I’m unsure if I missed it, however did Guthrie come out and retire?
Don't believe so

The AFL updated their team list changes article 2 days ago - following the drafts, and it still shows 'Cam Guthrie (delisted)'

I think it's embarrassing for Victorian football development. Bit of funding and impetus for new clubs to produce talent and all of a sudden the majority of top end talent are academy kids?

I'm happy for new and interstate clubs to have incentive to promote AFL in their area....but why aren't the Victoria development programs still dominating?

Annabelle and Uwland are good players, but possibly more a 10-18 standard in the past. I'm not anti-academies, I question the funding or programs locally. An argument could be made that academies and giving clubs incentive to develop talent in their area is good for football.

I know that's reverting to the past with zones.....but if the AFL don't do more to develop the talent pathways in Victoria, then the clubs with incentive might do a better job.
Took a while to reply here but good thought on it.

I see this as not being an apple to apple comparison.

The population of QLD + NSW combined is aprox 14 ish million in 2025.

Now you give four clubs exclusive access from a young age to go out and target the best and most promising athletes, throw them into academies and pump millions of dollars worth of resources into them each year with the sole focus of this elite small group in each clubs academy making it to AFL, it is very likely you are going to get some seriously talented players.

Nobody in Victoria has this privilege because the AFL takes care of it all. We have instead local grassroot clubs and then a bunch of district clubs which compete in a competition with each club having nowhere near the focus or funding of the academies, to develop players.

Imagine if collingwood could pour huge dollars and funding into an exclusive academy and pluck any of the best promising athletes from Vic they wanted and groom them for 6-7 years to become elite AFL stars + the benefit of also putting them into the local elite AFL funded grassroots pathways.

Do you think some extra stars might pop up into the draft all of a sudden??

10th place finish next year seems like an exceedingly pessimistic prediction. You can’t see us winning at least 12 games next year? May well happen but I’d be surprised if we don’t make the 8
For the 10 seasons I've posted on this board we get a surprisingly high ratio of 6th-12th predictions relative to top 4. In that time we've finished 6th-12th on 2 occasions; 8 times we've finished top 4 and 5 of those were top 2.

The smart bet is just to keep spamming top 4 predictions until we see a new pattern. A couple of consecutive years missing finals might do it for me.

Since 2022, GCS have had 9 picks ( 1/2 a starting 18) in the Top 18 picks overall.

We have had 2.

GCS made a semi final last year and got 4 picks inside 18 this year....

This is the AFL's version of equalisation lol...

GO Catters
The AFL's version of equalisation is that in QLD and NSW, AFL is viewed as highly as it is in VIC, SA, WA and TAS. That is, it's the predominant footy code. Until that happens, they'll keep pumping money into and drawing up policies to engineer succees in the northern states. When the sides start doing well, they latch onto that as an opportunity to do even more, as now there are more viewers' eyes fixed to the sport in the non-traditional state. Brisbane are winning flags and the Suns are coming, so there's no better time than now to ensure they can keep getting academy kids through the doors, continue to bolster their sides with high-value FAs and trade-ins and benefit from other privileges like OR. This is their chance to grow the AFL in QLD to unprecedented levels. Gotta strike while the iron is hot.

New guernsey numbers have leaked, scroll past if you don’t want to know yet 👀

When do we return to training?
I saw a post this arvo on X iirc, that focused on Tanner Bruhn's return to training.
They were training at what looked like Deakin Uni.

Edit: In fact, here is confirmation that the team has returned to training.

Very happy with our draft hand. All 3 players taken have that nice combination of pace and endurance. We certainly won’t be beaten by a lack of run going forward adding this group to what we have already.

Couple of very minor gripes. We will enter 2026 with the same ruck squad as this years’. Wasn’t through a lack of trying with Marshall our target but maybe we needed to have a back up option? The inevitable comparisons of Barker v Marshall’s careers from here on in as Duncan v Mumford will be a watch.

The other ? was the retention of Wiltshire. Personally would have loved to take Rodriguez with a late pick in the ND instead. Another compare the pair…

In the end we offered the Saints our first next year and the Hunter Holmes pick for Marshall. From the Saints perspective you could also say they could have used that Holmes pick to have picked the other Phillipou.

If the club didn't take months to communicate that sort of things to fans, it wouldn't be an issue at all.

Do they really take long or is it that as fans, it's easy to exaggerate these things?

The club formally announced the new numbers today - on Sunday was about bringing the draftees & their families to the club, and making the first announcement to them, their numbers, lockers etc

Yesterday it was unveiling that info to the other players and then us fans get it today - doesn't seem some crazy extended timeline

Thank god we didn’t. Severely overrated and will be backup at saints. Would rather keep developing Mitch edwards and give him games and get Conway right. Happy with our draft hand. Saints loss

I think Marshall is a great ruck and he'll do pretty well under the new rules, but TDK can't play with second ruck and rotating them off the bench will cook their rotations.

They'll figure it out eventually
