2025 AFL Draft and Trade Dates:

Fri Oct 3 - Fri Oct 10: 2025 Free Agency Period
Mon Oct 6 - Wed Oct 15: 2025 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period
Wed Nov 19 - Thu Nov 20: 2025 Telstra AFL Draft

I'm loving this draft class for the intrigue of who we take. All the compromised players are out of our range though I really like Murray and Addinsal. Wouldn't be against bidding on them.

Everytime I think who we could get with our two picks I'm excited by the prospects that will be available at that point.

Hunter Holmes (great article in the Herald Sun
https://archive.is/amc7Q), Pou Jnr, Onley, Murray bid, Mellor, NHH... There's so many flawed but fun upside players.
It might be unpopular, but I'd take Hunter at 40 and run the risk of losing Mellor and try to get him as a Cat B.

I like Jesse, and I think we can develop him into a player, but he's not a must have. If he wasn't in our academy, he'd just be another mid draft Falcon that we wouldn't mind having. You see them every year.

Hunter isn't perfect either, far from it in fact. The kids ceiling is huge though, and we don't get any priority access to him if he does slip through to the rookie draft.

It's a big risk with where we're going to pick, and the rookie draft is where clubs generally ignore flaws and just pick on raw upside. We can just pre-list Mellor in the same situation, we can't do that with Hunter.

Of course, we wouldn't be in this situation if we had just delisted Wiltshire instead...but whatever. I assume the club has a plan. They always do.

And then we are only really taking 1 pick to the draft as if Mellor isn't taken at 40 we will have to take him otherwise we miss out

We'll essentially have 2 "live" picks across the ND & rookie drafts

1 in the ND if at pick up Mellor, and 1 in the rookie draft

If we cross fingers for Mellor as a rookie pick up, it'll be 2 in the ND

Fox Footy has us taking Harley Barker - wingman coming of an ACL.
I'd take that.

The ACL is a risk, and we don't get the immediate sugar hit everyone wants with a first round pick, but Barker and Dempsey on the wings for 10 years could be pure cinema.

Especially if one (or both) can eventually build their inside games and rotate with Holmes and Baz inside and out.

If we could land Butters too, we're set in there for a long time.

Was his ACL tear due to an impact collision or something more innocuous? I'd be a bit nervous taking him on if it was the latter.

There's no footage of it, but I'd suspect an awkward landing. PCL's are typically the collision injuries in the knee.

Nevertheless though, it's a risk, but Menzel and Johnson cases are very rare. It's far more likely he's in the Smith and Ashcroft mould in terms of his recovery.

best case scenario:

19: Ludowke / Lindsay / Barker
40: Onley / kondogiannis

Rookie hunter Holmes and cat b Mellor

Wouldn’t mind Addinsall either at 19 but he looks a bit vanilla

Mine -

19: X.Lindsay or O.Taylor or J.Murray or B.Addinsall
40: F.Rodriguez or H.Holmes

I just went and had a look at a couple of vids.
And then tried to find where this player might go. I have no idea.

But Josh Lindsay reminds me of a defensive version of Mannagh with a bit of Bews thrown in.

Much prefer someone taller but he's clean and aggressive.

But will add that on the small sample size he doesnt create enough space out wide for his left foot.
Something that was a problem for Murdoch, and not for I. Smith.

Tidy player and in some ways you'd think one Chris Scott would really like - seems to cover a huge amount of ground and consistently makes good decisions. But equally - not a lot of damage. Is he fast enough to play on a wing in the AFL?

He seems neat. But not overly flashy. Doesn't really scream x-factor.

So it has to be in the same round?? I thought it was just two picks only to match
No you're correct. It is only two picks.

But let's use a current example.

Carlton are looking to trade out picks 9 and 11.
And yet they want Dean.

In the same scenario next year, if West Coast were to select Dean at pick 2.
Carlton would need both pick 9 and 11 to match or they lose him.

It's a huge change.

Massive change to the value of late firsts too

It's a big change, but so it should be. The current system is terrible.

I agree. I just wonder if they've gone too far.

But it's definitely going to shift so many things.
Imagine that you want to match a pick. With live trading you are going to have to sell your soul on draft night to get the pick you need.

You'd really want to know what you're doing.

And I actually think clubs will move towards trades and minimal drafting.
If there wasn't the 'you must take 3 picks' rule.

I could see years where clubs dont draft at all. They'd just trade for a pick next year.

Yep good changes. Remains to be seen if they've gone far enough.

I think the clubs can still go into deficit can't they?

How far up the board could we get by offering 19 and F2 to potentially get Lindsay

It's not what we offer its the fact that no one above us except Carlton really wants to trade out (we could trade for gc or Brisbane picks but thats pointless as honestly Adelaide wont take Lindsay so if he gets past 14 he gets to us anyway-bulldogs and the clubs before like wce/haw/gws might be the ones that look to take him. We just have to hope he gets through to 19.
