extremely dull event. The AFL's love affair with feathering the nests of their pet projects really has turned the whole draft into a sad and pathetic charade. When the Suns are left lamenting the grief of potentially not being able to snare all five of their glowing academy prospects in one draft, you know the system really is both profoundly broken and inherently farcical.

Most clubs think its a pretty weak draft as you can see by how many are taking minimum picks. Next years is better.

Okay fellow Cat fans. Based only on the ocasional visit to this thred, this is my hope for this draft:

Round 1 Riley Onley Please Wellsey, no one sub 185 cm or slow.
Round 2 Jessy Mellor Seems worth taking while we are in control
A Rookie Hunter Holmes Athlete and his brother goes ok coming from a not quite mainstream background.
B Rookie Ben Rongdit Might be the best of the 4 if he can get his body right.

I expect Jessy and Ben to get a run. We will see.

Go Cats.

Is it confirmed then we only have picks 19 and 40?
Loaded up on everywhere other than mids lately I hope we pick up a couple to start developing

Yes only 2 senior list picks, one cat a rookie and one cat b rookie.
We will take a bigger number of draft picks next year.

This is one boring lacklustre build up to a draft...
If the AFL don't do something soon, the draft will be dead. The draft is so heavily compromised by guaranteed academy selections, taken by clubs at a place nowhere near commensurate to where they finished, that the original concept of it is practically dead.

If you are not a super-crap team that has also stock-piled a bunch of picks, like Richmond last year and Essendon/Carlton this year, or you're one of the clubs with a guaranteed gun pick from an academy, it's a fairly pointless exercise.

The AFL already have done something. And if you ask me, it looks heavy handed. But we'll see.

100% this

They have barely done anything. It's still a very lop sided affair with the 10% discount.

If we bid on williams at 19, GCS can match him with pick 34 +42... With some change...

In what world is 34 + 42 worth 19?? Not even close.

The AFL treats it like a childrens video game. They need to be realistic about what is actually worth a draft pick being bid on.

Next year you can only match with 2 first round picks.

You cant offer 'say' pick 9, 48, 51, 57 to match.

independent of the number of picks it is the format that makes it dull. Letting picks go through at the natural pace would fix half of the issue. The tension would be a lot more natural when the club actually does take the full time to either make a trade or argue over a player. From a viewer perspective all of that is obfuscated where every pick takes 5 minutes. It is especially egregious when a club has to match a bid.

I think the decrease in list sizes has had larger effect on the number of players drafted than is appreciated, it has taken away 2 unutilised players per club per year

Is it confirmed somewhere that Mullin has been upgraded to the senior list? I just haven't seen anything official, but I also haven't been paying too much attention either..

Only talking 2 picks to thy draft when 3 is the minimum is pretty much confirmation as Mullin's elevation will count as the third pick

Is this the lowest-rated Draft on this forum ever? If it weren't for charges against TB being dropped (rightfully so), it would be crickets here.

I hope Wellsy/Mac bring some drama to the ND/RD. You know, set the cat amongst the birds (Hawks, Magpies, Swans, Eagles, Crows etc.)

Nobody cares because the draft is completely compromised and has zero integrity. Just like the fixture, the MRP, the Brownlow, TV rights, and the umpiring.

I'm loving this draft class for the intrigue of who we take. All the compromised players are out of our range though I really like Murray and Addinsal. Wouldn't be against bidding on them.

Everytime I think who we could get with our two picks I'm excited by the prospects that will be available at that point.

Hunter Holmes (great article in the Herald Sun
https://archive.is/amc7Q), Pou Jnr, Onley, Murray bid, Mellor, NHH... There's so many flawed but fun upside players.
