Just another sign of me getting older, I guess....

Today I made good on my promise at the weekend and went to see an optometrist (those who avidly read the Geelong board will know what I'm talking about here). The diagnosis is that although I have vision which isn't too far off 20-20, I have a stigmatism that will require me to wear glasses.

When many of us were younger-- or even much younger, when we were kids-- the image of one wearing glasses was that of "four eyes" and the like.

But after trying on a few pairs today, I liked the way they look on me. Very thin frames, the way they hug my face in that area, the way they go against my blonde hair... I was quite impressed, and I can't wait until I get these.

Jen even said that the pairs that I tried on make me look very intelligent-- which, for someone in my position, isn't a bad thing at all. :)

So what does the general public think nowadays? Do eyeglasses make a typical wearer look smart, academic or professional, or geeky like Harry Potter?

Curious to see what everyone has to say here, now that we're in the 21st Century and all...

I was meant to wear glasses from the time I was about 8 (stigmatism and short sighted), but I refused to do so as it was seriously dorky then (mid 70s) and something sporty people never wore. Funnily enough my eyes improved and I didn't really need them when I tested again (mid teens). Then in my mid 20s I decided they had deteriorated again and started wearing contacts and glasses full time.

In terms of looks, most people don't really notice glasses a great deal these days as many more people wear them.

I think, depending on the person, the glasses and the clothes, they can make someone look older, smarter, more professional, cooler, or dorkier. It all depends, however they can be a good fashion statement if you so choose. Reminds me - I need to get a new pair.

From one glasses wearer to another :D I really don't think it makes too much difference, however that being said I do think it does add that outward sign of intelligence. People do seem to think that you are a little smarter just because you do wear glasses.

Just mho.

:)

Look OK on some people, but they look stupid on me, (well, that's what I think, anyway) which is why I never wear them. Apparently I only need them when watching TV & driving anyway. (Don't worry Perth people, you won't catch me out driving too often! :p )

And even better on my face. :)

The more I think about it, the more and more I'm liking this...

OK, one other question, and this is purely an "ego" thing... I know the expression goes, Guys don't make passes at girls who wear glasses, but what about the other way around? Do girls make passes at guys who wear glasses? And what do they think about how they look on the opposite gender?

I think I'm SOL there-- I'm on a journo's salary, remember.

But I was impressed the way those frames looked. Very classy.

But of course, for me, it's function over form. Seeing out of them is the most important thing. :)

Yep, then go to the big money tree in your backyard and pluck another crisp $100 note from its branches.

As a wearer of glasses from a very young age, I believe they can make a difference to a face, but not make a person intelligent, etc. Just shorter, longer, wider, etc.

Agree with NW - Glasses are so common now that it doesn't really matter. I wore glasses since I was 7 (I'm 25 now) so I just got used to them. Mind you, I can actually see pretty damn well. I broke my last pair a few weeks back (just after the Syd v Bris game IIRC), I got a new pair the week after but I haven't worn glasses since then. My right eye is pretty much perfect, only one step under.. the left is worse, but in most situations, I can see perfectly well.

They can make you look any way you want, depending on how you do it ;)

It depends on the person. I wear glasses and everybody says they make me look intelligent. I don't know if that means that I look dumb without them.:(

Yep. Right glasses for the right face can look downright sexy! (Or maybe it's just the wearer - those bastards who could make rubbish bags look sexy;)) They don't look good on me tho - I think either my ears or my eyes are crooked.:(

My brother and I are the only two of six in my family that don't wear glasses. My Mum is lucky enough to be short sighted in one eye and long sighted in the other.

For awhile I was actually considering getting glasses with normal lenses in them just to make people take me seriously! I figured i might as well go 2 the optometrist just to check if my eyes were ok and I discovered that theywere slightly weak and I actually needed glasses for somethings.....It sounds kind of stupid but i think people do treat me slightly differently, not just like some blonde bimbo...

I also wear glasses and contact lenses as a result of being born with catteracts in both eyes. I hade 3 eye operations before I was 2 years old to remove the whole lens as well as another one when I was 14 to straighten the eyes up a bit for me to be able to wear contacts.

I am not really too fussed what other people think. The way I see it, I'm lucky to be able to see at all when you consider I was basically blind for the first 4 months of my life. Therefore, to be able to kick the footy with my brother, (who has the same condition btw) watch tv, cook, go to work, etc etc. I am doing pretty well, and I know my parents are very proud of both my brother and I.

I used to get called four-eyes and stuff like that when I was younger, but those people just never took the time to understand just what I'd been through. People still get put off today by the glasses... we sometimes cop that when we go out looking for chicks, but at the end of the day it's their loss.

There is a guy at my work who has a guide dog and he's one of the nicest people to talk to. He does really well, has close-circut tv screen to enlarge printouts, a larger monitor, a program which talks to him and a tape player and he does his job well. I wish I had the computer program which speaks all the words, (JAWS) it's really cool. :D

I started wearing glasses when I was only 2 years old, and did so for the rest of my childhood. I had perfect 20/20 vision when they were straight, but I couldn't control the muscles in one eye, causing it to cross. When I was about 7 years old I had major corrective surgery to fix it. If I hadn't fixed it, I may have gone completely blind in that eye.

Gradually my vision got better. When I was about 18 or 19, I just got sick of wearing them. I began to get a lot of headaches and started wearing them only intermittently. About the time I turned 20 I stopped wearing them completely, and I haven't worn any since.

So I wore glasses for more than 15 years, and I felt like my social life did suffer for it. So as you might expect, I don't particularly miss them.

I'm sure that when I get into my 40s and 50s I'll probably have to wear them again though. I think all the time I've spent on a computer in the last few years isn't helping that cause much.

Exactly.

My 11-year-old sister actually wants glasses, even though her eyes are perfectly fine. She thinks they are cool, and she thinks a lot of things are "geeky", so glasses are definitely not geeky. :)

I got glasses when i was 6 and was teased terribly for being a "nerd". I can remember actually trying to throw them away one time except my teacher stopped me. As i got older, people started to ignore that i had nerdy glasses, and spent more time laughing at me when i tried to not wear them and kept tripping over! The only time i had problems with them was when i did sports - i found them very annoying and they just got in the way.

By the time I got to uni last year though, they were the most annoying things i owned so it was a godsend to get contacts. It took me about a week to get used to them (ask Desr&w about me up in Brisbane last year - 5th day and 40 minutes for one lens!!) but now that I am, they are the best things i own, aside from my mock-trendy sunnies!! Only problem is that i can't drive with my glasses on as my depth perception with them on is shocking these days.

glasses can look quite good provided the suit the wearer.

Just don't get them with the thick 1 inch lenses that take up the size of your whole head ;)

same here...but a lot of people DO judge perhaps unconsciously by that (first) impression. and remember, this is the face you'll be showing everyone around you (it sounds strange when someone tells you: "gee, you look different without your glasses on").

i'm with catgirl on this one - at a 'mature age', glasses can add that feeling (or should that be illusion) of intelligence, while at a young age glasses are usually seen as nerdy.

small, rectangular glasses seem to be 'in', but hey, after a short while you won't be self-conscious of your glasses anymore.
